Cartomancy [Game Over]

Image

Cartomancy Mafia
A mafia game for any number of players, 100 post cap per player per phase.

Setup features to note:
Role claim all you like, as there are only four roles in the game
No info-dumping regarding what card you drew and how you used it
Phases are 48/24
Thread will be closed at night
Votes will be movable
Both Chops and NKs will be flipped
There will be no N0
Self targeting will not be allowed
Double targeting will not be allowed
The game isn't bastard but there might be an unexpected temporary element or two that you may or may not like.

Mystics (Civilians)

The Oracle and 14 Vanilla Town.

The Oracle: Every night the Oracle reads a three card spread. This entails choosing three players. At the end of the night phase, The Oracle will learn the three cards that were drawn by that group of three players, but not which player drew which card. The Oracle cannot be night killed.

Order of the Holy Fire (Mafia)

A religious sect that believes that anything magical or occult must be wiped from the face of the earth. Traditional mafia win condition.

The Zealot and four Mafia Goons.

The Zealot: This is a Mafia Godfather. He can’t be eliminated by poll until his goons are all dead. Also controls the kill. While anyone on the team can submit a kill target, it will function as the Godfather’s ability.

Cards and their effects

Each night, every player that voted in the previous poll draws a card. The card they draw determines their ability for the night. Only two players will not draw a card, The Oracle and The Zealot. If a player neglects casting a vote, they will not be able to draw a card in the night phase.

The Major Arcana:

Image

The Fool - Beginnings, Innocence, Spontaneity, A Free Spirit. A player who has drawn this card will appear to be a vanilla town if they should be targeted for any kind of checks that night.

Image

The Magician - Manifestation, Resourcefulness, Power, Inspired Action. The player who draws this card may choose a suit to manifest for the night. You will not learn what the suit does until after you choose. If you draw The Magician again, you cannot choose the same suit you did previously until you have manifested all the suits at least once. The suits are as follows:

Cups: Emotions and Intuitions
Pentacles: Finances and Material Possessions
Wands: Energy and Motivation
Swords: Thoughts and Actions

Image

The High Priestess - Intuition, Sacred Knowledge, Divine Feminine, The Subconscious Mind. The player who draws this card will be told who targets them that night, but not what card effect was used on them.

Image

The Empress - Abundance, Growth, Fertility, Nurturing. The player who draws this card can choose one other player who will gain a second use of their ability the following night. This does not apply to one time use cards.

Image

The Emperor - The Father Figure, Protector and Provider, Structure, Rules and Guidelines. The player who draws this card can choose one other player to protect from night kill that night.

Image

The Hierophant - Religious belief, Conformity, Tradition. The player who draws this card will target another player who may not be the only vote on another player at the end of the day phase, and they may not be the first player to vote for another player. If they do either of these two things, they will not draw a card the following night.

Image

The Lovers - Love, Harmony, Relationships, Values Alignment, Choices. The player who draws this card will be allowed to choose one other player to have anonymous BTSC with for the following day phase.

Image

The Chariot - Control, Willpower, Success, Action, Determination. The player who draws the Chariot will be able to control another player’s night target, should they have one. However, The Oracle and the Zealot cannot be controlled by the Chariot.

Image

Strength - Strength, Courage, Persuasion, Influence, Compassion. The player who draws this card may jail another player. By doing so they block all of their actions regardless of what it is, but also protect them from any night actions that might target them except for a night kill.

Image

The Hermit - Soul Searching, Introspection, Being Alone, Inner Guidance. The player who draws this card can target a player who will be forced to retreat from other players. If they have BTSC, they may not use it for the following day phase. Additionally, they will be limited to three posts during the following day, but they will also be removed from the poll.

Image

Wheel of Fortune - Good Luck, Karma, Destiny, A Turning Point. The player who draws this may choose to do one of two things. They can either choose another player who will have two votes placed on them in the following poll, or they can choose another player who will have two votes removed from them in the following poll. Just remember, the wheel of fortune is always turning.

Image

Justice - Justice, Fairness, Truth, Cause and Effect, Law. If the player who holds this card is night killed, they may choose to take another player of their choice down with them. If the player who holds this card is eliminated by poll, they may choose to take one of their voters down with them.

