But don't worry, I'm not quitting this site because of this. Your game was awesome in ways no other games I've ever played were, and your ruleset does have advantages which I can't ignore, so it can make things fresh. I've never played a mafia game where I thought everything about it was perfect. Not even the games I hosted were like that. Every host has their own quirks that can make a game better or worse for each player depending on their tastes.
Awesome! I'm glad we'll be seeing more of you, you made more out of the Nash role than I imagined and were a pleasure to host.

Also, yay banners! Congrats again to Golden and all of our baddie winners.

I think that Russ and Llama would have been disappointed and I would have lost by default, since I did ask them if I could just upload a partial video (like 10 seconds), but I think that's it. Either of them can correct me though, since I'm not entirely sure.

My punishment for losing was that I couldn't produce or sell for the Night.
This is exactly correct.
G-Man wrote:I loved the idea of the singing contest and made the video but I had the video set to private at first. I sent the link to our hosts hoping they could view it because they had the direct link. A few hours after the deadline, I saw that I had been notified that the video wouldn't play for them. I think they gave us both an extra 24 hours to get the videos in.

The hardest part for me was choosing a song to sing. I wasn't sure if I should be serious or silly. Here's the shortlist I came up with:

"Under Pressure" by Queen and David Bowie (my ultimate choice because it had me going all over the place vocally and I LOVE this song)

"The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" by Weezer (I joked in LMS3 that this was my theme song- I actually sing it on my way to work everyday as a pick-me-up)

"Edelweiss" from The Sound of Music (gorgeous song and it's safe for my low range but I didn't want people to think I was claiming or hinting at being Menger)

"I Believe in a Thing Called Love" by The Darkness (I would have gotten too into this one and I realized that I didn't want any videos of me gyrating and thrusting on the internet)

"Summer" from Frozen (because who doesn't love Olaf?)

"It's Not Unusual" by Tom Jones (scrapped it because I didn't have enough time to choreograph my own version of The Carlton dance)
This setlist makes me so happy. :D

Re: Death and Taxes: An Economics Mafia [DAY 7]

Dragon D. Luffy wrote:One thing I don't understand is why implementing a cop is you are so vehemently against allowing the cop to use that information. Sure, not allowing role reveals is one thing, but wanting to modkill a player because he switched his reads too fast?

It gets too subjective for my tastes. What exactly is considered a cop "dumping information" and a cop "not dumping information"? Is he supposed to keep his apparent reads unchanged so there is no chance people will notice he is a cop? Or was he supposed to quote a few random posts from splints and pretend there was evidence for her being a townie in them?

At this point I'd rather stop implementing info roles in the games altogether, if I were you. Better than enforcing a very subjective set of roles to nerf the cop.

Sorry for the criticism, but this is just an aspect of this site that baffles me.
Well, the distinction I would make is that cops are supposed to use their info; their teammates generally aren't supposed to share in that benefit. Really that just comes down to a game balancing question. I have no doubt that if you made a cop role that was allowed to share it's info, you'd "nerf" the civvie team in other ways. So I think the end effect of the differing rules would be minimal.

As MP mentioned, I take an extremely negative stance on info dumping of any type because I have seen it ruin games over and over. It simply takes all the fun, and all of the mafia, out of mafia for me. And I have definitely seen info dumping absolutely wreck games even when it wasn't an explicit outing per se. Someone changing stance radically just as dawn breaks is a fairly established tell on this site for "I have info", which is why I considered coming down on it hard. To answer your questions about alternatives, yes, your suggestions for handling info were what I would consider the "right" way to play it within my rules. Pretend that you're believing a player's defense if you've found out they're civ and being suspected, or find something, however small, in their posts that incriminates them if you've found they're bad. Even just say that they read as genuine/not genuine to you and say that you might be changing your mind on them, and take a post or two exchanged with them to come around.

I find games with some amount of info in them to be more exciting, so I'll keep including info roles in my games. Will I have another unmitigated straight-up nightly role check? Probably not, for some of the reasons you discussed above. But imo TH played a perfect info role game: he managed to help the civs lynch baddies without ever implying that he had info. Sure, a few people seem to have cottoned on to his role, but figuring out roles is half the fun of mafia. And to me the essential point is that they figured it out more because he was on a hot streak with his reads than because of anything he said. So, in true mafia style, they figured it out for themselves instead of having it waved in their faces.

