Asuka Sakai ft. Ado Mizumori - Gin & Tonic & Red Red Roses
My kids were hooked on Katamari Damacy for a while and I have heard this song countless times. It's far beyond any hope of willing myself to treat it like a new experience. But it's a proper swing sub, of which I got very few, and it really is quite delightful. She has a very unique voice that not only makes the song stand out but caters to the childish nature of the game it was composed for. I'm a sucker for everything this brings to the table. It feels like there's never any solo heroing from start to finish, whatever instrument is in the spotlight. There's a wonderful unison to it, like the voice, bass, piano, drum, and flute are all being fabulous at what they do together, vibing each other's experience and propelling it forward. There's no competition when you're playing as a single unit, and when you're all this good at it, the finished product is going to be breathtaking. It had hours of spin time already coming into this, and that depletes a little subconscious wow factor beyond my control, but I don't think it hurt its position.

Tia - Deal with the Devil
You sent me a link to some anime fan mashup of intro scenes that just ends out of nowhere mid-sentence three minutes into the song.
I took the liberty of finding the original.
I assume you'll forgive me, since, well, here we are.
The frantic pace of this is such an instant hit for me. That contrabass sax or whatever is trading off with the running bass at the beginning is dirty as fuck. Her voice should not be legal in moments like 1:35. Her performance doesn't captivate me in league with Ringo's from the billion subs I got last year, but I'm impressed with how much flavor she packs into the endless barrage. I love the way the guitar solo rolls in out of nowhere. The song never hedges on any semblance of stagnation no matter how many times I replay it. This is too hyper to fail, and I absolutely love it for that. Pure satisfaction from start to finish.

Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra - Suikinkutsu
This song kicks off so strong that I found myself backing up and listening to the first minute 45 of it over and over just to relive that feeling of going
how did we get here? After a deceptively moody preamble, the piano is subtle perfection that rushes in out of nowhere with this sense of like, wow this is such an amazing first building block and the prospects of developing a stellar song around it are through the roof. But it's 10 seconds. 10 seconds of this blissful beginning, and the brass subs in just as suddenly but so so smoothly. We're gliding full steam ahead, reaching where the intro piano promised before I'd barely begun to absorb the greatness of the intro itself. And it's only another 45 seconds before that glorious intro riff returns in its evolved form, like we've reached the culmination of everything. This is a seven minute song that basically climaxes three times in the first 90 seconds and rides a five and a half minute jam session from the peak.
The break at 3:30 is a bit jarring, being the first time in 3 minutes that the song doesn't feel completely maxed out in some triumphant finale. I just don't ever want them to let off the euphoria gas. Why is this only 7 minutes? I want more. The song's so loaded out the gate that the piano madness is not enough. I want it to keep going. I want more instruments to join in. I want this to ascend and ascend and never stop. It's the shortest 7 minute song I have ever heard.
If that's a "flaw" holding it back, that's kind of a joke. This song is perfect. I just want it to be even more perfect. This is about as close as a category can get to having two winners. But I think the other option ended up winning for leaving me on a final note of satisfaction rather than going
no wait stop you aren't allowed to end yet.
...Oh God watching these guys with my kids in the Olympic closing ceremony tipped it over. Now they've even got sentimental value or some shit. This was probably always the correct call anyway.

We rock because it's us against them. We found our own reasons to sing. And it's so much less confusing when lines are drawn like that--when people are either consumers or revolutionaries, enemies or friends hanging onto the fringes of the cogs in the system. It's just about knowing where everyone stands. Do you really fucking get it?

GWAR - Crack in the Egg
Classic GWAR gets the most love, and it's certainly better than where they were at in the late 90s, but the direction the band took with Smoot circa War Party and maintained pretty consistently until Brockie died was on a higher level. The gimmick became so much more entertaining to me when they were creating music authentically better than most other heavy metal bands on the market. I can listen to this and smile, but it's no War is All We Know.
Alternatively: I'm going to fuck you with a fish.

7. Beyond time at the peak of a mountain worshipped by anthropomorphic bears
Constant touring is the true realization of non-self, and our journey is nearing a close. We unload the yaks and levitate to the height of serenity to perform as one with the gods, eternity stretching out all around us from our transcendent pillar to heaven. Send me a song for mountains. A song that takes in everything and rises with it. A sense of wind and nature and vastness drawn together into a singularity.
