What is your mafia experience? What sort of things will you be looking for on Day 1?
My experience is a bunch of games, most on AoPS, some on MU, and I'm looking for AI posts like a normal person.
What the fresh hell does this mean? Vague on vague on vague. I am not entertained.

Nani the fuck you picked the single least vague post I've made in this entire thread to call vague. Fake read sir.
LOL "I vote based on alignment indicative things" tells me absolutely nothing about what you are looking for. It entirely avoids the question.

Pros: Bunch o' stuff.
Cons: Can't brown nose for shit. Can't PR read for shit.
Gameplan: Make bad reads until I can make good reads.
Misc.: *deep inhale*

The shortest cycle length ever to be run on my home site was one 3/1 game, and most cycle lengths are things like 10/2 and 14/2, so TS cycles are definitely pretty fast for me. I've played a few 2/1 games on MU, so I can still keep up with reading for sure, and I can still make reads for sure, but don't expect me to highpost unless I really want to. For the same reason, I'm not so experienced with the live interaction side of this time format, which is something I'm hoping to learn more about.

My home site doesn't have pages, just long scrolls of posts, which actually makes wallposts easier to read than quintaposts n stuff. Wallposting is a habit I've been told to break on a couple of sites with actual pages. Will work on that.

Esooa is the only player here that I've played with before (I mean, who hasn't played with Esooa before at this point?), but I'm sorta familiar with spf's playstyle because I read G6. I'm also familiar with the playstyles of some other players here for reasons I can't talk about.
I feel icky about this. I have never liked when folks explain away n00bish behavior or cultural differences when it hasn't been a problem yet.

he might just be town too

i think most of the issue i take with dom stems from a difference in mindset and playstyle moreso than it does alignment

i find his style of questioning confusing/incredibly unclear - but not necessarily wolfy. i think i'm pretty decent at telling when pushes on me are happening in bad faith or good faith, and i don't get the sense that dom's line of questioning is stemming from bad faith - i can practically hear him cackling behind his keyboard as he types the "gotchas", and i can believe that he believes what he's saying even if it's difficult for me to wrap my head around
Again, if your goal is mutual understanding-- how is this helping you get there?
voicing your concerns about someone is part of reaching a mutual understanding

you posted something i found scummy. i explained why i found it scummy. you responded to my explanation. since that point, we've been going in circles and communicating in an ineffective way that has helped neither of us understand each other before

i would expand on this more, but i fundamentally do not understand your point. it feels like we're speaking two different languages
My point is clear.
You threw spaghetti at the wall. It did not stick. You accused me of being bad as a response to me prodding you.
You then threw more spaghetti at the wall. It still did not stick. You said I misunderstood a point and doubled down. I did not.
Your pasta isn't ready. Your stove is not on. There is no heat here.
I find both of these actions suspect; especially given that you went out of your way to say that your goal was understanding.

Is my point unclear or are you afraid of it?

I mean I understand what he's saying, but I think it's misplaced. I can at once say, "I think everything you just said is crap, but I would at least like to see how the other person respond to it" There is nothing suspicious in that to me. the more people talk to easier it is to get reads on them. I don't think it was a case worth following. Even if I think it originated with a civ.

from my point of view, the exchange just went like:

Dom: why did you suspect me?

SPF: here's why i suspect you

Dom: whoa, why are you focusing on accusing me?

SPF: i'm not focusing on you - i was answering your question

Dom: why aren't you focused on accusing me more?

like....i am not trying to be obtuse or snarky - i am just totally baffled by this line of questioning and i think it might be a good idea if we dropped it

by the way, Jess (spf) being sort of destabilized in a sense from the game because of getting pressured as town is a real thing. idk how to explain it succinctly

basically; the fact Jess is explaining herself in the way she is, makes me feel like her emotions are genuine, rather than an attempt to get pressure off herself

Mostly because she's not really under enough pressure for me to believe that scum!Jess would need to give what amounts to AtE to get that pressure off her, and rather it feels like town!Jess expressing how she's actually feeling
You seem to know spf better than I do.

No, I wouldn't characterize his play as either too serious or too jokey. I kind of wrote this accusation off because old schoolers like the three of us come from games where shitposting was not a thing. So it's not surprising for one of to throw out an actual accusation on Day 1.

