Re: [Day 5]: Film Directors.

Day 5: Death by Choreography

The ghost of Vomps said: "Busby Berkeley was a Hollywood movie director and musical choreographer. Berkeley devised elaborate musical production numbers that often involved complex geometric patterns. Berkeley's works used large numbers of showgirls and props as fantasy elements in kaleidoscopic on-screen performances."

If you have a baby or small child, I probably have sang this song to him/her [1].

"Which of his is your favorite?" asked Made.

"I like Gold Diggers of 1933," said Long Con.

"I prefer the classicism of 42nd Street," opined Dom.

"Who could forget Carmen Miranda in The Gang's All Here?" asked Roxy.

"I should get a hat like that," said Llama.

"Let's make kaleidoscopic patterns with our bodies!" said BirdWithTeeth11.

"HUMAN PYRAMID?!" exclaimed Metalmarsh.

The group formed a human carousel of people, with Made at the top. Someone pushed him off, and he toppled to the cold, hard ground.

Made has died. He was David Lean.

It is now Night 5. You have 30 hours[2] to send in your night actions and vote in the night poll.

And now a word from Eisenstein:

Hello ladies and Gents. So day four is over and poor Pedro Almodovar ended up getting lynched. So no baddies yet to be lynched but the baddies have only had one successful kill. Poor llama can't get a break. I still think MM needs to be lynched. Also is anyone else finding Black Rock a bit suspicious ? Well until next time all you cool kids.

I'm just getting home from St Pete after an exhausting weekend in more ways than one (hanging out with my soon to be former husband and in-laws while the latter are stateside) -- got back to hotel every night at 2am and then up at 8 so just really intense and cannot even fathom figuring out PMs tonight -- I'll post tomorrow during lunch break!

Re: [Day 4]: Film Directors.

Day 4: Get on the Damn Plane

Rick: Because you're getting on that plane.
Ilsa: I don't understand. What about you?
Rick: I'm staying here with him [Renault] 'til the plane gets safely away.
Ilsa: No, Richard. No. What has happened to you? Last night...
Rick: Last night, we said a great many things. You said I was to do the thinking for both of us. Well, I've done a lot of it since then and it all adds up to one thing. You're getting on that plane with Victor where you belong.
Ilsa: But Richard, no, I've...
Rick: Now, you've got to listen to me. Do you have any idea what you have to look forward to if you stayed here? Nine chances out of ten, we'd both wind up in a concentration camp. Isn't that true, Louis?
Renault: I'm afraid Major Strasser would insist.
Ilsa: You're saying this only to make me go.
Rick: I'm saying it because it's true. Inside of us, we both know you belong with Victor. You're part of his work, the thing that keeps him going. If that plane leaves the ground and you're not with him, you'll regret it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life.
Ilsa: But what about us?
Rick: We'll always have Paris. We didn't have it before...we'd...we'd lost it until you came to Casablanca. We got it back last night.
Ilsa: When I said I would never leave you...
Rick: And you never will. But I've got a job to do too. Where I'm going, you can't follow. What I've got to do, you can't be any part of. Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you'll understand that. Now, now. Here's looking at you, kid.

Announcements:

Thank you all for your submissions so far for the Misspelled Director's Chair event/game. You still another full day. At the end of Day 4, I'll notify the winners and alert them of their prize(s).

I'll be out of town this weekend (and every weekend in February, ugh), so my plan is to have Day 5 last three days instead of two. I will be with my in-laws who are stateside so won't have a ton fo time to make the Night post, BUT I will be able to check in occasionally and answer your questions.

Thank you for all being respectful to one another and for bearing with me as my TS access has been greatly lessened (due to work blocking it -- I sometimes go outside far enough where my phone gets signal to check for messages -- just that dedicated!)

Back to your regularly scheduled Day 4, already in progress.

Re: [Day 4]: Film Directors.

Night 3: Christopher Nolan Nation

Image

Christopher Nolan looks like a former workmate and was known for his start in cerebral, non-linear filmmaking in films like Following and Memento. Nowadays, Nolan is a bona fide blockbuster director with such colossal films as The Dark Knight, Inception and Interstellar under his belt.

Nolan has had his share of missteps. Insomnia was a critical flop despite pulling high-caliber powerhouse actor Al Pacino. It was perhaps the paradigm of ingenious concept, terrible execution.

I've always liked that he has co-written some of his films with his brother and that he owns a production company with his wife. Keepin' it in the family!

The Prestige is my favorite of his films because I like a) David Bowie as Tesla and b) a film about magicians/illusionists. That said, I actually prefer the similar film The Illusionist (this is an extreme minority opinion).

"What is your favorite film about magicians?" asked Made.

"Who needs a film about magicians when you have a real life illusionist right here?" asked Llama, thumbing at himself. "Watch me juggle!"

"I might have a magic trick, if you know what I mean," said BWT.

"I like The Wizard of Gore," said the ghost of Vompatti.

"Does Bedknobs and Broomsticks count?" said the spectre of A Person.

"Can I saw you in half?" asked Llama.

"Sure, let's do that," said BirdWithTeeth.

Birdy laid down in the box and Llama flourished his cape, which he always kept in his satchel (for emergencies). Llama cut through the box and into BirdWithTeeth, who began screaming.

"Wow, he's really screaming," said Spacedaisy.

"So realistic!" said Sabie.

Llama opened up the box and showed the audience. Blood was everywhere. The trick had not work and BWT was sawed in two.

"What have you done!" yelled Roxy.

"Someone must have switched my blade!" Llama said, aghast at the mistake.

BirdWithTeeth11 done died.
It is now Day 4.