As for subjectiveness, I don't think you found that in this game to a greater extent than any other game that has rules of any type. Sure, I had a strict stance. Say what you want otherwise, but I made my stance abundantly clear in the pregame rules. It says that you're breaking the rule by even implying that you have info, real or fake. If you break that you're risking a modkill; pretty clear-cut. But there's subjectivity in enforcement of any rule, in or out of mafia. For example, BTSC is prohibited unless expressly granted in most games. Is a player reminding a friend that the game has started and they need to post a violation of that? They're not talking in thread. And what about rules against being an asshat? That's a HUGE issue in mafia, and it's probably the most subjective rule of all. There's tons of factor to consider, like is a player being mean-spirited, trying to get a reaction in order to make a voting decision, or simply getting into the persona of a role? Are they joking around and forgot to use sarcastic orange, or are they seriously putting someone down? There's no way for a mod to decide how they will rule on a case like that before the game starts.

I appreciate your advice on "more elegant" solutions to the info role conundrum. My advice to you is this: Yes, The Syndicate isn't like every other mafia site you've played at, and that's probably a good thing. Not to say there is even the slightest thing wrong with any site you've been at, but a diversity of styles and cultures means this game can appeal to a broader range of people. And I say the more the merrier. So please, feel welcome, give it a try, and see what you think of our flavor of the game. Definitely share ideas from other places, too, because taking a little of the best from everywhere is a great way to improve mafia here. If, after a few game, you've found that you don't enjoy the games being offered or don't agree with the rules set, stop playing. We'll be sad to see you go, but we understand that you should play mafia that gives you joy, not makes you frustrated or stressed.

Re: Death and Taxes: An Economics Mafia [DAY 7]

I thought of a few more! Sorry for the spam.

G-Man's sign-off to this game was, hands down, the best one I have ever seen.

Also, MP was nearly modkilled for being too obvious about having info. He and llama were able to placate me, but it seems from the postgame that most players had figured out a variant of what was up. If I had to do it all over again, I can't honestly say whether I would dead him or not.]

When the civvies went up 7-1, I was worried that we had made an unbalanced game, and that specifically a straight civilian role check with no mitigating factors was too strong. Obviously, that proved not to be as big a concern as I had feared.

Re: Death and Taxes: An Economics Mafia [DAY 7]

Now, for some reveals!

1) JJJ, I know you were saying all game that you went 0fer on Night protects, but you were wrong! You actually protected Black Rock from Elohcin on Night 1, which turned out to be pretty big. This caused a lot of confusion, because MP copied her power that Night and killed Epi, so most people thought that MP has a power steal instead of a copy for a long time afterward.

2) TH, as he said, came extremely close to being able to protect himself the Night he was killed. (And by the way, he did an incredible job as Akerlof and handled his role extremely well, even with a host who takes a strong stance against info dumping, as some of you found out. His problem was this: he needed to produce his Nightly resource and then trade in resources for the protection to get it. All Night actions, however, occur at exactly the same time at the end of Night, so just as he got all the pieces he needed for his item, he was killed without being able to purchase it. This was reflected in the Night post.

3) sanmateo actually did have a lynch stop the Day he was lynched...for a while. It was confiscated because he discussed it in thread. This was due in part to a miscommunication between the host. It was a clear violation of Rule 3 on the first page, and it also definitely amount to a role hint: a number of players speculated that he must be Solow or the civvie item upgrader. However, I missed that llama had actually said later on in the thread that talking about items was ok. (You all posted a lot, alright?) This tripped up a few people, who were also punished. However, for sanmateo it was too late: by the time Vomps pointed out what llama had said, sanmateo was dead. To his credit, he handled it as classily as possible, and it was a situation that would have very much frustrated me as a player. I am still considering awarding him the win postmortem.

