Mafia: A World Reborn - Night 1 Post

-= The Circle Strikes =-

Timmer shivered, looking around his square. It was a bad place, and it went without saying that he shouldn't have come here at all. He could feel eyes on him everywhere he went, but he could never find anyone actually watching him. Not that he could see anyway. He thought of all the awful things that must be happening in the realm - darkness spreading, overtaking souls in despair... malevolent goblins poisoning good folk, and laughing while they choked and their skin turned blotchy and black... there were even tales of a shadow that could whisper your own deepest secrets into your ear, and use them to drive men to do things they would never consider.

When he was clubbed on the head from behind and left for dead, he was barely surprised at all.

timmer has been killed by the Circle of Decay. It is now Day 2. PMs will be sent out over the next hour or so - there's a lot of them so please be patient.

Re: Mafia: A World Reborn Game Thread - Day 1

-= Hunting Season =-

NANANANANANA_BANANA flew high in the sky, indifferent to the trials and tribulations of the many folk below in the realm. He looked down on the Infectious Goblin as he cackled, preparing a thick black liquid over a small fire. He saw a glint from the Tarnished Golem as it prepared to speed across the land, driven by a single impulse. He shuddered to see The Darkness enveloping someone, and flew higher.

"To hell with them all," he thought. "I will fly away from here forever!"

Dark Willow narrowed her eyes as she looked down at him, disapproving. With a thought, she bent the laws of physics slightly, and the sun, once so many thousands of miles away, became a shining ball of fire that actually hung in the sky. NANANANANANA_BANANA screeched as his feathers burst into flame, and he plummeted back to the ground with a bone-shattering crunch.

NANANANANANA_BANANA has been lynched. He was the Deadeye Raptor, a Civvie.

It is now Night 1. Please send in your movement PMs and your night powers as well. The sooner, the better.

Re: Mafia: A World Reborn Game Thread - Day 1

A message has been written in smoke above you in the sky:
Dear thread,
As we all know, Yin & Yang have been searching for each other their whole life. The least we can do is help them follow their destiny.

I suggest that Yin & Yang meet at E6 on Day 4. We may all enjoy the unexpected results of their encounter.

Yes, dear thread, I understand your concerns. Is this a trap? Are we all going to get killed? Why are you trying to help Yin & Yang?
All very valid questions… But the fact remains that this is the best chance Yin & Yang have of meeting.
Do with that as you please.

Greetings,
A concerned party.

Mafia: A World Reborn Game Thread - Night 0 Post

-= Discovery =-

As the sun rose after a peaceful night, weary travellers arrived at their destinations, and began to explore their new surroundings...

Day 1 has begun. You will be getting a PM about your new location (if you moved) within the next hour or so.

The poll will come up first. Those that voted for Prog will not be on the poll. One Civvie, one baddie, and one Indy role were told at the outset of the poll that this was a possible outcome of the Day 0 poll.

Re: Mafia: A World Reborn Game Thread - Roles

Metalmarsh89 wrote:Some role questions in blue.

Cataclysm - Begins the game with four subterranean pulse emitters.

What is a subterranean pulse emitter and what does it do?
Maybe you'll find out if you get a hold of one!

Chaos Wizard - The Chaos Wizard has a tower somewhere on the map, and starts on that square. Can do a variety of things from within the Tower:

- can create a Chaos Field around the tower, and anyone approaching will have their direction randomized (within one square of the Tower). Protected from ranged attacks (like kills where the killer isn’t on your square) while the Chaos Field is active
- can choose two players and switch their location, and targeted-ness that night
- can send a message to a player

If the Chaos Wizard leaves the tower, he will automatically randomize the targeting of any role within a two-square radius.

How long does the Chaos Field last?
It lasts for one phase... basically if he's in the Tower, and doesn't message anyone or switch anyone, then the field is active.

Lich of Khastor Keep - Cannot be nightkilled while his phylactery exists. Each night, the Lich may discover the location of one player. Can stop one lynch.

What is a phylactery and what does it do?
Let me tell you about Liches first. A Lich is a powerful dark wizard who has achieved a form of immortality by binding his or her soul to an object. This object is known as the Lich's phylactery. As long as the phylactery is safe, then the Lich's immortality is secure. Destroy the phylactery, and the Lich is vulnerable.

Living Statue - Cannot move until united with the Star Gem. Immune to nightkills and poison. Will know the role of each person to enter its square.