Day 3: Welcome Back, Potter

Image

Alfonso Cuaron is a Mexican director perhaps best known for Y Tu Mama Tambien, Children or Men and Gravity. He is also known is certain circles as being the director for the third Harry Potter film, which has a few homages to Y Tu Mama in certain scenes, if you know what to look for.

"He won the BAFTA for Best Director last year for Gravity," announced Ninjambalaya.

"Aren't he and two other dudes known as 'The Three Amigos of Cinema?" asked LongCon.

"Yeah, him and Alejandro González Iñárritu and Guillermo del Toro," answered Timmer helpfully.

"Hot," said Lizzy.

Vomps looked at Lizzy. He ignited from desire and the cafe exploded.

Compare with the street shoot in Azkaban below to see how his style carries through.

Notice the rotating shots and muted palette on both films. These are films grounded in reality, but with a melancholy filter of ethereal madness overlaid upon them.

Vompatti has been lynched. He was Francois Truffaut.
It is now Night 3.

So here is the recap folks mp got lynched, and it could have been a vomp save. So vomps might be worth a vote this next day phase. If you aren't feeling a vomps vote I would suggest looking a MM somethings up with that guy. Well till next time folks .

Re: [Night 2]: Film Directors.

Night 2: Who Peed in My Cornflakes?

Image
Ida Lupino did not pee in your cornflakes.

Ida Lupino was a visionary filmmaker. During a time that filmmaking was largely a man's gig, she brought strong acting and camerawork to the screen.

Perhaps best known for such classic hits as The Big Knife (starring Jack Palance andherself) and The Hitch-hiker (she was the first woman to direct a Film Noir), Lupino was also an actress who was frequently cast as a femme fatale or naughty girl.

FZ thought someone had actually peed in her cornflakes when they had not. She died at the thought of it.

FZ has died.
It is now Day 3. You now have 48 hours to find the serial cereal killer.

Happy Saturday, sweet players.

I'll be out this afternoon doing indoor rock climbing, but I should not have any problem getting the Night 2 post up on time.

Don't forget to post your entry by COB tonight if you'd like to participate in the contest. Have fun with it!

Enjoy mise-en-scene from 2006's ethereal beauty The Fall:

Re: [Night 2]: Film Directors.

Event: Directors Respond to Negative Film Reviews

Image

Roger Ebert was known for his sometimes scathing reviews of film.

Ebert's story is being told in the new biodoc Life Itself. I sobbed uncontrollably when I read these memoirs (before he died) because they were so beautiful. Reading his thoughts on Bergman's Persona or meeting Fellini were breathtakingly effervescent.

Additionally, negative reviews can be hilarious in nature.

For today's challenge (optional as always), your job is to write a snippet AS any director responding to a fake negative review of your film. Feel free to a fake quote or include block quotes from this hypothetical bad review. Alternatively, you may respond AS any director responding to an actual negative review of the film.

Be hilarious! Have fun with it.

Post your submissions within the game thread by the end of Night 2 for one doozy of a prize. The winner will be selected by a neutral third party.

Day 2: When Harry Met Sally

It was finally time for the class to fuel up on some scrumptious vittles.

"Do you have any liver casserole?" Vomps asked the waiter.

"Uhhh, we have turkey burgers?" said Biff the waiter.

"This reminds me of a film," said SVS.

"Harry Met Sally, right?" said Roxy.

"Oh, I love Nora Ephron," said Sabie.

"She wasn't just a rom com queen, she was a highly-lauded and cerebral writer transposing visceral emotions into transformative levity on the big screen," mentioned the waiter, as he jotted down their orders.

"What will you have, sir?" Biff the waiter asked Ricochet.

Ricochet nodded in Lizzy's direction. "I'll have what she's having."

The host is also a big fan of delis.

Host Note: When I auditioned for UF's Performing Arts program, I had two classmates in my acting class audition using this skit. Me and my classmate auditioned with the $5 milkshake scene in Pulp Fiction.

MovingPictures has died from too much deli meat. He was Stanley Kubrick - truly the best friend a bird could ask for.

It is now Night 2. You have 24 hours to send me your night actions and vote in the (optional) night poll.

An event is on the horizon.

Hiya Mongoose. I'd love an answer to this when you get a chance.
I don't portray how the kill fails happened. Anything in the story is just for flavor :)

Thanks for requoting this, I missed it the first time.

Re: [Day 2]: Film Directors.

Night 1: Day, Night, Day, Night

Has anyone seen the movie Day Night Day Night? I watched it when it first came out, and it's been with me ever since.

Image

"It's haunting in a truly cerebral way," mentioned Long Con.

"It looks funny now when 'ture' or its derivatives are spelled correctly," said Sockface.

"That film isn't rated very highly on IMDb," said Black Rock.

"But it's a tour de force performance from the lead actress!" insisted Sabie.

"Maybe I will get it on Netflix, I've heard it was based on an opera from the 1700s," trolled Llama.

Sabie was standing under a chandelier, which you aren't supposed to do if you are a character in a film.

Someone cut the wires to the chandelier and it plummeted toward her! At the very last second, she was pushed out of the way by an unseen hand.

No one has died. You have 48 hours to find her attacker.

It is now Day 2.

Re: [Night 1]: Film Directors.

I have responded to everyone that sent me a night action. If you sent me a night action and I have not responded, please poke me ASAP.

While you wait for the official night post, here is a word from Eisenstein:

So ladies and gents what are crazy day phase. First people voted BWT to be lynched and he ends up being a really helpful role that could help the civs out a lot if used right. Thank the flim gods for Stanley Kubrick. So now it's day 1.2 and a lot of ideas and theories were being thrown around. MP and Dom are at each other's throats which seems to be the norm now and days. The one person who stuck out the most to the majority was A Person who's self vote seemed to be opportunistic. Poor Darren Aronofsky never had a chance to show off his math skills. Lets try to get it right Day 2 everyone.
