My senior paper in linguistics was entitled "The Boomhauer Effect," which basically made that case that the purpose of language is effective communication, and that rules can be broken in informal, familiar settings (as they often are), but in formal, unfamiliar settings, one should adhere to usage that will maximize your ability to be understood by the most number of people (Linguistic Utilitarianism, heh), unless you are purposely trying to be cryptic (Like in Mafia, ha).

I got an A. :noble:

Well, that's blatantly wrong. Dictionary makers have gotten sloppy.
Sorry to spoil your fun, llama, but Merriam-Webster also agrees with Golden. So it goes.

Because English dictionaries are descriptive. Look up the word "literally."

Spoiler: show
literally
adverb lit·er·al·ly \ˈli-tə-rə-lē, ˈli-trə-lē, ˈli-tər-lē\
Definition of literally
Popularity: Top 1% of lookups

1
: in a literal sense or manner : actually <took the remark literally> <was literally insane>

2
: in effect : virtually <will literally turn the world upside down to combat cruelty or injustice — Norman Cousins>
Second definition. The word "literally" does not mean that at all, and yet so many people misuse the word as an intensifier that your beloved Merriam-Webster gives credence to the definition!

I will probably be voting for Boomslang for literally drowning the English language in shit. :disappoint:

Oooh...bonus points. "Literally" is an adverb. :feb:

That's because virtually all English dictionaries are descriptive rather than prescriptive, defining words as they are commonly used rather than how they are "properly" used.