When the Star Gem is placed in the Living Statue’s chest, it gains a movement rate of 4 and no longer rolechecks. The Living Statue will join the Win Condition of the one who placed the Star Gem, gaining BTSC if it joins a baddie team.

Is the Star Gem located on the map somewhere?
Why yes... yes it is.

The Darkness - Infects one player per night with darkness, causing them to lose their win condition. The Darkness can send one message each night to those it infects, and may choose to release a player from the darkness at any time. The Darkness will know where infected players are at all times.

If the Darkness is night-targeted, the targeting will fail as though a roleblock or protection were in play. The Darkness may enter the BTSC of any square it’s on as The Darkness. Otherwise, it is undetectable.

If an infected player is targeted by the Essence Elemental, then they are cleansed of infection. If the Darkness is targeted by the Essence Elemental, it is killed! If The Darkness infects the Essence Elemental, the Essence Elemental will be killed.

The Darkness cannot acquire Items. *secrets*

Will players be informed of their lost win condition?
Do items work on the Darkness?
You will know if your Win Condition has been lost. :feb: Items can work on The Darkness.

Re: Mafia: A World Reborn Game Thread - Night 0

I have updated the Map post with this: If two or more players move to the same square, the one that sent in their movement first will arrive on the square first. If there is an Item on that square, then the first one to arrive will have the first opportunity to pick that item up. So getting your movement PM in early is generally advantageous.

Mafia: A World Reborn - Night 0

-= Exploration =-

As the sun set on the first night of the new reality, the inhabitants began to move about and explore. Each one a little confused, as though there were something they were forgetting, or something that they knew subconsciously, but couldn't make sense of it in their conscious minds. In the end, it mattered little. One's reality, as always, is the only yardstick against which to measure all else. Most shook their heads and pushed away the insane thoughts that danced on the edge of their reason.

Night 0 has begun. No powers will be in play this night, just movement. Please send in your movements by the time Day 1 starts, which will be in roughly 24 hours, maybe slightly less.

The poll will remain up until the night is over.

Re: Mafia: A World Reborn Game Thread - Day 0

-= Reborn =-

"What have you done?" The angelic creature's otherworldly voice resonated, as always, to the limits of eternity and the deepest reaches of the soul. His luminescent blue eyes gazed down upon the newly-crafted reality with mild astonishment, which gave Dark Willow a sliver of self-satisfaction.

"I've been working on it secretly," smirked Willow. "What good is being a goddess if I have no realm to worship me?" She looked down upon the world. "Look at them all, actual souls, existing for my amusement..."

Long Con spread his twin sets of wings in a glorious display. "You still have much to learn, godling," he spoke sternly. "There are limits that we must choose to abide by, or the consequences could be dire." He looked closer at the new realm. "I can see so many vestiges of your former existence here. You have not truly let go of it, despite your claims."

"So what?" she retorted hotly. "If I want to resurrect old memories as new playthings, who is to say I cannot? It amuses me to see these pathetic beings, struggling to comprehend why they dream of another life while they sleep at night, battling each other for petty moral victories."

Another god, attracted by the new reality that had formed, took interest and gazed upon it judgementally. A strange being of only two dimensions, always seeming to be a series of moving pictures, he frowned. "The balance is off. What's the point, I can see how this will end already. This is amateur hour in the Blind Eternities!"

"What do I care what you think, flat one?" Willow's eyes flared with a dark light. "Mind your business, and do not try and influence what I have wrought here!" MovingPictures glared at her but fell silent, easing back, but staying to observe.

"Very well," intoned Long Con. "Play in your little playground. Let us make it interesting, what say you?"

"I'm listening," said Dark Willow, secretly pleased that he had allowed her experiment to continue.

"If the side of goodness is victorious, then you will submit to My superiority and judgement for the next ten millennia."

Dark Willow held out her hands. "And if evil wins, then you will hand over a new realm to me, one of your creation... one that you hold dear."

Long Con considered. "I have many great realms that have existed for eons. This wager is acceptable to Me."

A new god appeared, a many-tentacled thing, gleaming white and hideous. "I have heard this wager, and I will moderate this reality, to ensure that neither of you influence the outcome! The entire pantheon watches and judges you both, with great interest."

"Thank you, nijuukyugou, Devourer of Infinity. This shall be, at the very least, an entertaining lesson for an upstart godling. "

"If I win," growled Dark Willow, "You will stop calling me that."

Day 0 has begun, and will last until most or all have checked in.