Of course, this had a huge impact on the game. If sanmateo had stopped the lynch, Golden would likely have had to survive an extra phase. My personal belief is that he still would have pulled it off: the most likely result after sanmateo stopped the lynch was that he would've been lynched again, imo, and even if he weren't, Golden was so low on everyone's list at the end of the game that I think pulling off an extra Day would have been very very doable. Especially considering fingersplints was bound to vote for at least 2 people due to her role power.

So, I do owe the civvies an apology for a hostly...inconsistency. Again, watching things as they unfolded, Golden winning would still have been the most likely scenario, but I don't know that for sure.

Llama and I actually did field quite a few questions about how production of guns and butter, sales, and items worked, and as I mentioned, more than one player was confused about what constituted info dumping with regards to items. So I thank you all for bearing with me on those things and for making this an incredible game despite the setbacks you experienced.

Re: Death and Taxes: An Economics Mafia [DAY 7]

Hostly Thank-Yous

First off, one man deserves credit for how well this game turned out....me.

Just kidding! thellama73 did roughly 95% of the work of making this game what it was. I came to him with the idea (oh my God, was it...two summers ago??), and he absolutely ran with it. He created most of the role and item powers, including one of the most epic roles of all time for one of the best economists of all time, John Nash, who as someone already pointed out coincidentally passed away during the game. He also pulled double duty in this game as Host in Control of Night Things, which thanks partly to the items was a tremendous amount of work, and Mod, which did require some time on a few occasions. He did splendidly in both roles throughout, and even covered my posting duties when I was indisposed. I had a great time doing this, and he was a huge part of that.

Of course, the players this game were absolutely incredible. I really thought that the new blood injected some life into the game, and seeing what was or wasn't clear to the newbies was very enlightening for me as a host, since I've only ever played on The Syndicate and accept all of our little quirks as mafia standards. We also set a post record for a speed game! Admittedly, being 48/24 helped, but it is still quite a feat. The newbies deserve a lot of credit for this, especially since two very talkative players, Epi and MM, died early on.

The civvies played a hell of a game, and actually had me rooting for them for large stretches of time (sorry, Golden). I have never once on this site seen three successful lynches in a row, and you all deserved a win, but you had defeat snatched form the jaws of victory.

There were some incredible individual performances, as well. Golden played, hands down, the best baddie game I have ever seen in my mafia career. His entire team died, and a decent number of players had been suspicious of his predecessor, BWT, but he somehow managed to turn it all around and come out on top. To be honest, I still don't quite understand ho he pulled it off. G-Man did something we've never seen before in a game, and probably inspired some new role mechanics here. I know that next time I am a baddie, I fear JJJ as much as anyone on the site. This is truly just the tip of the iceberg - everyone contributed something that helped make this, in my humble opinion, a terrific game, and you all deserve some credit for that.

Re: Death and Taxes: An Economics Mafia [DAY 7]

Day 7: A Wonderful New World

The tension was palpable as the four remaining players shut themselves in a small dining hall on the second floor to hash out a plan of action for the day. G-Man, of course, continued to communicate via picture, while Vomps remained mostly silent and noncommittal. This was a stark contrast from the impassioned cries of fingersplints and Golden, who argued their points forcefully.

The pressure-cooker situation was getting to them all, but they stayed as calm as they could and tried to reason through the problem. However, all too soon, the sunset could be seen outside their window. They all knew, as the dusky light filtered through a Dutch haze, that the sun's farewell would not be the only red seen in the room that Night. There would be blood shed here.

Finally, Vompatti and Golden could stand it no longer. They stood up and pointed guns at G-Man. "Stand still, Comrade!" They shouted in unison, and seized him by the arms. G-Man, clever man that he was, was prepared, and had greased his arms with butter before entering the room. He slipped their grip and bolted for the door.

They chased after, yelling, "Communist swine! You killed some of the brightest minds in human history! We will have vengeance!"

As G-Man ran, he burst out into defiant song, laughing hysterically. Whether he was merely frightened or had been overtaken by some communist mania, no one could discern.

He was rounding a corner, about to slide down the balustrade and dive for the front door, when a foot appeared from a small alcove covered in drapes. fingersplints, familiar with the many secret passages of the Hague, had beaten G-Man. He never saw the foot, and his last feeling as he descending the stairs was a delicious tingling in his tummy.

