I seem to remember being suspected by someone for what I did in 17 minutes once. That might have been LC in Bullets Over Broadway?

I was good (well, technically I was neutral if it is that game, but I remember being in the mindset of helping town). LC was bad.

Re: [Day 1] GY!BE Mafia

OK, so I may not get back before deadline, so I may as well put my thoughts on scotty out there.

I do not believe scotty didn't look at his PM. It's possible he just said he didn't for playful fun, but his tone is not one of playful fun. But Scotty takes his team duty seriously and wouldn't not check in my opinion.

Add to that, I have a tonal issue with scotty. Trice just described him as 'arrogant', but no, this is not normal scotty. The scotty I'm used to is a town force who maintains a certain level of 'tipping his hat' to everyone else. Arrogance is not something I associate with him in the slightest.

What's more, from my perspective, Scotty has a habit of getting himself into early trouble when bad. I don't agree with whoever said he is a 'bullseye', because I don't think scotty gets lynched early very often. But I can recall twice he got himself into early trouble - red vs blue and Lost Again season 1. In each of these games my perception is that he was playing a pretty decent game (and trying to replicate town scotty) but got himself caught up in contradictions.

The Scotty I see at the start of this game is not a scotty I've seen before. But Scotty has no need to mix up a town game that serves him well. On the other hand, he seems to get caught early as a baddie. My impression is that this 'distant' scotty (my read of what Trice is seeing as slightly arrogant, I think) is his attempt to mix up his baddie game and not get caught.

Add to that, he's getting caught in contradictions again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Having said all of that about scotty, my vote for inh was more than a 'no u'. I do apologise for my mini meltdown, but to me there is only so many times that you can criticise everyone else for 'not creating meaningful content' while doing nothing yourself.
Jay pointed out that inh 'described mafia' when criticising what others were doing. I agree.
He does things like call out the sig votes as having 'no thread basis' despite criticising the things people are trying to do to establish a thread basis for their votes.
I see it being very plausible that inh is bad and someone... probably not sig... is taking heat for what inh considers to be bullsuit reasons.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I'm genuinely torn between which to vote for. Scotty is generally the one of these two I find easiest to read long term, and I do feel as though he has lacked opportunity to contribute so far. On the other hand, he seems like the much more likely place to get some sort of vague consensus, which means my vote has a higher chance of relevance.

On the other hand, I find inh potentially much more insidious as I do not really know if he ever creates content, and so I don't know what I would hang him on later if he is bad. I also feel as though inh flipping bad would tell us more than scotty would, because I get the sense inh is old school and that defending teammates by implication on day one is definitely something he would do. But he is much less likely to be lynched.

So, with that dilemma in mind....

I'm going to leave my vote on inh, because I have more conviction about him, and if I happen to get some time in the morning I'll revisit it then.

I'll add that this does not match my only memorable experience of BWT being bad - subbing in to economics for him. He feels quite different to me here than what he did there, and I think it about his breadth, although it's hard to put a finger on in words.

I won't be voting for bwt or sig today, so of those three people who are so called 'bullseyes', Scotty is the only one I'm interested in (and also, the only one who I disagree with the assessment that he is a bullseye, but maybe that's happened more recently while I've been around less).

What do you think of inh jumping on your understanding as gospel, though?

I can understand why you would be worried about me suspecting you, and read it that way, but surely for anyone else they would at least see that there was another way to take my post.

I just can't tell if inh was being genuine in his choice to treat your words as the true interpretation of my post, or if he just wanted to take another dig at me. Despite the fact I've made it clear I'm not using PoE this game and think it has fundamental flaws in a secret-laden setup.

FWIW, I don't think the case on Scotty is in the slightest semantic. His contributions are nothing like town Scotty. They do actually remind me of red v blue. It's still a day one case, but the day one case there was correct.

I also don't believe Scotty didn't read his PM before he started posting.

Nothing is a 'trivial thing for me to bother with'. Minutiae can be where you catch people sometimes. The first time around, I read it as simply a treatise on MPs use of PoE, and I believed him when he affirmed that later. But there is no guarantees he wouldn't flounder around in self-justification for a town LoRab read if I had understood his mindset wrong.

I'll also just note I DID dismiss the notion first. But then I revisited it with fresh eyes. And then I dismissed it again. And I'm totally ok with that :slick:

I'm going about this game the wrong way if I presume my perspective, and not Dom's, is the correct one without even thinking of testing it.
My expectation stems from what I perceive to be a history of you turning away "scumslip" type assertions, a mindset I think you and I often share. I don't fault you though for engaging in a test or feel that it wasn't a test, and you haven't pressed the issue so I'll move on.
In Turf Wars, I got turned away by others on a genuine scumslip from ika when I should have known better.

I tend to think I'm good at seeing within the mindset of whether or not something is a turn of phrase or an accidental information drop. I do think the latter does happen from time to time. I know it does, in fact, because I did it myself in Gentleman's Guide.

I just think it happens much more rarely than people get accused of it. That doesn't mean it should not be questioned to come to an informed opinion.

This.

Which I associate with her civ game but she made only after I voted for her in that game. Before that post, she had really done very little of substance in that game that even demonstrated she was reading the thread.

But I don't see her trying to fabricate one here just to get town reads. Her 'catch up' posts look more genuine, to me, that she actually is reading the thread but isn't trying to create a particular perspective of herself.

