So we draft movies first, then actors, correct? And the first round of scoring is box office based, then the "playoffs" are awards season?

Yup Between May 1st and Dec 31st it's all box office-based, and as of Jan 1st, strictly awards based.

It will be five rounds of movies to start with.

Unless someone jumps in in the next few days, I'll assign a draft order and we can start a slow draft April 1st, so get ready!

Me too! In the league I'm in on the other site, they just did the draft order and I'm picking.... 14th out of 16.

It's brutal. With our group of 10, I think you could be 9th or 10th and make 2 picks that equal the big money films.... but 14th out of 16? Fuck me, I'll struggle to find films that can even gross $100 million with that.

yeah when we did a season of fantasy soccer and game prediction scores, for example, 2 people were allowed the same predictions (not entire week predictions, but some overlap was ok).

this changes things for me ;p

There are 5 rounds of films, and I'll have to double check but I think 7 rounds of actors. The order is inverted for the actors, so whoever gets the first film will get the last actor.

--as we have never played this game, and after reading the rules, would you say it makes the most sense if the actors we draft aren't involved in the movies we've drafted for a higher percentage of points we can earn (beyond award season), right? and if we draft an actor, it would be useful if we draft an actor involved in more than 1 movie, as we have a higher percentage of lucking out in award season maybe.

Let's say I pick Fantastic Beasts and Eddie Redmayne wins an oscar for his performance. I drafted Fantastic Beasts but not Eddie. do I get actor points?

So that first question I will be using the-numbers.com as they get the official daily reports for box office.

To that second point, while a lot of the eventual awards -y film won't be known yet, many can be guessed. If a studio has strong faith in their film for awards they will set it an awards friendly date. Watch for films set to open in September or October for instance, which is where many start their run.

If you see a film with a frequent Oscar nominee opening there it may be srs bsns. Also many strong Oscar hopefuls actually will be listed as opening in early January 2019... they will get a tiny qualifying run in ny/la to build buzz, generally over Christmas, and then open wide January 3rd. Watch for big sounding films with big names opening the re.

Now a film like that will earn you no box office but strong awards potential.

Actors and box office.... yes if an actor is going to be in 3 films that may be better then 1 it spreads out your chances but.. you better be sure about those film because as soon as the actors first film opens they are locked on your roster for good lol

I'm guessing you're using the elimination model from the copy/paste of the rules? Box Office winner skips to round 3, and at awards time, the bottom (I assume last place since we've only got 10) is eliminated each round?

I waffled between Bohemian Rhapsody and my other second pick for a bit, for that same reason. Fingers crossed nobody snipes me out and I can get both my picks, and you can get both yours.

@DH, I'm going to dumb down those rules about moving onto future rounds, I don't think we have enough players to give anyone a pass straight to round 3.

And if we have to drop lapluie out of the game, I will likely only drop the bottom 1 player out when we head to the golden globes round...