His pursuers sprinted after him, having heard a thud and a crunch that was all too familiar by now. Golden seized G-Man's head, and saw the light fade from his eyes just as the last sunlight faded from the sky. Golden, at Vomps' prompt, checked the dead man's wallet.

"What does it say?" Golden asked, and Vomps responded "Exactly that."

Golden looked up quizzically. "What do you mean, 'Exactly that.'? What does it SAY??

Vomps responded, "It says Say." The two hung their heads, knowing they had made a terrible mistake.

That night, two players slept soundly in their beds. A little too soundly, in fact, for the wine they had drunk that night had been tainted. Vompatti woke only a bit when someone barged into his room and muttered angrily, "You didn't see the red during all the weeks we had together. Well red will be the last thing you ever see!" Vomps' throat was the first of two throats slit that Night.

The next day, one player stepped out onto the terrace of the Hague, proud to announce a new redevelopment plan for all of Europe. "We will be instituting an 88% tax, the proceeds of which will go entirely to funding investments in technology! That is, of course, the only way to grow an economy on a per capita basis. And finally, I declare myself President for Life of Europe."

Golden's name seemed apt as he smiled dazzlingly into he numerous cameras, thrilled that his vision for a better society could finally become a reality.

G-Man has been lynched. He was Jean-Baptiste Say.
Golden has won! He was Robert Solow. He and the other baddies will paint Europe red (in a purely ideological sense). Congratulations to the victors!

Night 7: My Mercury's In Retrograde

After sanmateo's lynch, the normally rational economists were beginning to become fearful. They began to discuss a mysterious event known as "lylo", in which the world and the people in it may behave in strange and mysterious ways. It seemed to be similar to a blood moon, El Niño, or mercury being in retrograde on a massive scale.

Many continued to produce in preparation for the trials ahead, causing an economic BOOM!

However, they were so engrossed in their individual work that they barely noticed when the normally loquacious JaggedJimmyJay fell silent. They found him the next morning, facedown on his desk, poisoned in the Night.

Day 7: The Fleetingness of Time

DDL's death had put a tiny crack in the sense of indestructibility experienced by the civs. They realized that now there was a chance that their capitalist utopia could still be torn down before it was even built. To compound the problem, the sun seemed to be moving much faster across the sky, leaving them less time to discuss how to put their ideas into practice.

As the sun was dipping below the horizon, they rounded squarely on sanmateo. "You were friends with those dirty Communists!" they said. He protested, but couldn't convince the others.

"I'm wearing a bulletproof vest!" he shouted at them. "You can''t kill me; this is a waste of time!" The group huddled up, and asked themselves what to do about his conundrum. Someone astutely observed that he wasn't wearing a bulletproof vest on his head, and so they shot him there. They had no more time to waste; there was work to be done.

sanmateo has been lynched. He was Joseph Schumpeter.

some food for thought. i don't actually demand a response to this; it's just something to consider (if you haven't already). in most games, if a 3 vs 1 "LyLo" phase ends in a lynched townie, then the game is over. obviously the lynch makes it 2 vs 1, and the night kill makes it 1 vs 1. ballgame, mafia wins.

that might not necessarily be true in this game. 1 vs 1 might still be winnable for town because of guns and butter. just something to chew on. :)

Night 6: Exit the Dragon

Their confidence newly dented, the group put their heads together to try to reassess the situation, looking at all available data. Since there was so much data available, they decided to divide up the labor. They all went into separate rooms and pored over their books.

Dragon D. Luffy was in a small, cozy office, with mahogany bookshelves and a small, green-shaded lamp. He looked up, startled, when the lights went out. "Hey! Turn that back on! There's someone in here, you know!"

He paused, waiting for a "Oh! Sorry," and a resumption of his reading. All he heard, however, was the squeak of a shoe on the stone floor nearby. He sat rooted to his chair, listening even more closely. Then he heard another creak, growing from near silence to fill the room, and a multitudinous whispering, like win blowing through leaves. There was a thunk, and then another, and still more, and something landed on his head. "Ow!" he exclaimed, and it was the last thing he said before the bookshelf he had been sitting by fell on him and crushed him. He never even knew what happened.

