I watched Blackkklansmen with some friends the other night and I loved it. Disappointed it wasn't too huge a movie with more international release dates (for example any blockbuster gets 2 weekends in my local cinena, this movie got literally 1 weekday showing...). Sweden definitely needs a taste of this to show them how the government itself acts while on national TV. While some moments made me wanna cringe for the black actors, and how difficult it must have been, it's so relevant today. Not just in America mind you, but in Sweden, France, Turkey... racism still exists and this movie is a perfect example of how dumb and disgusting it is. I definitely don't take my skin color for granted since I'm from a Middle Eastern background and have endured my fair share of racism too, but I understand the hardships and cruelty goes far and beyond. Hope one day we will live in a world that doesn't judge. 🙏

John David Washington is amazing and deserves even more recognition than my hubby Adam. I think the first time I saw him in anything and recognized him was in Ballers and I've loved him ever since. An amazing and very emotional actor.

The Film independent Spirit Nominees were announced this morning. These don't tend to match up too strongly with the Oscars, as they only reward films below a certain budget point, so several Oscar contenders like A Star is Born and Vice were ineligible. That said, some interesting signs and concerns can be pulled out of this list... for instance, the voters clearly like Can You Ever Forgive Me? but they failed to nominate Melissa McCarthy, despite it being a category of 6 and Lady Gaga was not eligible...

anyway, to whet your whistle for the upcoming season, here you go!

Suspiria could get a song nomination, or score, or make-up, or really randomly a supporting actress nod for Tilda. Or absolutely nothing.

I benefited from being at TIFF for the world premiere of Green Book. The buzz that came out of it was deafening, and I couldn't get access with my pass, both of which signaled a major player...

i hope we can include movies without this US release date and US box office only stipulation next year. but it's no biggie if it's not possible.

also i have several people i know would be interested in this now that i've seen it unravel. so i can't wait till next year. i might not win this year, because i made a lot of mistakes, but i know what to do next year

Okay, so a quick point. There are free points available for Round 2.

The following films have received nominations and would instantly add those points to your total if you picked them up, as they have not yet opened

Stan & Ollie - 1 pt
Girl - 1 pt
Dumplin' - 1 pt (but this opens tomorrow so you would have to pick it up by 11:59pm)

Of course, to grab those points, you would have to drop a film, which is only possible if you have a film not yet locked into place.

Also... round 3 is the critics choice awards. These nominations will be announced on December 10th. Of course, we don't officially GET to round 3 until the Golden Globes ceremony ends, which is on January 6th. But we will be able to see their nominees, and project points, just like we did with the Globes today.

8 out of 9 players will advance to round 2, and unless iron_dwarf shows up and pulls some last second shenanigans, we know which 8 that will be.

The top SIX in round 2 advance to the critics choice awards. So, people need to look at their rosters and try to figure out WINNERS, as winners add muy muy points to their total, which will determine who moves on.

Looking at the points from nominations, you might think INH is toast, but if he gets just ONE single winner out of his 3 nominees, and ricochet does NOT, INH will move on and Rico won't, etc. That's why I highlighted those hanging points just sitting there waiting to be grabbed.

I think I'm good to go, but it will be interesting to see how the rest of the rosters shake out. I didn't anticipate having so many nominations, I was very worried about actors but I seem to have lucked out.

insertnamehere you have Ballad of Buster Scruggs as one of your films but it went straight to Netflix, so it is eligible to be dropped and replaced by one of those movies I highlighted with available points (or any other film you want that hasn't opened yet)

Ricochet you have TWO films you can drop, Death and Life of John F. Donovan, and Mowgli.

M Plus 7 you have 2 films that haven't opened. I imagine you will hang onto spider-verse, but you could drop Paradox as it never opened.

Iron_Dwarf you have 2 films you can drop, as well.

DharmaHelper - 13 (Destroyer - 1, Can You Ever Forgive Me? - 2, A Star Is Born - 5, Lin-manuel Miranda - 1, John C. Reilly - 1, Richard E. Grant - 1, Charlize Theron - 1, John David Washington - 1)

I feel most confident about A Star is Born netting me at least 10 more points. Richard E. Grant seems like a solid choice for supporting actor so thats maybe 5. Destroyer might get in there, might not.
