What time period did the book cover?Mongoose wrote:I just finished Multiple Choice by Alejandro Zambra, which is a novel told completely within the confines of Chilean SAT questions. It really depressed me (content not format).
I am interested in reading Latin American literature, particularly magical realism.

Last week, Epi recommended the short story Cathedral by Raymond Carver on the Syndicate Chatzy. I finally read it today, it's a nice story indeed.

I am doing the same, except I've not started reading them yet or even have the books in my possession. Some day, though. Maybe.Epignosis wrote:I refuse to watch the show until I've finished the books. So I'll watch in about 2024.Illyria wrote:Do you watch the show? I read the first book, then GoT started, which made the second book muuuch easier as I had faces to put with names.Epignosis wrote:I'm starting A Song of Ice and Fire today. I've thumbed through the Appendix and looked at all the names. How in the world does he keep up with all these people?
Guess I'll manage it a chapter a day.
I keep annoying my friends not knowing what the hell they are talking about so I just pretend it's LotR.

Re: What do you be readin'?
My internet was down for 5 days, and in those days I read Ursula K Le Guin's The Dispossessed, and got about 40% through Naomi Klein's The Shock Doctrine. The Dispossessed was pretty interesting from a political point of view, Le Guin leans very much toward Kropotkin-esque mutual aid based anarchism, and a fictional book that explores a society that is explicitly based on those ideas was pretty thought provoking. It was one of those books that you will lay in bed thinking about if you read it at night. As with other scifi favorites of mine, like Frank Herbert's Dune, Le Guin's way of creating and exploring culture and politics is the most engrossing aspect, I'd recommend it to anyone with a passing interest.
The Shock Doctrine is honestly depressing as hell to read. Naomi Klein must be a hell of a writer though, to make me read hundreds of pages about neoliberal reforms.

Yeah I hear a lot of people really dislike it, but some people love it. I was interested in tackling it eventually but he has plenty of other books that I want to check out before that.

I don't have much interest in running but given his writing style I could possibly enjoy it.Metalmarsh89 wrote:I read another auto-biography he wrote on his running. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is supposed to be good, and I'm planning on reading that one sometime.
I plan on reading The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle next, supposedly it is his best.
Currently, I'm reading The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell.

Re: What do you be readin'?
I'll definitely be reading it sometime soon, but not too soon. I have a habit of starting books and then not finishing them until months later. I'm currently rereading The Silmarillion and Dune in addition to Lolita and The Cuckoo's Calling. I also technically never finished Dracula but I lost my place and can't really be bothered to try and find it after such a long time.Mongoose wrote:Dude, seriously, dude. You have got to read The Casual Vacancy. It's so good. It reads a bit more like Jonathan Franzen's tragicomedies than Harry Potter.
So good.

It is. I haven't touched anything she's written since the last HP, so I wasn't sure what her other stuff is like.Mongoose wrote:Is that the book under JK Rowling's pseudonym?A Person wrote:I'm reading The Cuckoo's Calling because it was recommended to me and because not having any way to listen to music or watch videos forces me to rely on books for entertainment at the moment. So far it's pretty much what I expected, which is a good thing I think. I had an ebook version of Lolita on my other computer that I was halfway through before my computer's untimely demise, so I'll probably try to start reading that again.
