This game just made Group H a lot more interesting and harder to predict. It could be wide open for any of the four teams now.

Colombia used their hand to stop a goal that was probably doing to be defended anyway. Got a penalty and a red card for the trouble.

All three goals were on dead ball plays because neither team was competent enough to score otherwise.

Yikes that all sounds pretty bad. Red card 3 minutes in is pretty deserving of shame.

Pretty sure it's a little of both. Much has been written about how soft Group A is on paper. Russia is the lowest-ranked team in the World Cup if you go by the FIFA rankings:

Uruguay = 14th
Egypt = 40th
Saudi Arabia = 67th
Russia = 70th

You could argue that they haven't played anybody yet and that their success is a product of even mediocre European football being superior than anything but the very best coming out of CAF and better than anything coming out of the AFC. We'll see what happens when they play Uruguay next week. Regardless though, they've punched their ticket to the Round of 16, which will probably mean a date with either Portugal or Spain.

My read of this morning's game was that Russia played bland middling football and Egypt vaccilated between being great and terrible.

Egypt were the better team for most of the match to my eye, and I doubt the third goal happens if it wasn't for the daft own goal, because that felt like a product of the second goal taking the wind out of their sails.

I watched the first half of Russia-Egypt and it was scoreless. At halftime I left for work. It's a 15 minute drive. By the time I got there, it was 3-0. A minute later it was 3-1.