I agree with your boomslang read, MP.

I'm not understanding your read on Jay, though. I don't really see him throwing out 'questions that need to be asked'. I see him trying to undermine people who have expressed shady reads of him, and not much more.

The question Jay asked of me was in essence the same question MP asked of me, but with less neutrality and more of an angle about his perception of how I should act (and so, painting my behaviour in a negative light). MP, without agenda, just asked me to explain my mindset. Completely different.

I don't trust Jay at all.

That said...and this is probably a stupid question (and I'll probably get flack for it, but whatever). But, uh, are we supposed to be doing anything? There's no poll, but is there any sort of day 0 exercise that I missed? Do we know how we get to day 1 (or night 1, depending on which comes first)?
Hunting for mafia fellow townies. That's what we're supposed to be doing. :srsnod:

But seriously, no Day 0 poll or anything, just check in time... I believe.
How do other people feel about that line?
I don't feel great about it.
Why not? If anything, I'd call it one of the most town-leaning lines MP has written in this game, so I'm interested in your perspective.
The second one was my figuring out Dom's point and so reframing his point in a way that makes more sense to me, as a poke. Your response to my question reinforced the way I read it from you in the first place.

Ultimately, my own thoughts on Dom went from 'suspicious' to 'oh, I can actually understand Dom's mindset here'. So, I don't particular find Dom suspicious for it. I do, however, believe your own account of why you said 'fellow civvies'.

Golden, are you planning on elaborating on this anytime soon?
No. Not until at least some time towards the middle of day one. I want to let things play out a bit first.

I mean, with my read on you its gut. I wouldn't say I'm great at reading you, but your posts exude what I feel is townieness from you. It's scotty that I'm not elaborating on.

I did so check in!! I was the first to post!!!!! I just haven't had anything to add since then.

I have no conclusion, other than to say that I have not yet concluded that I have a town read on you, which I often do by this point. I don't think that makes the dabs and pokes devoid of worth, though.

I also found it responsive in the moment. MP asked 'why now', and Jay did have an answer, but I wasn't entirely convinced.

On the flip side, it's almost TOO transparent for Jay to go 'shit, golden put me on low heat, I better put some reads out then'. He can't have expected it would go by without being called out. So in some ways, it made me feel a little better about him.

Hang on. Are you just claiming to be 'bad' like how one would in the 80s? You wouldn't know if you hadn't read your role...
This logic puzzle you seem to be trying to solve is missing a few pieces.

I sure hope when I check my role you aren't my baddie partner. For both our sakes :grin:

triceratopzeuhl wrote:So if I understand you correctly, instead of picking somebody who reads as bad to lynch, you make a list of everybody who reads as good and choose from the others to lynch? Does that, er, ever actually work? Have you used this approach successfully before?
Nice to meet you, trice!

It's my fault the concept is looked down upon, because I first used it to describe why I didn't regret lynching somebody who turned out to be town, but looked bad. In any other world, people wouldn't have been as mad as me because the reason he looked bad was all the normal reasons - but what got people's back up is I said that it was a necessary lynch because if we didn't, we'd just be arguing about him the next day and the next day. It was sad that he was civ, but I felt the lynch was still the right move to solve the game. (Also, worth noting - civs could win dead in that game, so I didn't cost the person their shot at winning).

A big difference in the approach is what you do to the 'people in the middle'. Because often, they can sneak by without doing anything and they never take any heat, and then they turn out to be bad and win.

The idea is, instead, put pressure on those people to try to figure out that they are town or bad instead of letting them float.

In the game where I got in trouble, the mafia did include a floater or two, so it was helpful to use the approach.

It's really not very different from how we do mafia normally, though. It's essentially the same, just with more emphasis on sharing your town reads, and more willingness to listen to each other when your reads differ and try and figure out (together) who is right.

Re: [Day 0] GY!BE Mafia

A qualifier - I don't know if it's because of what sloonei points out, but I independently felt in the PoE discussion, inh MP (and I) were all having a genuine discussion, and you almost were putting an oar in out of obligation because you know you are linked to the use of PoE in some peoples eyes. It's almost like you didn't want to contribute to the discussion but you did anyway. That's how it came across to me.

I don't know that I buy a link between trying not to create too much content, and actually not creating much content within the posts you do make, Jay.

It's possible not to post a lot but make content. My hot takes post, eg.

Re: [Day 0] GY!BE Mafia

I will admit that I think JJ suffers from the same affliction I do - that sometimes people who don't know him well perceive him as arrogant - and that this comes from projecting an air of firmness and certainty in opinions even when it is just an opinion.

I can't recall seeing a 'less sure' JJ, either, and I'd need more than 'this is different' to see it as bad.

Can anyone remember what games Jay was bad in? I have baby brain.

I've read about 1% of the thread so far. I've been either at work or asleep since this game started, but that's done now. I'll have things to say soonish.
There are 192 posts. You've written 10 of them. By my calculations, that means you haven't read 8 of your own posts so far.

I don't blame you though. I don't want to read my own posts either. I don't even know what I just typed.
I'm just hitting random keys and hoping I make sense.

Sloonei has a natural sixth sense about bringing order into random chaos that you lack.

Nice way to hit caps lock, though.