Mafia: A World Reborn Game Thread - The Map

Image

This is the Map. Throughout the game, you will always have a Map location for your role. Each Night, you will send in your movement to a new square, and the movement will take place as the new Day begins.

A Map square may contain an Item, a Location, another player, or nothing at all. If you share a Map square with another player, then you will have temporary BTSC with that player until your next movement, or until one of you leaves the square.

Basic movement, unless specifically defined by your role, is a movement rate of three. What this means is that when the Night ends, you will have the opportunity to travel three squares in any direction. In this example, the player is on square E5, and therefore has the opportunity to travel to the following squares for the next phase: E2, D3, E3, F3, C4, D4, E4, F4, G4, B5, C5, D5, E5, F5, G5, H5, C6, D6, E6, F6, G6, D7, E7, F7, E8.

Baddie Team kills have a range of 2. Only those who are within two squares of a member of the killing baddie team may be targeted with a nightkill by that team. This graphic shows an example of a kill range on any given night for a baddie team.

When a member of the baddie team dies, each remaining member's kill range increases by one. When two baddies from the same team are on the same square, their kill range is increased by one.

If you do not send in a movement by the time the Night ends, then you will remain on the same square. Movement will begin on Night 0, and everyone will be informed of their starting square before then.

If two or more players move to the same square, the one that sent in their movement first will arrive on the square first. If there is an Item on that square, then the first one to arrive will have the first opportunity to pick that item up. So getting your movement PM in early is generally advantageous.

Mafia: A World Reborn Game Thread - Roles

Image
Beautiful Beast - Can kill someone from one square away if that player is alone. If the Beautiful Beast targets someone who has the Mirror of Truth, that person will not die. Instead, the Beautiful Beast will become Civvie-aligned, and can kill someone within two squares every other night as the Civvie Ninja. Otherwise, the Beautiful Beast must be the Last Man Standing. *secrets*

Image
Blinkman - Can teleport to any square each movement. Can remove himself from the lynch poll twice in the game.

Image
Cataclysm - Begins the game with four subterranean pulse emitters.

Image

Image
Cursecrafter - Can create items to leave on a location that seem to have a minor positive effect, but may hide a greater negative one.

Image
Deadeye Raptor - High movement rate of 5. Moves by flying high into the air, looking at all possible squares, and then choosing one.

Image
Dr Von Dreszenstein - Sends out his dogs each night from his square to search for experiment subjects or dead bodies. He will know who is within three squares, and choose one of those players to experiment on. *secrets*

Image
Essence Elemental - Chooses a person who they have had BTSC with. If that person dies, they will be resurrected upon the Elemental’s death, and the Essence Elemental will win if the target wins. The Essence Elemental will retain BTSC with their chosen player after death.

Chooses one player each night to bathe with cleansing energy. This will cure poison, expose curses, and free them from The Darkness’ clutches. If the Essence Elemental targets The Darkness, The Darkness will be destroyed.

Image
Feral Pixie - Leaves a message to be found in a square after she leaves the square. The Feral Pixie may not return to that square for the remainder of the game. She can only be seen by targeters on the same square.

Image
Gladius Mechaspark - His battery pack can power one of his inventions each night. Has a shield generator that can protect a square from outside forces for the night. Has a flying machine that can emulate the Deadeye Raptor’s movement rate. Has a locator device that can tell him where an item is. Has a Null Ray that nullifies a player’s powers for the phase, rendering them vanilla. If he’s alive by Night 6, he may invent a new item. An invention must recharge for two phases before being reused.

Image
Grim Shaman - Can use the powers of dead players, one-time use. *secrets*

Image
Infectious Goblin - Targets a player to poison each night. Players who are poisoned get votes for them multiplied by their poison counters. Poison counters increase each night. Can poison an Item and leave it in a square for a player to find.

Image
John Locke - Can tell who was in the square he’s in, when they were there, and what direction they went in. May discover other information.

Image
Karma Chameleon - Can imitate the role of people he’s had BTSC with, once. Can choose whether or not to reveal himself, but cannot imitate without revealing himself and having BTSC. If he doesn’t reveal himself, cannot be night targeted. Must inform the hosts what he plans on doing before the Day is over.

Image
Lich of Khastor Keep - Cannot be nightkilled while his phylactery exists. Each night, the Lich may discover the location of one player. Can stop one lynch.

Image
Living Statue - Cannot move until united with the Star Gem. Immune to nightkills and poison. Will know the role of each person to enter its square.

