Re: Phenon Mafia: Day 1 - And Into the Fire
Response to Dyslexicon:
1. I flagged you but didn't vote for the same reason Jay did: to wait for your response. I did mention this, but kind of in the second degree because I was advising someone not to pile votes on you until you responded.
2. Unless the marmot has actual reason to suspect me, I wouldn't read into his vote for me too deeply. He and I have history: in the Talking Heads game I tunneled him hard out of desperation and game-fatigue. He owes me many, many lynch votes. That is, unless he has actual reasons to vote for me pertaining to this game.
3. Mentioning my paranoia was a fluff post, and not at all sincere. I haven't played Mafia in...like, a year? More? That was just me saying it was good to be back.
4. Brusquely saying, 'No,' to my posts without explanation felt almost like you were trying to alienate me or something, because I've played only one game here before. I was taking it personally, I'm disregarding it now, never mind.
5. Most importantly: your response to the 'slip'. Your initial responses read as aloof, as if to laughingly blame us for misreading an obvious and dumb mistake. You insisted that you weren't dumb enough to make such a mistake--something backed up by Jay, who said that not even most beginners would slip such information.
But as Jay also said, even vets mistakes. Egregious ones. I've done it. Jay's done it. Most vets I've played with have done it. I think that the true mistake is not so much in your original slip but the manner in which you responded to it. First aloofness, and then explaining yourself.
Also, citing other games and saying, 'But look at my meta! See? I've done this before!' is a classic scum move.

Re: Phenon Mafia: Day 1 - And Into the Fire
I'm not reading it as dishonest at all. I don't see a correlation between her intention of the post, and her town reads on the players she mentioned. It reads to me like she made a joke post, but also happens to think they're townies insofar. She also didn't expressly say that she thought they were town; she said Jay could 'safely assume' that, because she didn't have any scum reads on them at the moment.Quin wrote:I gave my thoughts about it when I answered Golden here:Strawhenge wrote:I agree that her response was fluff, but I don't see how she's 'appeasing' Jay. Would you care to unpack that thought a little?Quin wrote:I haven't played with hammer votes in a long time, so I didn't really think about the strategy behind it. So yeah, I don't think anybody else should throw their votes down on Dyslexicon yet. Let's discuss some other stuff.
What does everyone think about Sorsha re: my 'case'?
To say it more explicitly, I feel like not being honest about her intentions behind the post and just playing into the idea that it was read-based was an effort to appease 3J.Quin wrote:By answering the questions the way she did, it looks like she's confirming her post to have been based on reads, which omits what I think the post was based on, the gimmick. That's the impression I get.Golden wrote:I didn't really expect Sorsha to consider the girls to be town. At this point, any argument for why one should be voted to have the map was inherently facetious.
I find Sorsha's response fair. She didn't say she read them as civilian, she said she had no reason to think they weren't. Useful pedantry. I disagree with Quin's assessment that she 'appeased' Jay.
That's how I'm interpreting it anyway. It's entirely possible that she would want to look good by appeasing Jay, but I can't imagine why she would have needed to appease him. He wasn't accusing her of anything, so she would have no reason to be defensive.

I would advise what Jay advised: give Dyslexicon a chance to respond before piling votes on. We don't want a premature hammer-lynch if Dyslexicon has a reasonable explanation.Silver Lantern wrote:I think the # of mafia thing is suspicious enough that I have no issues voting for him/her.

I don't know if Syndicate indicates people as 'online' for a while after they log off, like on RYM, but Dyslexicon was 'browsing this forum' through to the start of pg.7, plus some minutes. FWIW.

So far we only have two non-self-nominations for getting the map. Golden for Jay, speedchuck for Quin, and I'm already wary of both of them. But this is Day 0; I'm wary of everything.
My kneejerk is to say that Jay should have the map, because if he's town, I trust him to make good use of it. But that's kneejerk.
I can honestly say that I will likely only be able to get on once a day this weekend, so I shouldn't get the map. Not if I infer correctly that having it would require me to be on more than possible. (Again, that's only for this weekend, I'll be on more after that.)

Re: Phenon Mafia: Day 1 - And Into the Fire
Thought so far: the debate between Quin and Jay over the Sorsha thing feels pretty weird. I'm wondering why, so early in the game, Quin doesn't just respond to Jay's question to Sorsha ('Do you really think all the women are town?') by saying, 'I think the question was fluff.'
I don't know what that could indicate at the moment, nor does it get my hackles up wert Quin or Jay. It just stood out as, very likely, an argument made of nothing. I've seen numerous similar conversations occur between townies in the past.
I'm literally just typing words right now because I feel guilty for my low post count and I better hit submit before this gets any worse.
