Zenon was a bad first date, and it was my fault.

Zenon was the one I drove over two hours to meet. At the time I lived in a rural enough area that sometimes you had to reach out longer distances to even have a chance, but that was still too much. She was extremely attractive though, so good luck convincing my brain then that it wasn't worth the time or effort. And truly, the date itself wasn't necessarily "bad". We had a nice time. We walked around a town I hadn't visited before, wandered through a museum, and checked out some unique local shops. I genuinely enjoyed that, and I think she did too. But it was still a "bad date" because it was a "date" at all. She was the first to acknowledge that elephant in the room and say something like "So we clearly can't date, right? This is way too far away." I shook my fist ruefully at the institution of geography, but she was of course correct. We still maintain a measure of contact though, as pen pals of a sort. She's good people, and I hope she is well.

pyxxy was a bad first date, and it was my fault.

pyxxy was the gorgeous graduate student at a neighboring college. Before I visited her town for our first date, she and I had held a literal six-hour phone call into the wee hours of night/morning, and I foolishly allowed that to drown me in visions of what could be. It has always been rare for me to receive that kind of attention, and when it happened I proved that I wasn't prepared for it. When we met and spent a few hours walking, eating, and talking, I was just far too forward. I treated the mutual nature of our interest as a foregone conclusion "because we had a six hour phone call in the middle of the night!!!", and I was just not correct about that. I hit the gas when I should have eased on the brakes, and she did not respond positively to that.

DrWilgy was the kittenfisher. She wasn't quite a full-on catfisher, but she came close. Her photographs on the dating app were at least a decade old, and she basically looked like a different person entirely. When I met her in person, I had to double-take and work through some mental calculus to convince myself that this was the person I had come to meet. I would not disparage anyone for the way that they look. It generally cannot be helped. But the dishonesty was absolute, and I was deeply disappointed to be put in that position. I liked her a lot in our previous communication, or at the "her" she portrayed herself to be. I even had to reject a kiss at the end of it. It was such a weird experience.

Yeah. The whole date was a mess. She also looked nothing like her photographs (not quite as egregiously so as the previous date), and I had to endure about two hours of fake pleasantness knowing that I wasn't going to want to pursue another date. Then when I dropped her off at the end of the evening, she decided to ahead and let me know that in the recent past, she had been wanted by the police on child endangerment charges. She didn't even say she had children until that moment. I seriously almost laughed out of pure instinct. I am very glad I didn't do that, but it's easily the most absurd moment in my dating history.

Kate was a first date that doesn't quite qualify as a "date", but the memory is horrid to me anyway and it probably helps to set the table for the bad dates that followed later in life. I was in the eighth grade, and I was attending a middle school dance. I was a bumbling idiot of colossal social ineptitude, but I had managed to squeak out a dance request with My Big Crush anyway. I don't remember how I managed that; it seemed impossible then. Maybe someone else asked on my behalf? Anyway, there I was with bae on the dance floor doing that awkward faint sway to-and-fro that 12-13 year olds tend to do at dances. She had a warm smile and likely a healthy dose of sympathy, but I gulped away my nerves and tried to appreciate the moment. Then, when I was least prepared for anything resembling a prank, my "friend" snuck up behind me and punched me right in the ass as hard as he could. He ran away cackling while I doubled over in shock.

Unfortunately, I gave chase. I was outraged. I wanted to see him suffer. But that meant I just left her there. Bewildered. I am not even certain she saw what he did. Either way, I blundered away a young teenager's moment of glory in blind fury, and I hardly said a word to her ever again. Anyone could fairly assess this "bad date" to be my friend's fault more than mine, but I shared in the blame. I just left her there. That single memory, perhaps more than any other from an extremely awkward and ill-adjusted childhood, makes me wince.

falcon was the first date that I didn't even realize was a date. I was the manager of a pizza restaurant chain local to the area, and the manager of the nearest neighbor store in the chain asked me out to donuts. At that stage of my life, nobody had ever asked me out on a date before, and I had no concept of the idea that it was something that could happen. So I believed this poor girl literally just wanted to get donuts and involved me in the process for no reason. I'm not sure what I thought? But I didn't dress in a date-like way, and I didn't behave in a date-like way. I wasn't mean or anything like that, but I cannot imagine I treated the event in the way that she had envisioned. It wouldn't have worked out anyway, as I wasn't really into her. But I wish I could have at least been less of a clueless moron about what was happening.

Epignosis was the first person I asked out when I arrived at a new home in Ohio after the I finished my time in the military. I still had a mind for fitness and action, and she had spoken of her affinity for the local hill hikes. So we hiked. I sorely underestimated the strenuousness of the hike and overestimated the firmness of the dirt under my feet. I wore ordinary shoes, a t-shirt, and shorts with nothing else on my person save maybe a bottled water in my pocket. She had a whole-ass backpack, hiking boots, a stick, and various other "we're fucking hiking, bitch" gear. I could tell immediately when she got a look at me that 1) this would not go well, and 2) she felt the same way. But we trudged on anyway, and I barely managed to maintain any kind of conversation amid my heavy breathing and slow progress through the mud. I think I might have ruined my shoes in the woods.

Seanzie was the dating application match who made it clear that she really really loved dogs. I should have done a better job of asking more specific questions about that, because I was unprepared when I got in her car and the smell made me visibly and audibly gag, almost certainly within her notice. One could argue that this was a "her fault" situation, but I really should have paid more attention to certain available signals that something like this was coming. I don't handle strong odors well, either from the standpoint of hiding my disgust or more severely preventing allergic responses. I don't even have a dog allergy, but I might have a stank allergy.

Okay, context is important even if I'd have more fun leaving it at that. I used to live in a town with a prominent hillside landmark: an abandoned mental asylum from the early 20th century. It looms ominously like a classical haunted mansion from a cartoon, and it makes for a popular destination for folks that want to walk their dogs. QTπ had a dog, and when I suggested we take a walk, she suggested bringing the doggo. I was happy, as the doggo would provide an immediate reduction in the inherent awkwardness of a mobile date. But then we spent 90% of the walk sitting on a bench surrounded by unmarked asylum gravestones saying very few words to each other.

The dog had a great time.

Cape90 was was another member of the graduate program that I had met a few times at board game nights hosted by mutual friends. She was cute, and I was feeling bold, so I asked her out. She was bashful in response, but still agreed. We got lunch a few days later. I don't really remember much about that lunch; I think I blacked out. It's all blank to me. All I can remember is that somehow, at some point in our awkward chatter, I found myself talking about something dramatically un-date-like.

tutuu was a nice girl that suggested we take walk through a local state park. She was a rare case in which she looked even better than the photos on the dating app suggested she might. I had had a very long week, including a lot of graduate school work and a couple other dates as well. My brain was a scramble, but I still tried to keep my enthusiasm elevated so that it could be engaging and minimally awkward for her. I arrived first, and soon after she pulled up in her own car. I waved excitedly and said "hey Sarah!"

Her name was Samantha. Sarah was a previous date. I mixed the names up in a momentary miserable blunder. She corrected me immediately, and then we spent 90 minutes walking around trying to pretend that didn't happen. Miraculously, there was a second date here... but not a third.