Dragon D. Luffy has been killed by Robert Solow.

Mafia is a heated game. We all have our moments. But the difference is being able to own up to behavior that crossed the line and make an attempt to resolve it.
It's all a matter of whether you and your opponent are in the same page. If you've both a agreed to play a game where you call each other scum and liars, you should be fine with it. But sometimes one player goes further than what the other had actually agreed on, and shit happens.

So you have to use your common sense and know when to stop. But remember the game always has some limit, even if you are having trouble seeing where it is.
The Social Contract Theory of Mafia! I love the philosophical direction we're taking here. And this actually makes a lot of sense to me.

Re: Death and Taxes: An Economics Mafia [DAY 6]

Day 6: Decisive

Having proven that the trinity was, in fact, possible, the group felt very confident as they began the day's discussion. So confident, in fact, that they had decided the lynch by breakfast. As they sat about a table munching cornflakes, all of them cast their ballots for aether. Golden was too absorbed with eating his Golden Crisp, though, and missed the box. "Oops," he said sheepishly, only half looking up.

The rest of the day was spent with a good deal of relaxing, some more competitive music (a popular hobby among economic geniuses, it seems), and prayers to the Sun God to hurry his charge's crossing of the sky.

Finally, the day did come to an end, but not the end that many had hoped. They chucked aether out another tall window (which was, disturbingly, also getting to be a bit of a group pastime). They were just about to walk out the front door to announce their plan to save Europe when a letter popped in through the letter slot. They tore it open, wondering what it could be. "The Dutch have decided that we will, in fact, continue to collect taxes, starting with taxes on the internal economy of the Hague as a test group. We believed you people would be a boon to us, but funding your drinking is getting to be expensive. Sincerely, the Flying Dutchmen and Women" (The Flying Dutchmen and Women, of course, being the Dutch Parliament.) (The letter, being in Dutch, also contained a great number of goofy extra vowels, but has been edited for our very international audience.)

acrosstheaether has been lynched. She was Rothbard.
As a result of Rothbard's death, taxes have been reinstated. All players will immediately pay a tax.

How long until EoD from now?
Ah, I see. Well if it became truly insurmountable, the Day could be ended early. However, I usually only do this if every vote has been placed, as there is sometimes a penalty for missing votes. There is also a lot of potential lynch manipulation in this game. And more practically, I have to leave of work right now, so the lynch will have to end at or shortly after the scheduled EoD, which is 6:26pm Eastern (US) Time.

Re: Death and Taxes: An Economics Mafia [DAY 6]

Important Hostly Updates:

Day 6 may end an hour or two late. We are having a happy hour with work tomorrow to welcome the summer interns, and I am expected to attend.

Assuming there are subsequent Nights and/or Days:

Night 6 will probably end early, due to schedule constraints in llama's life. This means that Night 6 will be shortened, probably by 2-3 hours. You still have to get your PMs submitted in time for them to count, so make sure to plan accordingly.

Days beyond this one will be 24 hours, in order to keep up the pace of this speed game.

Re: Death and Taxes: An Economics Mafia [NIGHT 5]

Night 5 - Comparative Advantage

With a third anti-capitalist fool gone, the group felt that they could soon come to a consensus on a plan for the future and get back out into the world. They all made feverish preparations for end-game: some back-patting and final strategy meetings were had, there was nearly a run on Logan's Patented Single-Use Disposable Kevlar Vests, and even Russti pushed up his lecture schedule to make sure everyone understood the basic concepts of economics before they left. (But of course they did, being the most brilliant minds the world has seen!)

Turnip Head wanted out as badly as anyone, of course. He worked all Night trying to save up for a vest, thinking that soon he might get to see his tuber-topped family again. He worked so feverishly, in fact, that as he hustled down to the market where other players exchanged their guns and butter for currency, the sun was just coming over the horizon. He slid into the room, heels squeaking on marble floors, only to see that the sign had been taken down. He cast about, and saw the back of the nocturnal shopkeeper headed toward his bed, a long way off down the hall.

