What do you like about the music that you like?

Let's try this on for size...

What are the overall qualities or characteristics of the music that you like?

Looking for general adjectives like heavy, danceable, complex, sparse, jammy, etc. Or phrases like guitar-lead, many catchy hooks, made in the 70s, jazzy drumming, etc. (Basically trying to avoid the 'I like the music I like because I like it' responses)

Please list at least three, but feel free to list 5, 10, 20 + if your tastes are that pinpointed.

I'll post my list later when I have more time.

This is very interesting. I love discovering and listening to a wide variety of music, so it's hard to summarize. I suppose I'm attracted overall to the following characteristics/adjectives:

beautiful
complex
dense
atmospheric
innovative

I don't even know what I'm attracted to. My tastes are so varied it's hard to say.

I see what you did there. ;)

But really that's not what I'm looking for at all. Why do you consider that the music you find enjoyable is enjoyable?

This is a very interesting concept. And difficult.

I like a wide variety of music, but when I try to distill it down what I come up with ends up being "the best." I tend to like "the best." of many different types of music. Be they progressive, classic rock, modern, classical, jazz, country and on and on and on.

Again, trying to filter out what makes The Beatles better than say Strawberry Alarm Clock or any of the bubble gum pop out during their early career? What makes Johnny Cash better than Toby Keith? What made Mozart better than Salieri? And on and on and on.

Also so much of what I like is dependent on my mood. My happy music today is not what my happy music last week was - or my happy music next week. And some of it is very sad and very British and very better than everyone else. ;)

If I had to filter it out to things I tend to like in music - I guess I would describe it in the following adjectives (even if some adjectives are contradictory)

Innovative
Lyrical (I likes me some pretty werdz)
Melodic
Interesting
Unexpected
Comforting
Exciting
Bass accentuated.
Percussive
Tricky
Harmonic

Was this the sort of thing you were looking for?

i like the plucking of lutes, the sounds of tree flutes, of bells and mandolins, the struming of anciant trubadour tails, ballads of love and war, the bards tails of long lost travels and adventures.

I like music that doesn't sound like anything I've heard before. Naturally, this has gotten progressively harder to find over the years. For a long time I pretty much eschewed melody and harmony altogether and listened to little other than sound collage and experimental stuff. Now I enjoy simpler music as well. Anything unique always interests me though.

Emotion-driven
Lyrical Content
Vocal Tones
Melodic Compositions
Builds and Climaxes
Hooks
Harmonies
Drum Grooves
Complex Chord Progressions
Audio Quality?

ETA: I like the purity in classical, the over-the-top happiness in Broadway, the grooviness in funk, and the introspective sounds of neoclassical.