Image

The Hanged Man - Pause, Surrender, Letting Go, New Perspectives. If the player who draws this card is either night killed or eliminated while they hold this card, their death will be deferred until the end of the following cycle. This will be announced at the time it should have occurred. They can vote but they cannot draw another card.

Image

Death - Endings, Change, Transformation, Transition. This card is never drawn. Instead, Death follows the Zealot, who is the harbinger of death. Though the Zealot never partakes in divination, Death is his constant companion and he cannot escape it.

Image

Temperance - Balance, Moderation, Patience, Purpose. If the player who draws this card chooses to play it, a number of living civilians equal to the number of living mafia members will be randomly chosen. The posts made by each during the following day phase will be added up and compared. If the totals are balanced within 5 posts of each other, the player who drew the Temperance card will be granted one alignment check. If they are not in balance within 5 posts of each other, the player will only be told how many total players were tallied. As this card has no useful purpose for the mafia, if a mafia member draws it, their night kill becomes a strongman kill for the following night.

Image

The Devil - Shadow Self, Attachment, Addiction, Restriction. The player who draws this card may choose to attach themselves to another player for the following cycle (day/night). Doing so allows this player to obtain use of the other player’s card the following night, but also binds them to that player. Whatever happens to that player also happens to the person who drew the Devil card. The chosen player will not know the Devil was used on them, they will use their card as normal. However, if they draw a one time use card, the person who drew the Devil may steal this one time use from them.

Image

The Tower - Sudden Change, Chaos, Upheaval, Revelation, Awakening. This card may only be used once in the game. The player who draws this card may choose to randomize all night targets.

Image

The Star - Hope, Faith, Purpose, Renewal. If the player who draws this card is a civilian, they may guess the identity of The Oracle and will be told if they are correct.

Image

The Moon - Illusion, Fear, Anxiety, Subconscious, Intuition. This card can only be used once in the game. The person who draws this card may choose to end the day phase immediately. The top vote earner at the time the card is played will be eliminated just as if the day had progressed normally. If no one has any votes at the time the card is played, no one will be eliminated.

Image

The Sun - Positivity, Fun, Warmth, Vitality, Success. This card can only be used once in the game. The person who draws this card may choose to end the night phase early. Only night actions which have already been turned in at the time the Sun is played will go through.

Image

Judgement - Judgement, Rebirth, Inner Calling, Absolution. This card will not be used more than once in the game. The player who draws this card has the choice whether or not to absolve the person who gains the most votes in the following day poll, resulting in no elimination.

Image

The World - Completion, Integration, Accomplishment, Travel. The player who draws this card may choose to hold it. If they make it to the final day and still hold the card, they will be granted a personal win, regardless of their alignment or the outcome of the game. However, they cannot draw any other cards for as long as they choose to hold The World. They can choose to let it go at any time during the game and they will draw as usual after they do.

Re: Cartomancy [Pre-Game, DO NOT POST]

Some notes before we begin:

1. Please look over the setup, I made some small changes to it for balance purposes as I was going over the setup during sign ups, so make sure the setup is clear.

2. The card you draw will be told to you at the start of the night phase and you will have until an hour before the end of the night phase to turn in your targets, when applicable.

3. End of phases will be 8:00 PM EST, unless I run into a problem for some reason. In any case I need to change it, I will let you know in advance what to expect. However, I am going to stick as close to that time as possible.

4. I included preferred pronouns in the player list. It's important to me as a host, that we try to respect preferred pronouns. Remember that respect is the most important value we try to adhere to at The Syndicate.

5. Along that same line, I really dislike insulting another person's intelligence, so please avoid calling people names such as dumb, stupid, etc.

6. All the cards used are from actual tarot decks except for two of them. If you want more information about any of them, shoot me a message and I'll let you know what deck they are from.

7. Since there are so many powers shifting around, I will be using a discord hub in order to keep target submissions in one spot and make it less likely something falls through the cracks.

