Names like the Chiefs/Braves/Blackhawks do not bother me because they’re respectful, tasteful, celebrations of positive aspects of Native American iconography (if not also culture. Idk what the relationship is like between any of these franchises and the local Native American communities). “Redskins” is at best a distasteful informal term of mild mockery. At worst, it’s... much worse than that.
The Cleveland Indians are the real tricky one to me, and they’re apparently moving toward a name change as well. “Indian”, while a pretty ludicrous name for these particular people etymologically speaking, is not necessarily divisive today. But the franchise’s depiction and implementation of the imagery has historically been not-good, and the name as a sort of blunt and vague descriptor isn’t really drawing any positive inspiration from the source.

Re: All Things NFL
Titans/Ravens is the only pick I would have got wrong this week, but I think we're all in that boat.
Henry is a machine. He goes against everything that the modern NFL is supposed to be, but he's unstoppable right now. I can see Tennessee winning the Super Bowl on his shoulders. I'll be rooting for the FIghtin' Vrabels.

Re: All Things NFL
It’s not over unless Brady decides to leave this year. He’s still good and the struggles are not on him. Not directly, at least.
I can’t see them beating Baltimore in Baltimore this year. I can see then beating KC though. They were the better team in the second half of their regular season matchup there.
At this point I just want to see a Brady/Brees or Brady/Rodgers Super Bowl. It’s ridiculous that we haven’t had either of those matchups yet with how long all three of them have been at the top of the game. But it won’t be this year. It’ll be Baltimore vs. whoever comes out of the NFC.
This week’s winners:
Bills
Pats
Saints
Seahawks

Re: All Things NFL
They were cruising toward 4 straight games without allowing a touchdown, then a muffed punt and a pick six by the rookie backup QB in garbage time changed that.
The defense is still pitching a TD shutout though.

Re: All Things NFL
but for real, philadelphia was the best all around opponent I've seen match up against the Pats since Seattle in the Super Bowl a few years ago. That was an entertaining football game and the Patriots' obvious holes on defense finally caught up to them. Nick Foles played better than a backup is supposed to play on that stage, but he also never really faced any pressure.
That one timeout the Pats burned early in the 4th came back to bite them. The game could have turned out different if they'd had all three going into the final minutes. But that was a product of Philly's offense being effective and difficult to stop all game long, so no sour grapes over it. Either team could have won that game, and there's no shame in being on the losing end of it.
see y'all again next year. I wonder who the opponent will be this time. Kinda hoping it's New Orleans. A Brady/Brees Super Bowl match up with both of them in their twilight years would be awesome.

I only watched the first half, but it seemed very much like a defensive meltdown on Minnesota's part, and the offense couldn't keep up.

Re: All Things NFL
I talk a lot of shit about the NFL. I do dislike the league itself greatly for a number of reasons. But I can't pretend for a second that I don't have an emotional investment in the success of this team. I was 9 when Tom Brady burst onto the scene. The Tuck Rule game is one of my most vivid sports memories, and I've been closely following Brady's career and this team ever since then. The last few years it has become increasingly apparent that I am watching an all time great, if not THE all time great at the game and there's no way I can't not appreciate that. I grew up with the foundation of that legacy and now I'm continuing to enjoy it as a (sort of) adult. Football is a really cool game and I'm glad I've been able to watch the Patriots win 5 Super Bowls and counting. The NFL just sucks.
Sorry, everyone else. I know this is the opposite of what everyone else wants.

But Jimmy Garappolo! I unfortunately think Belichick is more responsible for this sustained greatness than Brady. Brady is just the perfect person to win within his system. I'd expect them to remain very good after Brady is gone.G-Man wrote:I've been a Miami Dolphins fan since I was about five years old. Dan Marino was one of my childhood heroes. The Dolphins have had only limited success since Marino retired. Part of that is management ineptitude and part of it is due to the sustained success of the Patriots. It's a division rivalry thing mostly, though I did think Brady was too cocky for my taste when he shot to stardom. I look forward to New England becoming average again when Brady retires, because it means parity may finally return to the AFC East.Golden wrote:Most comforting.G-Man wrote:You Patriots fans are as welcome with me come Super Bowl Sunday as Republicans are welcome with Dom and DH in the Politics thread. Why did the NFL change the touchback rule? I don't get it. I mean, fine, sure, put the ball at the 25, whatever. But what's the rationale behind that decision? Did they just feel like doing it?
