Hi all, checking in! Great opening post ^^

I can see Golden's point here, she could have easily chosen a different word. "Filming" perhaps would be more appropriate. It could be an easy way to tell the truth while lying. Have you ever done that? Makes it easier to accomplish. If you're telling the truth in your lie, you're less likely to have tells.

However, I'm personally leaning towards the cafeteria worker. For reals, who goes to the movies by themselves? Lamest alibi ever, you don't even have a friend to back up your claim? :suspish:

I find it a little botherseome that the porter is up to three votes already... did Aces even speak before voting?

Mostly, I feel this way just because I can't really see how the post supports a conclusion that the porter did it and I think it's the wrong outcome, and I'm always bothered when I can't understand the perspective.

No-one has managed to give any reason why the post actually supports this conclusion...

Epignosis said there were clues in the post. I don't see any clues the porter did it?

For it to be the porter, he would have to have had enough guile to pretend he had a limp, and pretend he was drunk (slurring his words). He couldn't actually BE drunk, since he just got off work. But his answer when it comes to the hat shows no guile at all. He lit up and wanted to talk about hats, tied himself in knots, and seemed more interested in making sure noone took his hat than the fact he might be suspected for a crime because of it. Someone who had enough smarts to change his gait and speech would have the smarts to handle that situation a lot different to the way he did. He also would have had to ditch his work uniform and change into his other clothes before committing the crime. He's also one of only two who don't appear to know any Phyllis.

The other four also all have things that feel like clues to me eg the dogs, or the reference to 'shooting', or the apparently false alibi, or the fact that Phyllis had 'rich parents', but I don't see anything in the second one that feels like a clue in the same way.

It just seems so unlikely to me. He feels like the only one of the five I can discard as definitely wrong. And I haven't yet seen anyone really explain in the thread why he is likely enough to already have three votes.

how much time do we have until voting?

the porter seems the least suspicion, thats why he could be the one, also the actress with the shooting thing could be a clue, so im leaning those ways

I'm gonna vote Maude. I may not get the love for the porter vote, but I do recognise that we are never going to be able to come up with 'the answer' - and different people get a different vibe from Epi's post.

My logic is that Epi said there were clues in the post (therefore I don't think it is a complete turkey shoot), and for me there are three clues that point to Maude. One is the fact she was 'shooting'. The second is the fact she is an actress (so the most likely to be able to effect a different gait, voice, costume etc than what she normally has). The third is that both Phyllis's that she knows involve a situation that 'deserves' to be avenged, giving her motive.

Everyone else appears to have provided an unambiguous alibi, be unable to effect the gait/voice/costume, or lack motive. Maude is the only one that gives me three ticks.

(However, I SO hope it turns out to be the cobbler, and the fur coat is Phyllis. That would be most epic. :D )

Interesting analyses since this morning, but I believe I will go with my first choice, the Watchmaker, because a) I haven't had any mind-blowing revelations since to make me change my mind and b) if I'm right about him and I go somewhere else, I'll be more pissed than anything (this is my same approach to standardized tests. Go figure).

That's now four votes for the porter and not a single jot of rationale from any of them - either in the posts I've quoted or any others. Especially concerning to me with the latter two given I would have hoped they would at least engage on why they disagreed with my reasons why it wouldn't be the porter.

Golden, I'm saying his gait became labored after he was tired. This comes from him needing to sit down when he was talking to the detectives. The hat issue is all about how he changed his story as they interrogated him: he he had several flat hats, then he didn't then he had only one and that one was so special he didn't want anyone to take it away. I'm not sure why he'd have to ditch his uniform, he could have killed with it on except for the flat cap. Most of all though the others had things about them that prevented them from being the killer: one couldn't walk, one couldn't talk, one was at a movie. All except for Maude and it could very well be her except her alibi seems like it would have checked out - she would have been stupid to not know they could confirm she was really shooting - film.

At any rate, I am not sure that I am right it's just the best guess I can make with whats given. I wouldn't be at all surprised if you were right.

I'm voting porter now.

I have always taken day 0 votes seriously. They can affect the outcome of the game. Certainly when I host, they do affect the outcome of the game.

I'm just flagging early. Jumping on bandwagons without explanation gets you my eye. Easy thing to do if you are bad.

Nope. I don't see a poll like this any different from a lynch poll. An option is in front, and people jump on it without explanation. Easy place to hide. No culpability if its wrong, no harm done if its right. That's what I call a bandwagon.

I understand your perspective. But it is a very 'no culpability' perspective. A good way to hide your intentions on the occasions you are bad. A good way to play a very consistent game across different types of role.

In this case, Epignosis had stated that 1) there was a correct answer and 2) there were clues to the correct answer in the story. I know there are actually plenty of day 0 polls which don't have any real importance, or where you know there is no ability to glean the right answer. But there was enough evidence that this one is not one of those.

Day 1: A Number Like That Could Leave You Depressed
The chief of police scowled.

“No, you idiots. The eyewitness lied. He was the murderer all along. And that’s why you morons will never work in this profession. You believe anything anybody says. And one day that approach is going to come crashing right down on you. Mark my words, one day-”

A discordant racket shook the room. The would-be detectives covered their faces and tried not to breathe in any of the debris. Before the dust could clear, the sounds of weasels laughing cut through the air.

“Hey, what do you get when you drop a piano down a mine shaft?”

“Uh, a broken piano?”

“No. Ab minor!”

Shrill laughter pierced the room.

“Stop laughing!” cried a menacing voice. “One of these days, you’re going to die laughing.”

Keys and wood were everywhere, and underneath the rubble was the body of the police chief.

It is now Day 1. You have 24 hours to lynch someone.