"Wait! Stop! I need a vest! I'll pay anything!" he cried, but the elderly keeper was slightly deaf and didn't him.He took off in pursuit, still shouting, and his cries got some attention - just not the kind he had hoped for. Solow, up ahead, saw the shopkeeper toddle by, and tucked himself quickly into an alcove. When Turnip Head ran past, Solow simply stood up and shot him in the back. TH fell with a gurgle and a thump, and that was that. His body was found that morning, and the group vowed to avenge his death.

Turnip Head has been killed by Robert Solow.
Continued high production has led to another boom!

Re: Death and Taxes: An Economics Mafia [DAY 5]

Day 5: They're on Fire!

The group was laser-focused after the sobering events of last night. They felt that they were very close to solving Europe's economic woes, and so in the morning they all crowded together, weary from the Night's labors, and had an earnest discussion about how to proceed.

"We've already lowered taxes to 0," they groupthought aloud. "Now what about if we get rid of that pesky minimum wage?"

Heads began to nod in agreement, but a whisper was heard from the fringe of the huddle. "What? Allow the commoners to slave away for the ruling class, without even the promise of a comfortable life to soothe their aching backs?"

The group spied around, distrustful, trying to suss out the speaker. Then, from another corner, "Yes, yes! Exploit the means of production while you can. The suckle from the teat of the working poor! You, born with silver spoons in your mouths, while away your days in this fortress, and I have seen that you don't give a damn about the people outside who have to live in the economic reality that sustains you."

By this point, everyone was agitated, whispering among themselves and whipping their heads to and fro. They must catch the fiend who dared poison such productive discussion with radical socialist ideas!

Bass_the_Clever hopped up onto a table top,and pointed a shaking finger directly at G-Man. Angry hands seized G-Man from all sides, believing that Bass was pointing out the heretic. But then Bass shouted att he top of his lungs, "THE DICTATORSHIP OF THE PROLETARIAT IS AT HAND!"

From there, matters were simple. They grabbed at Bass, and two people held him down while the others broke the table into kindling. They saved one table leg to tie him to, and then lit a merry blaze in the middle of the Great Hall. Bass's screams of "BOURGEOIS SWINE!" and "YOU WILL REAP WHAT YOU SOW!" rose to the ceiling with the smoke, and as they trailed off into wailing and then silence, the flames burned as red as his ideology had.

The rest of the group sighed with satisfaction, and then went off to sleep.

Bass_the_Clever has been lynched. He was Karl Marx.

Re: Death and Taxes: An Economics Mafia [NIGHT 4]

To clarify:

The way I run my games is this. The kill is a role power held by a certain player. However, should that player die, the kill passes down to the next player on the role list until the entire baddie team has been eliminated. I should have noted this in the role descriptions; apologies for any confusion. I didn't realize some of these differences in game setup existed at other sites, and thus failed to elaborate on some thing that are ordinary to me.

So someone will be dying tonight. :feb:

Re: Death and Taxes: An Economics Mafia [DAY 4]

Day 4 - The Death of an Idea

The discussion the next day began with Roxy at the forefront. In fact, it ended that way, too. Very little discussion about anyone else occurred, come to think of it. Actually, in a way, that made a lot of sense. Roxy's theories, when she had arrived on the economics scene, had been so bold as to make her a bit of a rock star. She was one of the most talked-about economists of all time, but today's accusations proved too much.

"I QUIT," she shouted angrily. The group was all too happy to help her along. She began to run as they started throwing things at her, and thought she was safe when she took a staircase up and hid in a small chamber in the highest tower. It was no use, though; the group found her an chucked her right out. As she fell, she screamed, "YOU FOOOOLS! THE ECONOMY TAKES TOO LONG TO SELF-CORRECT! WE NEED TO SPUR ECONOMIC GROWTH IN TIMES OF DISTRESS!" (It was a very high tower.) Defenestration complete, the others went back to their nightly tasks.

Roxy has been killed. She was John Maynard Keynes.

