Hey all, it's almost time for the 2023 Socky Awards! Before we officially start votes, I'd like to encourage you all to send in some of your favorite quotes on the site from 2023. Usually we try to keep submissions up throughout the year so funny moments don't get forgotten in time, but we missed setting that up this year so we may not get as many but I'd love to get a few! You may either privately message this account with your favorite quotes, or post them in this thread to nominate. Feel free to also campaign for other categories if you wish.

Once everything is ready, this post will be edited with all categories and eligible games/players and the voting period will open.

All members of the Syndicate Community are eligible to vote. Your membership is defined as having an account on this forum.
You may place up to 2 (TWO) votes in each Award Category except where otherwise noted.
You are not required to vote in every category.
All votes must be submitted to the Sockys2023 Account to be counted. (Clicking this link will take you there)
Voting will remain open until 11:59 PM Saturday, February 3rd, approximately 2 weeks from when this is announced. Award Reveals will happen approximately one week after that.
Discussion about votes places and nominations is encouraged!! Some performances, moments, and members might be forgotten over the course of the year, this is an opportunity to resurface them.
Voting for yourself for an individual award (or a game you hosted), is not permitted. If we discover that this happens, we will inform you of this, and that particular vote will not count until you replace it with a legal vote. However, you MAY vote for Team awards for teams you were part of.
You may change or remove votes if you like. If you do change your vote, your final vote in any particular category is the one that we will count.

Well, according to the Purge, cats can eat frogs at any point as a reminder for them to stay in their lane.
Tongue in cheek reference to the Purge in talking about how frogs should stay in their lane. I’m not sure they really believe this, and seems to hold a grudge against cats.

If you're gonna eat my flesh and sinew too, that's a different story. At least then you have the decency to make a full meal out of me. There is an authority to carnivorousness that I respect. Simply siphoning off some of my blood, and leaving behind Lyme disease or malaria or whatever else, is cowardly, dastardly, and incompatible with inter-species decency.

I dunno dude, I've had a lot of mosquito bites and I'm still alive n' feelin' fine...I'd much rather a mozzy bite than have a creature devour my flesh and sinew.

Raccoons. They used to hide in the dumpster and jump out when I had to take out the garbage. This happened multiple times to 12-year-old me
Dislikes raccoons. Also can live past 12 years. That limits the pool!
I’d think the Red Fox, who can technically live 10-14 years in captivity, but I’m gonna go with ALLIGATOR, who can usually live much longer, isn’t the fastest, and prey on raccoons by the water.

I got the best animal

My favorite animal is the Okapi, but they are elusive, so I understand if they couldn't get one
implies that they didn’t get the Okapi, and that they got a less elusive animal. Okapi are found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Stands to reason that the ‘best’ animal also probably can live around there.

Only humans, monkeys and other mosquitoes can get Yellow Fever.

Wild Monkeys arent in Europe. Could be a monkey that was raised in captivity in France and was released recently back into their native habitat.

Mayo is most likely the lesula, which, while raised in captivity, now lives in the Congo rainforests. I think the vaccination is a good sign, and thus I think Mayo is good.

Idk, I think their rudeness is comical in a way. I like to blast finger guns at them when they hiss at me as I jog by.
He isn’t put off by hissing gooses, and instead is prone to ‘jogging’ by them. So he is a fast, carefree animal.

Additionally, Sloonei is 30 years old according to his profile. That’s a long lifespan for any animal, so that whiddles it down.

Well that is a novel take. The implication from the flavor post seems to be that some animals do change in the full moonlight. And the picture in signups do seem to lead towards some screwed up abomination of animal.

Lifetime Achievement Award
Last but far from least. This award can be viewed as a sort of "Hall of Fame" induction, not to be confused with the Hall of Fame forum on this site where we keep statistical track of each game and player. This award does not refer only to 2023 game play. It refers to the entire body of work (referring specifically to their Mafia play and/or hosting) for a player's time on this website from the day they registered.

Not everyone is eligible to be inducted this year. This will function similarly to an athletic Hall of Fame, like those seen for professional sports. This year, only players who joined The Syndicate in the year 2019 or earlier are considered to be eligible for a Lifetime Achievement Award. Last year the cutoff was at 2018, and now we have advanced it one year. Next year the cutoff will be 2020. Again, to be eligible for the Lifetime Achievement Award, your nominee must have joined the site during or before the year 2019.

The following members have already won this award, and are thus ineligible (aka here is the group of extremely cool people the new inductees will be joining in recognition):

In my notes, I don’t want people to forget Dyslexicon’s mafia performance in GoC 2022, which was masterful.

For almost-wins, and just staring us right in the face, was the duo of Epignosis and Thunal22 almost getting away with a win in Fx after Epi flat out admitted Thunal was his partner in one of his first few posts of Emporer’s Soul.

As for quotes, I don’t have as many as I would like- there are so many funny people and moments from this past year. But I wrote down three:

It’s not conceited or pompous to say ‘hey, I think I played a pretty slick game here’ or ‘I think I utilized my role pretty well/had a fun gambit’ because those are becoming hard for me to pinpoint

That was pretty strong for sure. Helps for sure that SVS and I had most of the solve on that one on D2, but we were both dead

I’d also put out that my personal mafia rands the last few games also felt pretty clean: Guitar mafia (me/svs) was a sweep and only had 1 vote against us all game, and wolfwalkers (me/robyn/abbi>porscha) also swept rather cleanly too.

Best civilian is a rough category because it’s so merited on team play that it’s hard to hone in on one player. I’d also say there are some games where I would say the best civilian is sometimes one that sets up the POE and gets killed early. Good early game town play IMO should not be overlooked. I don’t have a lot of great examples of this, and I don’t think I’m in the running at all for that either lol

Best Role Use / Gambit is probably the toughest vote every year. I'll promote one that immediately comes to mind:

In Severance, RondoDimBuckle was mafia and on the chopping block late in his side (the Evening thread). He claimed to have had an extra vote placed on him (a lie), as many players genuinely had prior. In the moment it struck me, the host, as pointless and unnecessarily risky. But it helped him to assert a stronger posture in the game, and even when he later recanted the claim, he still managed to convince a roster that very much wanted to vote him out that they shouldn't do so. It was a hell of a personal comeback.

In case others are still on the fence or just don’t have a clue on some of these, I want to share a few more so they don’t get lost in the shuffle:

Alison had an amazing run as mafia in Apathy Mafia- she snowed pretty much everyone and almost cleared herself in Fx.
SVS, who was mostly alone for most of her mafia game until a few people added to her BTSC, had a masterful run using the mech to her advantage and keeping a low profile to win as mafia in Se7en.

Srceenplay had a fantastic turn as indie in Warbreaker.
Also Nook can’t be overlooked as the 3p of the neighborhood watch, getting me and others to trust him in dead chat to secure his win.

Some great individual town performances by a couple players (like DrWilgy) in cool bugs mafia and (Nutella) in emperor’s soul mafia if you want to check those out.
JJJ also set up some fantastic POEs early in Ted lasso that were largely correct and impressive, even though town didn’t win that game

I also made a gambit in Ted lasso to pretend to get cursed, which seemed to work as I didn’t get killed for it.

I’ll keep thinking of stuff, since I haven’t voted yet.