Please enter the Cartomancy Hub: https://discord.gg/ZxcyxhKDZN

Roles have been distributed, and I would like to try to get everyone into the hub and their private channel before the game starts at 8:00 PM EST January 4.

Re: Cartomancy [Day 1]

Game Start - Enter the Tent of the Oracle

Once inside the tent, the sounds of the fair become distant and muffled. It takes your eyes a moment to adjust to the dim lighting. There is a small, round table in the middle of the equally small tent. It is draped in a thick material, with an altar cloth spread out over the top. Incense burns in a tray on the table, the wispy tendrils of the smoke curling and rising and the smell of sage hanging heavy in the room as it dissipates. A woman sits in the large wicker chair on the far side of the table. Her shoulders wrapped in a black crocheted shawl, her dark eyes studying you with keen interest as you enter.

"Have a seat," she says as she motions toward the empty chair in front of you with a perfectly manicured hand.

You lower yourself into the seat, wondering why you felt such trepidation to be here. Perhaps it was those people protesting about it earlier.

"Don't let the Zealot and his followers dissuade you. The cards can help guide you to finding truth."

Your eyes widen and you stammer, "H-- How-- How did you know?"

The Oracle only gives you a knowing smile in response to your question. You dig in your pocket and pull out a crumpled $5 bill, which you set on the table. The mysterious woman begins to shuffle the cards, still studying you as she does. The cards make a pleasing sounds as she shuffles, it was almost mesmerizing. You become aware of the fact she is muttering something quietly under her breath, the words too softly spoken to be distinguishable. As she shuffles, a card suddenly flips out of the deck as though leaping in escape. It lands facedown on the table. The Oracle reaches down and turns the card over, revealing the seven of swords. She taps a dark fingernail on it thoughtfully before she looks up at you once more.

"There is someone around you who is extremely deceptive. You must be very cautious, because this person will surely betray you."

The woman turns the deck over to reveal the card at the bottom of the deck. Death.

"The Zealot!" The Oracle's matter of fact tone suddenly took on a sense of urgency. "It is worse than I thought. The Order of the Holy Fire will come for you when you least expect it. If you wish to escape Death, you will have to find them before they find you."

Day 1 has begun. You will have until the poll closes at 8:00 PM EST January 6th to decide who you will chop. Good luck!

Re: Cartomancy [Day 1]

To be clear, there is a 100 post cap, which means during each day phase, each player can make no more than 100 posts. This remains in effect throughout the entirety of the Day Phase.

Re: Cartomancy [Day 1]

A couple points I feel I should clarify.

Ties will be resolved in favor of the mafia.

There will be no hammers except possibly in a final situation. I will let you know at that time if we will be using a hammer.

Edit to clarify:
Ties will be resolved in favor of the mafia, when there is no mechanical benefit to the mafia for either option, the results will be randomized.

Apologies guys for all the edits, this is the first time I've tried using such a mechanic.

Also, I was preparing my cards for the night and I realized there was a typo in the Hanged Man card that I have now fixed. Previously it read "They cannot vote but they cannot draw a new card." This was supposed to read, "They can vote, but they cannot draw another card." It has been corrected.

Re: Cartomancy [Day 1]

I have been asked this question privately, and I am going to answer it publicly. If the godfather has the most votes at the end of the day, the person with the second most votes will be eliminated in their place.

I apologize for delay, I've been dealing with some stuff since I got up.

Ok, someone pointed out a situation I hadn't considered, which I appreciate. Unfortunately there is a balance issue with the Godfather, so what will happen instead is no chop will happen if the Godfather is the leading wagon. However, once this happens, the night kill will be able to be carried out by any member of the mafia team from that point on.

I apologize profusely guys, for not noticing earlier. Please PM if you have questions.

TLDR:
Godfather/Zealot gets most votes = no chop and the kill is no longer exclusively carried out by Zealot.

Re: Cartomancy [Day 1]

End of Day 1 - Now Who's Flailing?

