Re: [Day 1]: Film Directors.

What was the very last film you saw?

Mine was Luis Buñuel's Tristana (based on the novel of the same name), starring the effervescent Catherine Deneuve (did anyone catch her in the recentish film Potiche? I freakin loved that).

You've probably seen his classic short film Un Chien Andalou, but have you seen L'Age d'Or? Whoamg.

Re: [Day 1]: Film Directors.

Day 1, Redux (Once More With Feeling):

"I feel like everything is a fantasy," said Vompatti.

"You wish," said A Person.

"Did you know that Frederico Fellini was a master of ethereal fantasy meets grounded reality?" said Timmer.

"What does that even mean?" asked Metalmarsh.

"Let's watch this girl dance," said Ricochet.

So they did.

"She was beautiful, and I'm sad she's dead," said Roxy.

"My teeth hurt," said Vompatti.

"If you like circus films, Fellini did La Strada," Bass helpfully offered.

"Oh, I should check out that documentary about Fellini himself," said Dom.

"Oh no, the decadence has killed A Person!" Long Con shouted.

"Is this what they meant by requiem for a dream?" asked SVS.

SAME!! My friend and I reenact that scene all the time!!!!
The nitrous scene was so so so so SO funny! I have a feeling that Bill and Kristin ad-libbed a lot of that.

My biggest regret in life is that I never have a twin brother. Logan's the closest I have to do that.

Day 1: John Huston, We Have a Problem

Image

Chances are if you've ever seen Treasure of the Sierra Madre, it changed your life. Directing his own father and Bogart to cinematic success, John Huston proved yet again that he was an impressario of the silver screen.

Try: http://historynewsnetwork.org/article/157864 to learn more about this Hollywood magnate. He directed his own daughter Anjelica to a heavily-lauded performance in The Dead.

"Wait, that's not true!" shouted BirdWithTeeth11.

"But it's right there in the textbook!" replied Made.

"I don't like this," said A Person.

Llama said something intentionally provocative. No one listened.

"Well, let's rewind the reel and hear that part again," said BirdWithTeeth.

He put his hand over the projector to stop it, but his sleeve got caught and it yanked his arm at the socket. As Birdy was bleeding to death, he wondered if Devin Townsend had ever directed anything.

BirdWithTeeth has been lynched. He was Howard Hawks.

Kubrick can "reshoot a day period" once in the game. Does that he reverses a day, annulling the lynch, or just simply that we get two day periods in a row?

The Duplass, Wachowskis and Emmerich seem to not have any powers? Is this true?

Uwe Boll - what does "lock the thread" mean, exactly?

Thanks, and items of interest to throw out there:

The Coens Bros have been picked to lead this year's Cannes jury! :fiesta:

Also, in light of Welles being in this game, his unfinished film The Other Side of the Wind, starring Peter Bogdanovich, Dennis Hopper, John Huston and featuring all kinds of filmmakers like Claude Chabrol has actually now been completed and will screen at Cannes in May on Welles' 100th birthday!!!
Kubrick's role - more annulment in scope.

True, they do not have any powers, per se.

Lock the thread, meaning no one can post for a period of time.

I was hearing about Jason Segel playing David Foster Wallace at Sundance and that was very intriguing. And also a new Duplass Bros series with 10 episodes. So stoked.

Re: [Day 1]: Film Directors.

Image

Day 1: A Piece of Cake.

There were so many directors to learn about! How would they make it through all of them? Would they discuss the use of color in films like Punch Drunk Love? What about the use of light in the 1932 version of Scarface? Or the use of sound in Dassin's Naked City? It was an almost overwhelming ordeal.

Someone walked forward into profile. A corpulent, yet dignified gentleman. He cleared his throat.

"For me, the cinema is not a slice of life, but a piece of cake," he said.

He pointed to a trunk.

"I believe in that trunk may lie a corpse of dubious origin," he said in a mid-Atlantic accent.

"Well, this got real quick," said Metalmarsh.

"No one hurt a kitty, did they?" asked A Person.

He said: "For me, the cinema is not a slice of life, but a piece of cake."

It is now Day 1. You have 48 hours to determine who put the junk in the trunk.

Re: [Day 0]: Film Directors.

I'm home from work sick again today but I have to shimmy away for the landlord to show a prospective buyer the unit.

I'll have the Day 1 post up by 6pm EST. After that, we'll be on a more regular schedule. Thank you for your patience, and for joining in on the discussion. It should be a real fun time.

Remember to poke me with any questions and to poke Epi with any concerns. Have a wonderful day.

I'm a little too loopy and headachey to match up the numbers, but it's 5 players. I'll give them another day and then post Day 1 tomorrow.

I'm staying home sick from work today.

Enjoy yourselves, and try not to trash the place.

I did it for the lulz. I mean he is a very popular director. And wears the hell out of a suit in Gone Girl, by the way.
Do you think Michael Curtiz is a good director? (Y/N)
Yes. Again, 50 spots! I had 210 in there originally. Can you imagine what it was like for me to cut... how many ever people that is from the poll?

Visceral pain.

There's a great new documentary out about Mel Brooks you might fancy called "Make a Noise" that I really loved. It spans his whole career, and gives tidbits on the making of many gems, including Young Frankenstein and The Producers. Delicious.

I don't know, atm, if I should just dive into Inherent Vice or attempt the book first.
I was not impressed by the film. It's deffo my least favorite PTA film.
timmer wrote:Going by the poll, I voted for Fellini but almost went with my homeboy Cronenberg. But really, there's just no topping Fellini, c'mon. 8 1/2? Roma? Satyricon? La Strada? God, I LOVE Fellini.
Mmm my favorite is La Strada. Gotta love a circus theme. By the way, did anyone see The Last Circus? The opening 10 minutes blew my mind into a thousand shards.

Hitchcock was a big omission -- I didn't put any of the characters I had in my game in the poll (which was an easy way to delete the poll options from 210 to 50), but I forgot I deleted him. He might pop up somewhere later k.

Vic/Ric - You are just remembering wrong, sug. My living room is Hitchcock themed. I should take pictures. He's actually my favorite director (I refer to PT Anderson as my favorite living director because I am ridiculous).
