[ENDGAME]: Film Directors.

Re: [Day 0]: Film Directors.
I'm missing some names here, like Kieslowski, the Marx brothers, Charlie Chaplin, Wim Wenders...
But this is hard even without those. I love so many movies made by some of these directors, like Magnolia, Mystic River, Rashomon, Solaris (the original one) and many many more.
But,and this is a little embarrassing to admit, because lord knows he has his share of crappy films, out of this list, the one director I would go out to see his movie just because it's his, is Woody Allen. He's my guilty pleasure

I saw at least one film by only 45 or so of those directors.

Re: [Day 0]: Film Directors.
I will be forever grateful to Wim Wenders for introducing a bunch of ignorant North Americans to the absolute wonder that is Bausch's Tanztheatre Wuppertaal. His film so perfectly captured and reproduced the power of Bausch's incredibly visceral, intimate, and theatrical work (no small feat in itself), but the film also (and more importantly for me, who has worshipped that woman's being since I was a wee and terrified little ballerina just beginning to discover the entire world of movement/expression/experience that exists beyond pointe shoes and perfect technique) did an incredible job of forefronting the profound respect and genuine affection that Bausch had for the incredible artists that she worked with. I loved that film, I adored that woman, and I love Wenders for preserving/reimagining her work in a different medium. I should probably watch more of his films...Vompatti wrote: not in a completely non-random order:

Michael Haneke's "Amour" broke me. I just can't even.
I have never been more affected by a film in my entire life. I to this day cannot speak about that film without falling apart.
I should probably not see more of his films, because that one absolutely ruined me and I don't think I could handle that again.
I have a very strange affection for Lars Von Trier's "Melancholia". It was just such an stunningly beautiful, quiet, atmospheric, odd, strangely ecstatic little apocalypse movie. I absolutely love that film. I think that makes me not very cool (my film buff friends universally hated it), but I think about that film often...
I also liked "Dancer in the Dark", so maybe I should watch more of his films, too...

Re: [Day 0]: Film Directors.
von Trier's Melancholia opened me to Wagner. No joke. Ironically, though, most wagnerians I've read actually despise his (mis)use of Wagner in that movie. I finally listened to the whole Tristan und Isolde after seeing the movie and I was instantly transfixed. Melancholia, incidentally, is also the type of movie that's totally bonkers, but in a rather good way.
Also, I'm getting confused why some are writing in normal color and others in green on basically the same subject, i.e. talking about movies.

I dunno about others, but I like to use ot green for anything that I write that I think won't be relevant to people who are trying to catch up on or re-read the thread for game purposes. It's a visual indicator that they can just skip over long chunks that have nothing to do with finding mafia
Since the poll is just a check-in poll, and since it's still Day 0, I am considering all of this chat to be OT (but SUPER informative and enjoyable!!), so I'm using green so skimmers can skip it if they choose to or are pressed for time.....
But I don't think its a hard and fast rule? Whether or not something is OT is pretty subjective, methinks....

Since polls are part of the game I find all discussion related to polls to also be related to the game regardless of how relevant this particular poll is to the rest of the game.

i don't k butt i was once told not to post the word "bump" in a regular colour so i'm assuming everything other than seemingly inductive speculative statements such as "Because of the way A voted in day X poll I believe B is likely to be in the mafia" is widely considered irrelevant by default.A Person wrote:how do you know how relevant what is said is to the game q.m.Vompatti wrote:Since polls are part of the game I find all discussion related to polls to also be related to the game regardless of how relevant this particular poll is to the rest of the game.

I don't know as many directors as the host, but I do see two glaring omissions. Where are Michael Curtiz and Raoul Walsh?
Curtiz directed Casablanca and the Maltese Falcon, both considered among the best movies ever made, and Walsh is probably my second favorite director for such works as White Heat, The Thief of Baghdad, and the Roaring Twenties.

I mean, Tyler Perry makes the list but not Michael freaking Curtiz? I sense a bias towards modern directors at the expense of the classics.

Hi all! Also, Mongoose game w00ticles! Since we all love our Mongoose.
I only went with George Lucas because of how much Star Wars means to me and my childhood. Of the directors on the list I am most familiar with, I would say Kubrick is my favorite.
Also, this is probably all you'll hear out of me until Friday. I'm trying to work on a mini-project for work and have been really tired the last few days. But I have Friday-Sunday off of work so I'll have a bit more energy then.

I have never seen Casablanca. I don't like old movies, I like modern ones. I saw Citizen Kane at some point, and I don't really remember a single frame of it, I just know it bored me. I saw Gone With The Wind recently, and I enjoyed Rhett Butler's character, disliked the main chick, and just didn't feel immersed or invested in the storyline all that much.
In a game such as this, where it seems that so many of you have such a deep respect and admiration for these artsy directors whose movies I will never see, and whose names I will never remember.
My top movie of all time is The Matrix, I think that is the most perfect movie I have seen. Second and third are Braveheart and Aliens.