"Three balls for $1! Put a friend in the seat and try to dunk them," a carnie calls out, juggling the balls as he tempts people to come and give the dunk tank a whirl. The line here is longer than most of the other games. It's comprised mostly of teenage boys eager to show up their buddies. You stand in line to purchase an elephant ear and as you wait for your delicious deep fried pastry to be done, you idly watch one after another miss the bullseye target. Then suddenly there is a loud DING! The small plank drops, dumping fingersplints into the large vat of very cold water. The group of friends gathered around to cheer and jeer at the unfortunate soul who now flailed, trying to fight their way back up to the top. Aren't those things supposed to be more shallow than that? The laughter subsides as the realization dawns on all the observers that fingersplints was in real trouble. By the time they fish her from the water, they are limp and lifeless. So much for their fun day at the fair.

fingersplints has been chopped. She was Vanilla Town. It is now Night 1, card draws will be going out momentarily and you will have until 7:00 PM EST January 7 (tomorrow) to turn in your night actions in your private channel.

The thread is now locked for the night.

Please vote in the poll to tell me if you would rather I lift the post cap one hour before the End of Day or leave it as is.

Re: Cartomancy [Day 1]

End of Night 1 - Psych!

The lights shone brightly on the various carnival rides as you stroll along the walkway down the main drag. Over the noises of the fair, a voice can be heard over the PA, "The power of divination is a power of darkness and those who call upon it are children of darkness! Come out of the darkness and into the light!"

A bright flash filled the sky, making it as bright as day.

Re: Cartomancy [Day 2]

End of Day 2 - Are You Freaking Kidding Me?!

A voice calls out from outside the grandstand, crackling over a small portable amplifier and microphone. The man in the white shirt and black tie waved a Bible in the air as he yelled, "When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, Revelations 6:12. You shall see the signs and the truth will become known!"

The Moon card has been played. Alison has been chopped. She was Vanilla Town. The thread is locked, it is now Night, and I am unprepared for this kind of chaos what the heck did I do to myself when I made this game?

Seriously though, I will get cards out in the next hour, you will have until 7 PM EST to turn in any night actions and the night will end at 8 PM EST tomorrow (January 7). Bear with me.

Re: Cartomancy [Night 2]

End of Night 2

You climb the concrete steps of the grandstands, intent on spending an hour watching some harness races. You've got the ticket for the bet your placed in one hand and a small bucket of popcorn in the other. You climb the steps until you spy an empty spot on the cold metal bleacher style seats. Too bad you have to sidle you way over to it in front of all these people. A woman in her late forties rolls her eyes as you slip by, softly uttering a midwest apology, "Ope, I'm just going to slide right past you here." You take a seat in the empty spot on the other side of her young child, who you estimate is maybe seven or eight years old. He keeps elbowing you. At first you thought it was an accident, but soon you realize he is being a little -- no, no, we need to keep this PG-13 so I'll stop there. A teenage girl absorbed in her phone gets up and leaves, so you scoot a little farther down the bench. As you continue watching the harness races, something catches your attention. A woman is leaning over the railing of the grandstand to talk to someone in the entry below, not aware that someone behind her was watching, waiting for an opportunity just like this. Before you can shout any kind of warning you see it all unfold in slow motion. The figure shoves the woman over the railing. You can hear the dull thud as she hits the concrete below, followed by screams and panic of the shocked crowd.

The Tower was played last night. Neon has been killed by The Order of the Holy Fire. She were Vanilla Town. Night 2 has ended and it is now Day 3. You have until the poll closes at 8:00 PM EST January 9 to choose who to eliminate.

I had to piece it back together as I neglected to save it in the middle of the chaos. I also edited it into the EoD 1 post so it can be found easily.
Wait I just looked back and my vote isn't there. I was on Roxy at EoD1 if I'm right
Good catch, thank you! I missed putting the Roxy votes in there. It has been corrected in the original post.

Re: Cartomancy [Day 3]

Baudib1 has been modkilled. This decision has no relevance to game mechanics or the state of the game. Do not discuss the manner of why he was modkilled further.

Re: Cartomancy [Day 3]

I am about to jump into doing some work and probably won't be as present in here until tomorrow afternoon, barring anyone calling me in here for a problem, so I want to leave a couple reminders here before I go.

