Why is that?

It's inherent to the structure. A team can put together a very impressive resume over a 162 game marathon of a regular season, and then have just 3 off games in the first round and it's all over. It seems to happen every year to at least one team, while a lesser team gets hot late in the season or in the playoffs and wins the whole thing. ERA is hardly even useful at the end of the season. Most of baseball's most well-known statistics are close to useless, especially when it comes to pitching.
