"Claiming masons" is a trendy joke/strategy these days. People will say they're masons with each other as a way of saying they're treating one another as town, even though they're not actually mechanically masons.

I'm guessing a power kill? I'd imagine that Maf used an ability to do so, and as such they either feared that JJJ had an ability, or that a doc might save him. Either way I take it that Maf def wanted JJJ dead with no ifs ands or buts, so I take it JJJ was on the right track with his reads.
