The Syndicate

I figured this section is probably the best place for this sort of thing...

Years ago I ran something like this at work and people seemed to have fun with it. I know we have a diverse membership base here, so I'm curious if there will be enough interest.

Fantasy Sports can be fun but it can also be really time-consuming. With G-Man's EZ Fantasy Football, you can still live vicariously through the successes of sports teams but without all the extra work each week on your end. Here's how it works:

1) You sign up in the poll.
2) Once the entry deadline closes, I will randomize all participants and we will have a draft. Everybody gets to pick two teams for offense and one team for defense. No two teams are allowed to be exactly the same.
3) Once the draft is complete, I will randomize all participants into divisions and conferences, as necessary.
4) Once divisions and conferences are generated, I will create a schedule of head-to-head match-ups between participants.
5) Each week of the NFL season, participants team sets play against each other in said head-to-head match-ups. Here's how the scoring works:

WEEK 1, Game A: G-Man v. Player X
-The teams I and Player X selected for offense earn us points based on how many points those teams score in their weekly games.
-The teams I and Player X selected for defense cost us points based on how many points those teams give up in their weekly games.

Offense #1 points for + Offense #2 points for - Defense points against = Total Weekly Score

Player X wins if their Total Weekly Score is higher than mine or vice versa.

6) I keep track of all the scoring each week so you don't have to. I have a lovely spreadsheet just waiting to be dusted off and used again.
7) As the NFL season progresses, I will update our season standings in the thread to show how Syndicate participants are doing in their divisions and conferences.
8) Week 14-16 of the NFL season will be our playoffs and the playoff structure will be modeled after the NFL's (depending on how many people sign up for this).
9) Week 17 of the NFL season will be the Syndicate Bowl, where the top two teams face each other and the winner is the league champion.

It isn't. What he is proposing is super simple compared to normal fantasy football.

Epi's right. Basically, you pick three teams in the draft and I do all the work from there. All you have to do is check each week and when you win and when you lose.

I think I could manage this, although it still sounds like a draft is involved and that could be difficult.

Sweet! Thanks for joining folks. If we can get at least three more people to sign up for the inaugural season, we can start the draft process. Since this is a strictly Points For and Points Against scoring system, I'll try to help you out by posting some PF & PA stats from the last few seasons.

If we have 10 participants or fewer, all of our draft picks (offense and defense) come from one list (10 players = 30 teams and there are 32 NFL teams to pick from). If we get 11-16 participants, then our offenses will be selected from one list and the defenses will be drafted off of a second list of NFL teams. If we have more than 16 participants (doubtful for this first run but you never know), then we'll use three team lists to draft from (2 lists for offense and 1 for defense).

See if you guys can recruit a few more people to take part. The sooner we hit 8 or 10 players, the sooner we can start drafting. The draft will be a rolling process across several days instead of traditional fantasy football where the draft happens all at once at a specified time. This way you can all think about your choices a little and just post your selection in the thread. I'll try to update the draft board regularly once we get to that point.

This was fun at work and I think it will be fun here too.

I'm going to leave sign-ups open until Noon EST on Thursday (9/3/15). That way we'll have a week before the first game to draft teams.

If we stay at fewer than 11 players, there will just be two conferences and no divisions. If we get 12 or more, we'll have both conferences and divisions. We'll see how it shakes out. Sign-ups will close tomorrow (Thursday) at noon EST. Then I will randomize a draft order. Once we draft our players, I'll randomize the conferences and create the schedule.

Sign-ups are now closed. I'll PM you guys a notice shortly as well. I'll be posting on my little blog/site/thing during the season so I can upload pics of the standings out of my spreadsheet. I'll probably post most of the content here in the thread two but the blog/site/thing is sort of a trial run for possibly doing this sort of thing with some other friends of mine next year who don't all congregate in one forum.

So now it's time for the draft. There are 32 NFL teams and eight of us. We each pick three teams (two offense, one defense) and we're locked into them for the whole year. That means 24 teams will be picked, leaving eight on the sidelines. I'm curious to see which teams we leave on the outside looking in.

Alrighty. It's noon and MM hasn't popped out of his hole to either look for his shadow or pick a team, so the draft order has been altered. He's now at the end of the first round. I'll send out a revised draft order shortly.

Now I gotta think about my choice some more. Do I try to snatch two good offenses early and hope a decent defense is left at the end or do I pick a good offense and a good defense early and hope that my second offense can hold its own?

I don't follow football at all, so I just spent a couple of minutes looking at current defense/offense rankings, and told myself I'd pick either a Texas-based team or the Bengals (because Cincinnati ) for my first team. As I grew up in Cinci, for years the Bengals were TERRIBLE, and it seems they've at least gotten better, but I noticed Houston was better at defense than Cinci was at offense or defense, so that was my thought process.

How accurate are offense/defense rankings at this stage typically in predicting how well teams do throughout the season in either regard?

Sports statistics are tough to use as predictive data. It helps more to know which teams had the most turnover or injuries in the offseason. Past results do not indicate future results but good teams tend to stay good (whether on offense or defense) for a few years at a time. There's always the great equalizer called injury though.

I pick New England for offense. I hate Tom Brady and the Patriots but for this, I'll mooch off their offensive prowess.