First, we have a minor here. I am sure he has heard plenty of swear words, it's kind of hard to avoid in everyday life. However, let's try to rein it in a little bit if we could. No one will be perfect, I got a little sweary earlier in the game and all, so this isn't like a HUUUUGE deal, but it would be appreciated if we try not to be too overboard with content and language we use. Thanks!

Second, since the Tower was used last night and it randomized everything now is the best time to remind everyone not to discuss what they do during the night. You can hypothesize about what cards might result in the effects you see in game, but you can't let people know what card you drew or how you used it. I appreciate it folks.

Third, I know the game is frustrating. But I love you all and I'm grateful you played and i hope we can all remember it's just a game. Also, please try not to call people stupid, dumb, etc.

:daisy: It's been a chaotic first couple cycles, and I am enjoying watching you all play and i hope at the end it will be a good experience for everyone, regardless of outcome.

Re: Cartomancy [Day 3]

I realize mafia is a really frustrating game guys, and this game has been pretty frought with tension. But in the end, just remember it is only a game as well play for a hobby, and no one here is actually an evil terrible person, and you all are truly lovely people. Let's try to keep from letting it become toxic.

Re: Cartomancy [Night 3]

End of Day 3 - Ring Toss Them Out

After the chaos at the grandstand, you needed a break. So after getting yourself a pork loin sandwich, a side of fries, and a soda, you sat down in the picnic bench style seating of the open-sided tent. From here you can eat your lunch and watch people pass by outside. You really do see some interesting people at a county fair. You start to become aware of a disturbance at the little ring toss booth across the way. You never understood why it was so popular, but people loved tossing the rings onto the top of a wooden cane, which they then won. Who needed those dumb canes anyway? Everyone had started yelling angrily at someone who was working in the booth. You realize they are saying it was them that had pushed poor Neon. Things escalate quickly and before anyone has time to stop and think things through, the dumb wooden cane prizes become weapons with which to beat poor Roxy. It didn't take long for the mob to dispatch them. You can't remember the fair ever being so bloody before.

Roxy was chopped, they were Vanilla Town. It is now Night 3 and the thread has been locked. I will be sending out the cards in the next few minutes. You have 23 hours (7:00 PM EST) to turn in your night actions. Night will end at 8:00 PM EST.

Re: Cartomancy [Day 4]

End of Night 3 - He Saw It Coming

A ruckus erupts near the the funhouse. There is a group of people gathered around gossiping.

"They found a body in the mirrors."

"How did it happen?"

"I heard it was a broken neck."

"How brutal! And in the hall of mirrors, you said?"

"Yeah. I'd imagine he saw them coming but couldn't find the way out fast enough."

As you watch, they carry RondoDimBuckle's body from the funhouse and place him on a stretcher, before covering him with a sheet.

RondoDimBuckle has been killed. He was Vanilla Town. You have until the poll ends at 8:00 PM EST January 12 (48 hours) to choose who to eliminate.

Re: Cartomancy [Day 4]

To be clear about consequences of going over cap:
First day you go over cap before an hour to end of day: You will not draw a card the following night.
Second day you go over cap before an hour to end of day: Your vote will not be counted the following day.
Third day you go over cap before an hour to end of day: Modkill.

Re: Cartomancy [Day 4]

End of Day 4 - Where did he go?

As you walk through the 4H building where all the kids' projects on are on display, you hear shouting from somewhere in the middle of the building. Curiosity gets the better of you, and you wander close enough to see the action, without getting caught up in it. People shout and shove Creature around, accusing them of killing Rondo. Just when you think it might come to actual blows, one of the 4H judges steps in and tries to calm the angry crowd down. While the arguing ensues, Creature slips away. When the mob turns their attention back to him, he's nowhere to be found.

Day 4 has ended. No one was chopped. The thread is now locked. I am not as prepared for the night actions as normal, I will be working on sending them out over the next 20 minutes. You will then have 23 hours to turn in your night actions (by 7:00 PM EST on January 13).