The only thing that keeps me from calling him null is probably that accusation.

i had early townleans on sloonei and foresight in the early game. i know that sloonei is a strong player regardless of his alignment, and i was reluctant to out an early townread on him for a number of reasons (not wanting to be wrong, feeling like outing a tr on a player like sloonei that i could not fully substantiate would draw heat on me). i had an early townlean on foresight as well, but since both of my townleans more or less boiled down to: "tone", it seemed smarter to me to imply that i had townreads without saying the specific names. this almost always get interesting and alignment-indicative reactions, like i've gone over several times in my ISO already

my choice to not out reads got some immediate and strong reactions - sloonei and foresight (ironically, my two townleans at the time) aggressively interrogated me about it, and foresight showed some sincere annoyance/anger at my refusal to name the specific names. both of these reactions strengthened the reads that i already had - i didn't think that foresight would carry a high level of internal frustration about me not outing my reads if he was playing from a scum mindset, and sloonei's questioning toward me was direct and aggressive while still carrying a broader depth of thought that i heavily associate with his towngame

those compounding factors (along w/the fact that foresight seemed genuinely annoyed) made me decide to bite the bullets and name the names. it was not intended to be a game-long reaction test that would get me a read on EVERY player here, but it helped me get a more confident townread on the two townleans i already had

i want this post to be a reference for any lingering questions you have about my early reads - i don't want to get caught up in defending myself against points that i've already expanded on, because my scumhunting will probably suffer as a result
OK- let me accept this for a moment.

Why so defensive about it? Can you explain why my prodding became an accusation you made?
i've been a little defensive/cagey about it in the last page or so because i've felt that i've been answering the exact same questions for the last 7 pages. it's a point that feels so nitpicky and semantic to me, so for it to be a heavy focus for multiple people is a little bit grating, especially since i tend to get overly focused on the pressure on me in the early game (which tends to make the situation worse, lol)

i asked you that question because your progression toward me rubbed me the wrong way a little bit. you came into the thread with a piggyback of a suspicion that sloonei had already outed - but then you misunderstood the reasons for his suspicion, and then still doubled down even when you got corrected. when i paired that with the fact that i felt i had already gone into detail about that progression already, it made me concerned that your scumhunting was coming from a shallow place. it wasn't an actual scumread though - moreso just me getting pinged in the moment and wanting to see how you reacted to shade
I was not actually misunderstanding. I was miscommunicating. I knew what sloonei meant. I just didn't express myself correctly. I stated this, however, very clearly.
Any reason you're trying to make this about me?

little bit of a weird meme but I don't think it was a response to pressure really

That being said he has a few off things in his ISO. Mostly, I disagree his response to SPF was towny. It felt overly emotional in a performative way, similar feeling I've gotten from a couple of his other posts. I've played with c4 a couple times but tbh never paid particular attention to him (lol at this because I do remember the most previous game he said people don't pay him much attention), so I'll probably read those some time to see if he's normally overly emotive but I don't remember him being so day 1?

Also didn't like the way he responded to my question of "if you care about thread discussion so much why didn't you ask me about my read;" he said it was obvious and he didn't need to question me about it, then said he thought the read I was talking about was on Falcon not KZA and to give him a sec, then never actually talked about it again
Ya i went back to reread and there was less pressure there than i remembered, just alison and kza throwing out maf reads. I still generally don't love self votes tho, they feel real "jajaja i am so unphazed by suspicion on me, i am treating it as a joke". The quick switch off himself and onto another joke vote felt off to me as well, like a distancing vote bc it felt like he felt the need to change it or something idk.

c4 reads like a bit of a spaz, not sure i would put much stock into how emotive his posts are, that is probably nai for him (altho i don't have meta there so)

He is, as has been pointed out, basically never serious, and especially not, from what I've seen, at SoD1

don't think he's certainly scum for him, but the stark playstyle change to his town games I've seen, makes him decently >rand scum imo
i've played one wolf game and one town game w/long con, and in both cases, he had a lot of apathy/detachment from the general gamestate

the difference in his play in this game is certainly stark, but i don't think that starkness is inherently alignment indicative. i actually quite like his tone even if it's distinct from how i've seen him play in the past
I haven't viewed lc as particularly serious this game.

To clarify: spf did not change her read on me. The change of mind was about her willingness to share the town read on me.
I understand and am not communicating clearly.

I still don't get it.
what specifically do you not get? i want to help you out but i don't understand the concern
It is a question I asked as well.

First, you teased the two town reads. Then you revealed that I was one of them. You also suggested that you’d been hesitant or unwilling to announce a town read on me just a few minutes earlier.

What happened in between that made you go from “I don’t want to reveal my town read on Sloonei” to “I better announce my town read on Sloonei”?
the progression went like:

-i wanted to share that i had specific townreads, but i didn't want to state the names for a plurality of reasons

-i got a lot of reactions, discussions, and provocation from my choice to not share the names

-i decided to share the names

the focus on this specific progression on me is weirding me out a bit tbh, but i don't think it's inherently scummy. it just feels nitpicky
Do you find it important that I apply pressure to an inconsistency I see to see someone's motivations?
Why are you concerned about being nitpicked?
Are you more concerned about being nitpicked than understood?