Re: Death and Taxes: An Economics Mafia [NIGHT 3]

Night 3 - Invisible Hands

The group was overjoyed with yesterday's result, and so they threw a party! They stood about in small groups, listening to raps about economics and pontificating some more. There was even music! The group was treated to some delightful warbling courtesy of MP and G-Man. MP's performance got a smattering of applause, but the crowd erupted into cheers when G-Man left the stage, and he was clapped heartily upon the back and offered free "imported sodas" for his trouble.

As at any party, some extroverts, like JJJ and MovingPictures07, stood right in the middle of the group, fairly bellowing in their joy and beaming convivially. Others grouped around them, and still a few more hung about at the edges, quietly sipping on their beverages of choice.

TinyBubbles, being something of a newcomer to the group and a bit shy, was one such. She leaned back against a pillar in the massive ballroom, looking into her drink and smiling to herself. When no one was looking, a pair of hands slid around the pillar from behind her and squeezed her neck. She tried to kick out at her attacker, but the pillar prevented an effective defense. She tried screaming, but the viselike grip around her throat choked off a shout. Eventually, she sank to the floor, dark purple bruises on her neck left by hands no one had seen.

When someone happened to look over and see poor TinyBubbles, the party ended very abruptly. The economists went about producing supplies in order to survive the remainder of the time they would spend her. They were so focused on their tasks, in fact that they caused a BOOM! in their little internal economy.

As the sun rose, they felt as ready for the challenges that lay ahead as could be hoped.

TinyBubbles has been killed!

Re: Death and Taxes: An Economics Mafia [DAY 3]

Day 3: Success!

The group, having dispatched of Malthus, was put at ease somewhat, and felt they could get down to the business of coming up with an economic plan.

Many members of the group proposed tax cuts to spur growth and unchain the free market from the cumbersome shackles of bureaucracy. Black Rock tried to shout them down, insisting, "We need taxes! Without them, how will we pay for roads? Who will care for the elderly and unemployed? How will we undertake projects that better our whole society without producing profit???"

The group heard all of this, and decided it was a crock. They said, "We'll privatize roads! And parks and libraries, for that matter! Under our system, there will be no unemployed! And as to the elderly, if they haven't saved throughout their lives, they don't deserve to plunder our stores!"

With that, they put it to a vote, and the majority voted to repeal taxes entirely. They also motioned to behead Black Rock. That motion passed, too, and BR's head was subsequently dumped out the front door, attached to a placard that read "Death to Taxes and Their Supporters!" A rousing cheer went up from the hardy watchers that had not been dispersed by the previous days' violence.

Black Rock has been lynched. She was Ricardo. As a result, taxes have been repealed!!

The way polls work around here, you have to end them a multiple of 24 hours from when you start them. So 24 hours from when I get the poll up, it ends, and if I'm not being very exact it can end on odd minutes. People around here are used to it; I neglected to consider that some of the new players might not be. So it's really my mistake.

Re: Death and Taxes: An Economics Mafia [DAY 2]

Night 2: Hang On, Sloonei

Sloonei worked the night away, feverishly scribbling on chalkboards in a basement auditorium. Finally, at exactly 1:59am, he shouted, "Eureka!" at the top of his lungs. He had solved it! The equation that would make Europe the world's greatest economic superpower for decades, if not centuries, to come.

However, as the clock struck 2, his cry was heard by someone with dark designs. That person crept toward Sloonei, pausing by the auditorium door to plunge the room into blackness.

Sloonei called out again: "Guys?! Hey, wait, I solved it! I've got it all figured out! Turn the lights back on, will ya? Guys? Guys? .....Guys?

Most geniuses imagine their last words will be something profound that will echo through future generations. For Sloonei, that dream was not to be. Quick as a snake, Sloonei's assailant wrapped a thin wire around the poor genius's neck. A final confused "....guys?" Was all Sloonei could rasp out before a final gurgle and a thud as he slumped to the floor.

The assailant quickly erased what had been on the board, and then crept off into the night.

The other residents of the Hague worked through the Night as well, producing guns and butter off of which to live and die in the coming days. They created a household economic BOOM!

Sloonei has been killed!
