There are 5 rounds of films, and I'll have to double check but I think 7 rounds of actors. The order is inverted for the actors, so whoever gets the first film will get the last actor.

I think the middle is the best. We don't put all our chips on one savior pick and then wait for the garbage, and we don't lose out on the biggest options either.

Everyone is now making their final movie picks... just a reminder, your films lock permanently onto your roster the day that their preview screenings debut. So if a film opens on a Friday but has Thursday night screenings, it locks THURSDAY morning, using North American time zones. However, until your film opens, you may dump it and replace it with any unclaimed other film that has also not yet opened.

There will be ten rounds available for actors. I say available because you may choose to leave a few spots blank and forego your later picks, if you choose. Remember, the instant one of your actors opens in ANY film after May 1st, they are locked onto your roster even if that BIG movie later in the year that you drafted them for gets pushed to 2019. So leaving a few spots blank until later may be safer than trying to fill them all and accidentally having someone lock due to a nothing film you didn't think of.

And a reminder about box office. If a film opens and only one of us has drafted an actor from it, that actor earns a box office total equal to half of the film's box office. If two of us have actors from the film, they both get the equivalent of half of the film's box office. If three of us have actors from the film, they each earn a THIRD of the box office total. f is a quarter, 5 a fifth, etc etc. So just picking someone from Jurassic World or Solo won't guarantee you a ton of box office if others also grab a bunch of actors from the film. Last year on the other site, so many people took actresses from Wonder Woman that even Gal Gadot herself only paid her studio a return of about $30 million.

Also, once the draft switches to actors, the film side of the league is officially post-draft and people can begin dropping and adding films whenever they choose. No need to wait for the actors draft to finish first. I will open a separate thread to keep track of adds and drops. I will also be making an official spreadsheet to keep track of box office returns etc. at a later date.

"Only" 30 million.

Also, not to sound like an idiot but why target anyone in Wonder Woman apart from Chris Pine and Gal Gadot in the first place? Not like Remus Lupin is up to much these days.

Timmer - I think we will need a post which is solely about what movies have opened, who has actors from those film, and what has locked as a result.

Also - no need to leave actor spots open - just draft Dharmahelper in to a slot, I guarantee he has nothing opening this year.

This is one of the more interesting aspects - drafting someone early because you're like 'who else would pick actors from that film' and suddenly everyone wants to draft someone just to get a piece of the pie from that one box office.

Seems a touch counterproductive to me, drilling in on actors from the same film just to drive down the box office score. Would be more effective, says I, to target actors from different films to stay healthily in the running.

Kinda like punching someone in the knee and then punching yourself in the knee vs. just running the race.

Dunno. I've got my own plan for Actors/Actresses so we'll see if I'm missing the boat here or not.

To hurt your opponents. Last year, if I drafted Gal Gadot and Golden drafted Chris Pine, you would know that each of us was in line for at LEAST $150 million each from our actors (half of the expected box office of $300 million for the sake of argument). So you would have a choice: let us each have $150 million, or grab anyone from the film, Robin Wright, whoever, and now you've not only gained a piece of Wonder Woman for yourself (with 3 actors and $300 million total, you have $100 million coming your way) but you've dropped both me and Golden from $150 down to $100 each.

but then Rico sees this happening and thinks "hey, whoa" and grabs someone ELSE from the film. Now Rico has earned $75 million (300/4 actors) and cost each of me, Golden and you a furthur $25 million as we all drop from $100 to $75.

See? You gain box office AND hurt your competition.

That's the spreadsheet that I'll be working with. I've got some work to do on it, but the framework is ready, at least.

DH, keep in mind that the box office strategy was much more important in my other league. They had something like 14 players, and the bottom 3 got dropped at the end of the box office round, so 14 players x 10 actors meant all of the awards contenders went fast and you had a lot of room for box office maneuvering, and the jostling to not be in the bottom three was fierce. It's entirely possible that our smaller league, with only 1 team getting dropped from the box office round, may not use the tactic as much.

Golden out here with the gutshot bracket busting 5th round pick. I considered Poppins for a bit, but settled against it given the release date and the other picks that were available at the time. Original plan was to take it 3rd round or so.

I'm still not 100% sure if the box office is only US domestic, or worldwide post US release.

Mary Poppins Returns will score one week of Christmasy box office, probably credible enough, and will be a sure nominee at the Globes, unless it's a complete stink.

I would have not picked it, however, even at the cost of the entire competition, due to how despicable I find the notion of it even existing. There's milking every past classic in the history of cinema and there's making a sequel out of Mary Poppins. Fuck you, Hollywood.

It just means I'm far less qualified to understand box office patterns since US domestic is something I never observe nor care about, but I'm just spending my time imagining that for the most part movies will scale relatively similarly.

you'll be mistaken. I've been studying IMDB for the last couple of weeks; movies that do well worldwide don't necessarily do well in the US surprisingly.
