The Syndicate

A game for 15 players. A couple non-standard for the Syndicate rules, so read carefully:

Role and character claiming ARE allowed. A character's alignment in the video game(s) is not tied to their alignment in this game (i.e., Ezio can be mafia, Shay can be town, etc.), and alignments are randed after character assignment. There will be a hammer in effect this game--meaning that if a majority is reached before the deadline, the day ends early. If a majority is reached and I'm not around to end the day right away, screenshot the poll and send it to me. Discussion post-hammer is allowed until I end the day. The thread will not be open during the night. Only talk to other players about the game privately or during the night if I have explicitly allowed it. Days will be approximately 72 hours. There will be no replacements or subs, players that have to drop or flake out will be modkilled or otherwise dealt with at the GMs discretion.

There will only be two factions in this game, Righteous Warriors and Heathenous Spies. There are no conversion mechanics in this game. The GM will not lie but he may not always answer your question.

Fun fact: as of 2013, Francisco Randez, the model that Altair and Desmond's faces were based off of (as well as Ezio's), purports not to have played any of the Assassin's Creed games.

Bonus fun fact: the Assassins in the original game are based in part on a real life Order of the Assassins, also known as the Nizari Ismaili State, that was active in Persia and Syria during the 12th and 13th Centuries.

This will be the first time I've ever played a game with "Assassin's Creed" in the title as well.

Fun fact: the voice actor for Desmond let slip that he was working on a new assassin’s creed game before Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood was officially announced.

Bonus fun fact: Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is the first Assassin’s Creed game to let you recruit NPCs as Assassins and then call them into combat during the course GOG gameplay.

I never made it through Rogue due to my PS3 dying while I was in the middle of it, but what I played was a lot of fun. Black flag is a great game.

I’m maybe 1/4 or 1/3 through odyssey, tbh I can’t tell if it’s a good game or if it just hits all my sweet spots.

Belated fun fact: AC: Revelations features what can best be described as a “metal grabby hand” that makes climbing walls much easier. It also has zip lines for the first time in the series, which are inarguably cool!

What can folks who’ve never played a nanook game expect to encounter here?

Man, hard to answer that without giving stuff away about the setup! Uh, in general during game design I try to focus on roles and mechanics that are fun to play (without taking away from another players fun, if that makes sense), and have some semblance of balance—I don’t care about being perfectly balanced, but I want both sides to be able to reasonably win the game if they play well, cause playing a game you have a 2% chance of winning even if you play perfectly is not fun.

In a themed game I generally try to walk the line between people who are familiar with flavor being able to go “oh, that’s neat!” without putting people who aren’t familiar with flavor at a disadvantage.

I think that covers the basics? I guess the main things I focus on are making a fun game, and trying out stuff with mechanics that I think are interesting.

I have never played an AC game. In fact, when the very first game came out and there was a huge TV ad campaign promoting it, I thought it looked terrible.

But I'll play Mafia.

We're in a bit of a lull here as we await the GOC, so sign-ups can slow down. We ought to pick up soon.

If I’ve designed it properly you should be able to have just as much fun whether you’ve played the video games or not!

Fun fact: in AC IV: Black Flag, you play as a goddamn pirate. A pirate! With a pirate ship! And Blackbeard is in it! And Mary Read! And Anne Bonny! And a bunch of other very cool if you can ignore all the murdering pirates! Avast, ye hardies!

Fun fact: I didn’t actually play AC: Syndicate, but I’ve heard you got a cane sword thing, which seems pretty cool. IIRC it’s also the most modern setting for the Assassin storyline.
