Awful Overplayed Dadrock Mafia [sign-ups]

A burglary Mafia game for a minimum of 7 players (any number beyond that is gravy)

The setup is closed. It won't be vanilla-heavy. The time and date of the game are very much open to discussion.

Let's play this thing and get a game moving. We're The Syndicate! We play Mafia! :nicenod:

The cycles will likely be 20 minute days and 10 minute nights, with a 10 minute (or so) Day 0 to get everyone situated.

I like The Eagles and Hotel California is their best album. The song itself opens a semi-conceptual album about greed, sex, addiction, and the constant craving for more. "The Last Resort" that closes the album is the perfect conclusion to it.

I actually agree. I can't tolerate the title track anymore because of classic rock radio (that's not the song's fault), but there are good moments. I like "Try and Love Again" especially.

It's too bad Randy Meisner really didn't like singing in front of people. :(

Regarding the title track, I think the final line before the guitar solo is perfect given the concept of a hotel and the theme of addiction: "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave."

That's just good writing.

If you want some hate, however, here is a list of bands I almost always change the channel if they come on:

The Rolling Stones
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
The Doors
AC/DC
The Grateful Dead
Guns N Roses
Bon Jovi

These just off the top of my head.

I was going to make a joke about how I always assumed Hotel California was about cannibalism but then I checked and it turns out this is a real thing some people think it is about.

It's also about the church of Satan.

(Although, in a roundabout way, they are right, if you consider Anton LaVey's moral philosophy)

Probably next week, unless we have seven people and can roll either tonight or tomorrow night.

Thank you. They won't stop playing, even on my modern/all eras rock station. Every commute. Every time it's on. These two. :wall:

I'd swap Lynyrd Skynyrd for the Door, personally.

I can likely play this coming Sunday if you guys try for that day. Preferably early.

This weekend won't be possible. Sometime during the week next week or next weekend would be more ideal.

Question for the field:

If "Hotel California" had been written by Walter Becker and Donald Fagan, and had been created by Steely Dan, would your opinion of the song be different?

Why or why not?

It'd be a bizarre departure from their norm, which might make it more interesting. If the Steely Dan version was played as much on the radio as the Eagles version though it wouldn't matter. Burn it all.

Steely Dan wrote about addiction, excess, and the irony of having things go you way. How is that a departure from their norm?

I am referring to the sonic qualities of Steely Dan music rather than the lyrical content.

No. It was fine the first few times I heard it, but hearing it ad infinitum over the years has made me really detest mostly everything about how it sounds. Not big on that main riff or the chorus.

I voted "maybe" because I'm down but don't intend to keep checking this to know whether I'm available for the next date or not.

So just tag me when it's about to happen and I'll say if I can play.

This sunday I'll be busy after 5 PM EDT, otherwise it's cool.
