The pre-dawn air was brisk but it made everyone assembling feel alive. When Yuri forced them all to strip so he could search them for bugs, the air became a little more life-taking than life-inducing. Satisfied that everyone was clean, Yuri handed backpacks and rations for the trek.
The presence of an extra pack told the group that one of them was missing. They looked around, trying to discern which of them was running late on the most important day of his or her life.
"Viktor," someone said. "Where is Viktor?"
"He's got five minutes to get his ass here or we take off without him," Chelsea growled. "Who was he partnered with?"
"With me," someone answered.
"Well, podrooga," Sidney said, "you can play third wheel with Chelsea and I if Viktor doesn't show."
Viktor never showed. As the minutes passed, fear trickled through some of their tired minds. Had Viktor just chickened out or had be betrayed them? Which option was worse?
"Come now," Yuri said. "You all have a train to catch."
Yuri stepped out of the shadows and approached the conductor, who was doing his final inspection. They embraced and Yuri handed him something that swiftly found its way into the conductor's pocket. After a minute of conversation, Yuri walked back to the group.
"There is room for you in the eighth car back. My friend tells me that government inspectors typically check the first five cars, the last five cars and two or three in the middle to save them time and paperwork. You should be safe in the eighth car back."
Chelsea led the group back to their home for the next 15 hours. Sidney held back to say a few words to Yuri.
"Thank you again for helping us," Sidney said.
"Thank you and your associates for helping me move these people with you. Their stories are important."
"Indeed they are."
The two shook hands. Sidney pulled away to head back the train, but Yuri pulled him in close for an embrace.
"Trust no one," he whispered in Sidney's ear.
"I never have," Sidney said with a grin. "I don't plan to start now."