2. one of my early townleans was on you, but i felt uncomfortable outing that early into the game for a number of reasons. (partially out of the vanity of not wanting to be wrong). the other was on foresight
My concern, as TSP alludes to, is that spf's secret town reads maneuver is something I do often, and notably did in the Champs Finale to the frustration of about half the roster. Part of me feels like spf is mirroring my town meta here, maybe unconsciously, as a way to earn my trust.

We have played... three? games together. Two were in the Champs setting (both town/town), and more recently we were scum partners in Grasslands here on The Syndicate. When we've been town together, we were both distinctly aware of one another (I think. I was aware of her, at least) because our playstyles are similar. I would expect a mafia staypositivefriend to be hyper aware of my perception of her in this game, in what would be the first game we've ever been aligned opposite each other. So kicking the game off by doing a combative thing that Town Sloonei does for attention would be a viable way to do that.

Except, like Foresight says, there really wasn't much call for that play here. When I did it in Champs, the thread was moving at a breakneck pace, but I felt it was lacking traction. I did it to slow things down and get people to focus on particular issues. This thread was not moving at a fast pace when spf dropped her post. If anything, it needed more spiciness.

I'm also unclear why she was hesitant to declare a town read on me a half hour ago, but is comfortable doing so now.
the thing is - i do the "I Have Secret Reads That I'm Not Gonna Share Yet" is a maneuver that i do very commonly as either alignment

i did it in grasslands when we were teamed together, i did it in the rock falls invitational game when i was town, and i even did it multiple times in champs. it's just a style of scumhunting/provoking discussion that i really like doing, and i think it's a mistake to assume that this tactic that i do incredibly often of my own accord is something that i'm doing to appeal specifically to ~you~. truthfully, i didn't even associate that tactic with your playstyle at all

i would probably be incredibly aware about your perception of me if i rolled mafia against you, but your analysis implies a depth of thought that i haven't actually put into my posts so far.

my choice to withhold my reads provoked a lengthy discussion that we are still discussing right now 5 pages later - do you not agree that this might be more valuable than if i had simply said: "i townlean foresight and sloonei' and left it at that?
do not trust !

Can I say that the best thing to happen in my absence is the new multi-quote feature?

I disagree with the post
Oh
is spf doing this something you think she would need to cognizantly replicate or just something she would do unintentionally?
I don't know. She could do it unintentionally, semi-intentionally, or fully intentionally.

My concern is twofold: A) it is something she has seen me do and earn town credit for in a high profile spot.
B) I do not feel like there was an organic reason for her to utilize that play at that moment.
well I'd argue two things

if spf is aware of you and minor facets of your playstyle to the degree she unintentionally replicates it, it's likely she would do the same as town too

and if it's something spf would need to consciously replicate, well I just don't think spf is someone who considers the player list and get play to that extent as scum because:

I believe she intends to not high effort this game

jess doesn't actively plan out what to do as scum
I assume spf is Jess.
Do you think baddies usually plan every single action out as a massive manipulation tactic? If you really think this, I have news for you.

kza town read is cause of this post where he very casually gave information to defend me 👍

towny because he felt prompted to say something in it without a clear motive

so I figure the motive is a genuine want for discussion
Which discussion? Whether you prefer scum roles or not? It's towny to want to delve deeper into that? Was he even doing that?? His comment sounds quite offhanded to me, not indicative of "genuine want for discussion" or an opposition to it. Are you sure this is a real read?
yes, the discussion is relating to my alignment, or you know, solving. And the off handed nature of it is why it's genuine. He did it because he wanted to. He didn't have any clear goal with his read
Now you seem to be contradicting yourself.

How can he display a motive of genuine want for discussion and also have no clear goal with his read?

Re: Fallout 2: A Post-Nuclear Mafia Game [Day 1]

Hi all-- I am catching up and hope to keep up throughout the game going forward. This school year has proven especially challenging for us teachers this year, so I will do my best. I'm glad to see new faces and some old friends. <3
c4e5g3d5 wrote: Sat Feb 27, 2021 6:02 pm Hey guys, metadiving is a huge PITA and so is figuring out whether NAI playstyle stuff is actually NAI playstyle stuff or not, so everyone gimme some playstyle cliffnotes. Here are mine.

What the fresh hell does this mean? Vague on vague on vague. I am not entertained.