When the Star Gem is placed in the Living Statue’s chest, it gains a movement rate of 4 and no longer rolechecks. The Living Statue will join the Win Condition of the one who placed the Star Gem, gaining BTSC if it joins a baddie team.

Image
Master Thief - Can steal an item from a player within a two-square radius. If the player does not have an item then he gets to steal knowledge of their role.

Image
Mystic Surveyor - Can find out information about three squares per night. Can stop the lynch twice, once for himself and once for someone else.

Image
Possessing Entity - *secrets*

Image
Psionic Ninja - Lie Detector role. Can evade first nightkill attempt on him. Movement rate of 4. *secrets*

Image
Puppet Master - Can control the night powers of another player in close proximity.

Image
Quantum Key - Tapped into the secrets of the game, the Quantum Key will help to reveal the unknown.

Image
Scrippleskitz - Starts out each lynch with -3 votes. *secrets*

Image
Soul Shade - Influences one player each night. *secrets*

Image
Splinter Twin - In addition to moving, Splinter Twin can choose to send his holographic self out two squares. He will enter BTSC with people on the same square as his holographic self, and only his physical form can suffer from targeted effects. His physical form can only been seen from one square away by ranged targeters.

Image
Tarnished Golem - Chooses a player to watch over before Night Two. Can kill every other night, but only someone who has voted for the player they are watching over. The Tarnished Golem moves frighteningly quickly, with a movement rate of 6. The Tarnished Golem will travel even faster when it kills, moving to the square of its target. If the target survives, the Golem will not gain BTSC during that phase.

The Tarnished Golem wins when its watched-over player wins. If its watched-over player dies, the Tarnished Golem may kill every other night, any target, and wins only by killing the ones it holds responsible, and surviving until the end. Immune to poison.

Image

*secrets*

Image
Trickster - The Trickster can appear as any role to a role check, even after death. Can appear as any player in temp BTSC. The Trickster may leave a message behind in a square twice in the game, and may cast an illusion once in the game, causing a lynched person to seem as though they were the role of his choice.

Yang - If Yang enters the same square as Yin, unexpected results may occur!

Mafia: A World Reborn Game Thread - Rules

Game Dynamics

The game begins with 15 Civvies, 8 baddies, and 7 Independent roles. There are two baddie teams, the Circle of Decay, and the Witherdeath Cabal. The Circle of Decay has the opportunity to kill on odd nights, and the Witherdeath Cabal may kill on even nights.

The Civvies must eliminate both baddie teams to win. Civvies who are not alive at the game's end will not be able to claim this particular Win Condition.

Each baddie team of 4 must eliminate the other baddies, and have sufficient control of the game to ensure that no other faction can win, in order to achieve their Win Condition. Normally, this will occur when their team outnumbers the living Civvies.

Independent roles have their own unique Win Condition, which may evolve during the game.

There are Win Conditions for individuals that may be achieved during the game, separate from these Main Win Conditions. These Quest Win Conditions are quite rare.

Rules

1. No illegal BTSC. This means communicating outside designated areas without permission, or communicating with players with whom you do not have host-allowed BTSC. If you need to communicate outside designated areas then you may ask the hosts for permission. Violators will be mod-killed without prejudice.

2. Dead players may not speak on-topic in the thread. Don't toe this line.

3. All official PM's need to be sent to both hosts. We both need to know what is going on as we are working around our work schedules and our own business. If you don't follow this rule and your PM gets missed that's your fault.

4. Keep it real. It's a game, check your emotions. Don't get personal. If someone else is upsetting you with the way they are acting, contact the Mod On Duty instead of taking down the general mood of the thread.

5. You may not discuss in-thread who you have had BTSC with, or discuss openly or in detail what was said in BTSC.

6. You may not discuss specific map coordinates in-thread, but you may generally speak of map locations.

7. No reproducing the host PMs in thread.

8. Your P-score will be affected negatively if your hosts decide that you are not participating enough. You will be warned if you are approaching that consequence, and there will be as many chances as you deserve in order to avoid it.

Days will last 48 hours, and Nights will last 24 hours, generally. Due to Host schedules, these times may be altered in order to make running the game doable. Mostly, we will adjust the Night times in order to aim for between 10pm and midnight, EST, for phase transitions. Some Nights, for instance, may be 21 or 22 hours instead of the full 24, for convenience. You will always be fully informed of the length of a phase.

Questions
This section will be updated as questions for the Hosts are asked.
