I have read the books, and am current with the TV show. There are some differences, but the TV show is stand alone good, IMO. The most annoying feature of the books is that I hate having to advance the story with a POV chapter from a character that does not interest me.
The casting is good, too; they picked people who look as I imagined the characters might. Especially Joffrey, lol.
What book are you up to, Epi? While trying to keep this thread spoiler free, I am thinking we should only discuss up to the current season on the TV show, since some are only watching the show. But I don't want to spoil those who are reading and are NOT up to the current season.

I read multiple books concurrently, so I constantly go back and forth. And I'm a slow reader.

Well directly on the right side you have the island of Skagos there. I know I wouldn't want to go near there.
On the left there are mountain clans that hate the wildlings.

So nerdy I even have this book:
I actually want to read them again, but I've been waiting to time it before the next book. And you could read the Dunk and Egg stories if you want something from the world of ASOIAF but shorter.
I know this is in the TV section, but I'm only reading the books.
That said, I'm half-way through the first one. I've put it on hold until the spring term is over though.

Hardhome was one of my favourite episodes since the one where Tyrion destroyed Stannis' fleet with Wildfire.
And I can't wait to see what benefit Stannis will reap from the Lord of Light after that last episode! Sure, we hate him, but what would you rather see - a golden glowing armored Stannis slicing through his enemies with a lightsaber... or a little girl in a book club with an old man?

I want to see Stannis die in a fire, tbh. With Melisandre as the kindling. I have thought they both were atrocious ever since what happened with Renly. Plus he's so stuffy.
Or maybe the WW can freeze them to death since they both love fire so much, Lol.
I kind of think Azor Ahai, if he actually exists, is possibly the Westerosi version of Satan. His followers are too interested in burning people alive and birthing evil shadow babies to for him to be otherwise.
Stannis may have thus been misled by that hideous witch, but he knew what he was doing to his own daughter was wrong; he sent Davos away, because he knew Davos would stop him. Actually, I hope DAVOS kills Mel, and maybe even Stan too, although that would be too merciful for him, imo.

I think part of what always endeared me to Stannis was that I really like Davos, and I thought he was a pretty good voice of reason there. I can't see Davos staying in his corner after that.
I hope Stannis and the Boltons just wipe each other out. Sansa is the only one to root for there. (And Theon if you love/hate him like I do. I hope he redeems himself by saving Sansa. ) SVS's WW suggestion wouldn't be a bad idea here either
Does anyone care about what is going on in Dorne? Jaime and Bronn there seems like a filler. A little comic relief.
I don't really care that much about the Kings Landing drama either.
I'm still most excited about the Dany situation. I love all of it. Although I don't want Jorah to die of greyscale. Hopefully they do whatever cured it on Shireen

Dorne was awful the entire season. Nothing of substance. I would have liked Arianne not being written out instead of I-Don't-Even-Remember-Her-Character-Name Indira Varma sticking around. And the Sand Snakes are bad at acting. That Obara girl was once a 9-year-old or so Oscar nominee (didn't see that movie, though) and now she's chewing her lines.
King's Landing actually holds much better, but mostly because Jonathan Pryce is killing it.

The Dorne plot (and I am a fan of both Northern & Southern Conspiracies if you start going to reddit & reading the tinfoil) is so disappointing. Dorne, and Quentyns arc were some of my favorite sections of the book. The way Doran revealed his plans to Arianne (she is a major character! WTF re leaving her out ), everything about it. What they did to Dorne is disappointing to say the least. And removing Jamie from his redemption for no real reason, so he can make a road movie with Bronn (On the Road to Dorne, lol, with the Sand Snakes instead of Dorothy Lamour) and just letting Brienne sit & stew instead is inexplicable to me.

I know of Arianne and other characters only from reading wiki synopsis. She sounded hot and important and I would have preferred to see her included in the show.

I'm still digesting what I just witnessed during the season finale. On the whole, I've found this season to be a massive disappointment. The show runners took their chance and tried to stand on their own artistic merits. The writing has been abysmal. The plot lines have been contrived and uninteresting. Every episode is filled with nudity and violence and pathetic attempts to pander to the audience. In a lot of ways it's like watching an adaptation of someones really bad fan fiction, which I guess it technically is at this point.

This is why I'm sticking to finishing the 5th book (Amazing so far, btw!), and listening to spoilers for the show. Hearing how awful this season has been is really pushing me away from wanting to see how it plays out.

I can understand the feeling, the season finale was really clunky as hell and superficial, as far as structure goes, as well as almost self-aware in toying with the notion of "cliffhangers" and shock value. It was literally tiresome for one storyline jump after another to basically follow the same pattern:
insert character(s) / one minute of tension or small talk / fight or killing sequence / cliffhanger / cut to next
I'd once again call the sequence in King's Landing the better one, although that was a very ballsy and tough to watch scene nonetheless.

Indeed, I always combat this by turning everything in the spoiler tag into a quote by inserting the standard quote tag right inside the spoiler tag.

i did not like Jon Snow dying, I imagined he was going to die eventually, cause I think everyone will
but I was still hoping it was going to be later on

Silly rant below. Double warning for members who haven't read the books all the way through (or haven't been spoiled, at least) to seriously not open the spoiler tab.
So even though it's pretty obvious by now how much the show is capable of twisting with people's minds and reactions during shocking twists and such, I was still overwhelmed by so much talk in Social Media happened and how silly it was at times. What really made me log out of Facebook and even turn my PC off for a week was seeing how every person who read the books, was spoiled regarding to book events, believes the R+L=J theory and/or the Melisandre will rezz Jon theory and so forth would act cocky in reply to every other person who would post "oh noo they killd Jon Snoo". I get the latter camp for being shocked, but how interesting do the former think they are by CONSTANTLY posting reply in the form "Jon Snow will (be) revive(d) next season / Melisandre will rezz him, mark my words, SNAPSHOT THIS REPLY I'M GOING ALL IN ON THIS GUESS NO SWEAT". Urgghhh.

Idk why I even kept watching through this season. They really fucked up a lot of the storylines. Like the only ones they got mostly right were Arya and Cersei (and kinda Dany I guess but I don't care as much about that >_>). Everything else was just so incredibly fucked up.

I don't watch the show or read the books at all, but I'm pretty sure Dany and Arya are the only stories that matter?
Certainly, it feels that way from the outside and maybe Tyrion.
A lot of people thought Jon was the savior or the Westerosi equivalent thereof. But the actor said he isn't coming back pretty unequivocally and he cut his hair, so

Ok wow I really don't see one bit of the spoiler text on my tablet.
Maybe rezzd Jon will be intentionally recast. Idk what to make of his statements, because it can easily be a ruse from the producers, as for the hairdo... I still have friends who legitimately claim Jon is essential to the whole GoT endgame, so to say, and that any less of a rezz/reincarnation would be BS - book, show, regardless.
