Thank you for the well wishes. I appreciate the kind words. Getting old has little to recommend it, but it's better than the alternative.

We had friends and family over. I had spent about four hours in the kitchen. We had pulled pork sandwiches, coleslaw, ceviche, Southwestern egg rolls, and pretzel bites with cheese sauce, all homemade (okay, we bought the coleslaw), and then coconut chocolate cake.

My friend, who just came back from Egypt and Iraq, gave me a bottle of high-end bourbon (which he did not get from either Iraq or Egypt, as you may well surmise). My brother gave me a case of beer and one of those SNES "retro" consoles (something additional for the kids to fight over). We stayed up late and had a good time.

Then my niece and nephew spent the night, and I made us omelettes consisting of bacon, pepperoni, mushrooms, green onions, red and yellow peppers, and jalapenos.

It was a lovely weekend and fitting end to the summer.
