Thunderclouds rolled in fast from seemingly everywhere. Earthquakes seemed to upend the pitches in the separate facilities. Coach Scotty sounded the alarm on his boombox. No one questioned where he got a boombox or how long it had been sitting there on the sidelines.
“Listen up!” He shouted at the top of his lungs- this was wholly unnecessary, as everyone was dead quiet after the deafening alarm from his boombox. Scotty began again. “I read about this in a fortune cookie last night from the Chinese joint down the street. It said ‘A great upheaval will occur!’ I know this is exactly what it was referring to!”
SVS ran in from the other facility. “That’s right. Aren’t you precious. In other news, and more practically,” she began. But was cut off as the structure began to tear apart with thick cracks in the ground. “More practically, we need to get the hell out of here and back to the main facility. You’ve all made it to the next round.”
She blew the whistle, and everyone high-tailed it over fault lines and evaded falling debris.

Coach Scotty donned a glossy purple lab coat with dinosaurs and plants today on the bus, to which someone snarked, “Is he cosplaying that teacher from the Magic Schoolbus?” He heard this and responded, “Truth be told, I intended to fit in with the training facility, which today,” he smiled, “I hear is a jungle. Or, at least, that’s what the brochure said. It didn’t say too much so I’m just filling in the blanks.”
And blanks there were. Already multiple players were dying off. As was tradition.
Coach SVS, looking out the window at the omnipresent jungle canopy, spotted an encroaching tunnel carved into the mountain. Getting to her feet, she announced, “Okay team, it’s important we all hold our breath going into this tunnel, and keep it held in as long as possible. The training demands it today.”
Someone questioned “Why?” but there was no response from the coaches. And as the tunnel came upon the bus, everyone sucked in their breath as the bus was plunged into darkness for a bit.
For this day only, every player gains a ‘breath.’ This breath may be given to another player willingly some time before end of day. Please do so privately in your personal discord channel if you wish to give it away. Going into the night, collecting a certain number of breaths can give you a benefit:
-Two breaths (First Heightening) will give you awareness as to who gave away their breath during the night.
-Three breaths (Second Heightening) will allow protection from death during the ensuing night (if you don’t have a killing power)
-Three breaths (Second Heightening) will allow you to janitor the kill in the ensuing night (if you do have killing power)
-Five or more breaths (Third Heightening) will give you a cool sword

When the team showed up to their facility, a new notice, printed on a boldly-colored multicolor slab, was posted on the bulletin board.
Upon closer inspection, it was just titled 'EAST FACILITY' and listed names and corresponding checkboxes beneath it. When Coach Scotty arrived to open up the equipment lockers, someone asked him what the purpose of the list was, and Scotty shrugged. "Dunno. Never seen that before in my life. Also I can't read."

Coach Scotty was a fast walker, and the small group of athletic hopefuls had trouble keeping pace as he careened down the trail towards the West Facility.
After roughly 20 minutes of walking through rivers, across a highway, and even stopping for a pit stop at a gas station so Scotty could grab a can of baked beans, the team finally arrived at the West Facility..if they could even call it a facility.
It was more of an encampment, really. The “building” was comprised of various large, open-air tent structures, and a large tennis court in the center.
Scotty, sweaty and spoon-feeding himself beans from the can, pursed his lips and whistled to himself. He turned to his charges and addressed them as if he were motivating a Grecian army into battle.
“The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here,” he began, summoning his best Lincoln. “But we have not begun…not yet anyway. But when we do begin, we will finish- finish the season. And win. Probably. Maybe?” He dropped his can of beans absent-mindedly.
“Eh, you get the point. We’re gonna practice, and practice, and some of you may die in the process; many do under my coaching. It’s not a flaw, goddamn it! It’s a character-building feature! And it’s a reason we’re gonna win it all this year.”
The group looked less than confident. Scotty sensed this, and pulled a mafia bat out from his…pocket? No one was sure. But he threw it towards the group, and it clattered to the ground.
“No one quite knows how to play MafiaSportsball, but we’ll go slow and steady, and we’ll figure it out together. Because that’s what winners do.”
He blew the whistle.
Day 1 has begun. Day 1 will end January 29th at 7pm Eastern.
