You enter the building. A soft bell tinkles above with the opening of the door.
It smells like warm dough, an aroma that should flood you with a sense of calm relaxation.
Who doesn’t love bread? Well, people with gluten allergies for one. But you tolerate gluten just fine.
What sets you ill at ease is the stillness. It’s as if you are alone in the bakery, and yet...
Somebody is monitoring you. You know it. The hair stands up on the back of your neck.
You cautiously tiptoe your way toward the counter. A heap of day-old baguettes is resting there.
Just then you spot him: a masked man, lurking just around the corner. He is menacing, brooding.
He spots you as you spot him.
Instinctively, you reach for the only weapon you can find: one of those day-old baguettes.
He lunges at you in a flurry. Panicked, you swing the baguette with all your might.
It’s a perfect blow, striking him just below the belt. It’s enough. He staggers, doubled over.
You have only a moment to flee, knocking the stack of baguettes off the counter behind you.
Strewn about the floor in violence. You didn’t even have time to ask:
Why was that man waiting for you there? All that matters is that you had fended him off.
One vicious swing of a baguette to the nutsack is all it took.
You blindly flee your attacker, down the road, around the corner.
You do not see it coming when you step out on to the street, right in the path of a delivery truck.
It was carrying fresh baguettes, ironically, when you lunged out in front of it.
Instinctively, you throw your arms up, and close your eyes. Everything goes black, your head spins…
