Re: Rate the last movie you've seen
Good to hear. I enjoyed the book immensely (though Dune Messiah is all a blur to me and I haven't bothered with the rest). I also thought the new first film was fantastic (slow, but great). I'm glad to hear the second movie suited you. Looking forward to it.

Re: Rate the last movie you've seen
Thanks for this. I trust your judgment and this likely saved me some time.fingersplints wrote: ↑Tue Oct 11, 2022 4:39 pm Jurassic World Dominion
I watched this over the weekend. Wow how far from the original Jurassic Park has this franchise come. There was some cool looking scenes, but a lot of it felt more like a fan fic than actual movie. Just giving the fans moments they think they want to see/hear. Nothing special. None of the suspense of the original.
My cheapo self actually rented this and I’m full of regret
1 out of 5. Maybe 1.5. Seriously underwhelmed

Re: Rate the last movie you've seen
When I finally got around to seeing this film for the first time maybe six or seven years ago, I felt exactly the same way as you. I wanted to like it, but meh.G-Man wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 9:18 am The Big Lebowski
I finally got around to watching this thanks to streaming libraries. In my opinion, it does not live up to the 20+ years of hype. It’s pretty funny in an absurd sense, but I felt the ending was a bit of a shoulder shrug and fell flat. Perhaps that is perfectly in line with the character of The Dude, but it let the air out of the rest of the build-up for me.
3.5 out of 5
Then again, well, you know, that’s just like- uh- my opinion, man.
I do not know if you have seen it, but in my opinion, the best Coen Brothers movie is their 2004 remake of The Ladykillers starring Tom Hanks and Irma P. Hall. I saw it in theaters, and the first time it only amused me- nothing more- except that it begged to be rewatched. I got it one evening from the video store (ah, fun times) because they were always running insane deals (rent 3, get 2 free, that sort of thing) and I couldn't find a fifth film I wanted. So I saw The Ladykillers and decided to have another go.
I know it got panned, but I snobbishly believe it's because so much went over people's heads after only one viewing. That film is one you might be able to watch twenty times and still not catch all of the hysterical details.
I even bought the soundtrack. Hip hop + Old Gospel quartets + hip hop versions of old Gospel quartets.

Actually, I changed my mind. Get mildly spoiled below only if you've seen it or do not care about seeing it (which is the better mindset of the two, fwiw).

I have some thoughts. I'll get to them after I get SF2 Mafia rolling.Ricochet wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2017 5:46 pm Was gonna rant about the Netflix Death Note, but then I suddenly found no energy whatsoever to pursue this in serious fashion. D for dumb. Not a travesty, still dumb.

Housebound
A New Zealand film that is both a serious horror film and a comedy. Odd combination, but I was entertained throughout. 7/10.

Re: Rate the last movie you've seen
I am teaching cinema studies this year, and I could not have asked for a more thoughtful class, big as it is. 30 kids- but Jesus, they are so fun. I could not even get through the Syllabus yesterday before they went to arguing about what the title of "The Butterfly Effect" meant.
I made sure they understood by the end of the class.
So stoked.

Re: Rate the last movie you've seen
I watched Django Unchained last night and I liked it a good bit, despite the (probably deliberate) goofiness of the gunfights and the ending.
That scene about the masks...I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.