Re: Cartomancy [Day 4]

End of Night 4 - Big Fish in a Little Bowl

Everywhere you look there seems to be some kind of mayhem. This time, you find a stream of water trickling down the walkway. It piques your interest and you follow it back to the booth where people toss golf balls into little fish bowls in an attempt to win a goldfish. There you discover Seanzie, his head submerged in the tank that holds the spare goldfish while the tap continually fills it and overflows. Poor Seanzie.

It is now Day 5. Seanzie has been killed. He was Vanilla Town. The thread is unlocked and you have until the poll ends to choose who to chop.

Re: Cartomancy [Day 5]

It is not in the spirit, no. If this is broken again I will be forced to resort to modkill. Everyone is allowed to put forward what they think happened, but they can’t put anything forward as fact (whether true or not) that they know from night actions. Therefore, even a fake or incorrect claim of info will have to met with modkill just as much as a true claim. If you think someone is bad based on your night actions, use the thread to support it.

Next offense will be a modkill regardless of who it is.

Re: Cartomancy [Day 5]

The Death Card

The Death card is perhaps the most misunderstood card in the tarot deck. Death looks scary, so that's understandable. However, it most often does not mean literal death. It means a conclusion. There are other cards associated with the end of a chapter, a period, a relationship, or an endeavor. But Death is the only inevitable ending. When you get this card in a reading, it is unavoidable. Something in your life is coming to a close. That can be good or bad, depending on the thing and also depending on how tightly you are hanging on to it.

We have come to the inevitable end of this game. Broken host rules have put us in a position that we don't believe it is any longer possible for the mafia to win. And it is not a fair win for the town when rules have been broken to achieve it. So instead of a satisfactory ending, this will simply be an inevitable ending. The game is a draw.

Cartomancy Mafia has ended in a draw.

Re: Cartomancy [Game Over]

A note from your host:
I understand that it is not the norm these days to have games in which you can't just dump the information you know. I know that is difficult for some players who aren't accustomed to it. I attempt to build my games with a variety of explanations for things which you may see occur. I do that because I don't like when mafia becomes more formulaic. I enjoy games with nuance that force players to use their intuition and to attempt to persuade other players of who they believe is bad. So when I create host rules, I do so in order to protect the integrity of such a game.

I don't think the setup was at all perfect. I shouldn't have allowed role claiming. I shouldn't have made the Oracle impervious to NK. Those were mistakes on my part and they honestly made the game extremely town sided as far as balance. I made other adjustments that I realized were problematic in game, all of the problems were also town sided in balance. So for the mafia to have done as well as they have, is a testament to just how good a game they played. When you play a game, pay attention to the host rules. They are there for a reason.

Finally, it is absolutely not in the spirit of the game to intentionally break these host rules in order to gain advantage from the punishment. This is not the first time I have seen this put forward as a valid tactic. So I want to be perfectly clear here, because I am putting this down to culture difference between sites. Do not ever do this in a Syndicate game. This is a major breach of our site's code of conduct. A host puts a lot of time and effort into designing and hosting their games. They create those rules to protect the integrity of the game balance. When you break them you are being incredibly disrespectful of that person's time and effort to host a game for your enjoyment. Don't do this. You are supposed to be playing against the other team, not against the host. And when you try to find loopholes in the game design to exploit you stopped playing against the opposing team and now are playing against the host. Don't do this here, just don't.

I don't believe anything that happened here happened maliciously. I fully believe that it was a case of someone not being accustomed to this style of game design and finding it difficult to know how to navigate that and also to a cultural difference. I am upset, yes. I have never had a game end like this before. I am not angry at anyone, however, because I don't believe it was done in bad faith. But I can't force the mafia to spend the rest of the game likely losing when they shouldn't have been in that position to begin with. I talked this over with them, and together we made the decision to end it in a draw.

The first post has been updated.

Re: Cartomancy [Game Over]

I polled the town to see if they felt the game should be called a draw or if they feel the mafia deserve to be credited with the win. The overwhelming response to that question was yes, the wolves deserve the win. So Cartomancy will not be called a draw, it will be credited as a mafia win.

Well played, wolves.

And town, thank you for playing despite what ended up being such a tumultuous game. Thank you lucy for trying to navigate what might have felt like a really difficult position to be in. I know you were put through a lot too, and I appreciate your effort.
