MAFIA ON ICE: CHAMPIONS, CONTENDERS & PRETENDERS
I found a spreadsheet containing all the games I had been working on before I disappeared from the Mafia scene. This is just one a several dozen ideas that had some level of work put into it. Since we're currently in the midst of the NHL playoffs, I thought I could get some hockey fans to give me a little input on this one. Originally, this was going to be a large, 30-player full game. Now that I look at it again, I'd almost prefer to break it down into two speed games, one for each conference. Here's how I envision it playing out:There are three factions of teams in this game:
-Champions have won the Stanley Cup at least once in their history
-Contenders have never won the Cup but at least made it to a Cup Finals
-Pretenders have never been to the Stanley Cup Finals
Originally, the pretenders and contenders were going to be rival mafia groups while the contenders are civvies.
CHAMPIONS:
Anaheim Ducks
Boston Bruins
Calgary Flames
Carolina Hurricanes
Chicago Blackhawks
Colorado Avalanche
Dallas Stars
Detroit Red Wings
Edmonton Oilers
Los Angeles Kings
Montreal Canadiens
New Jersey Devils
New York Islanders
New York Rangers
Philadelphia Flyers
Pittsburgh Penguins
Tampa Bay Lightning
Toronto Maple Leafs
CONTENDERS:
Buffalo Sabres
Florida Panthers
Ottawa Senators
San Jose Sharks
St. Louis Blues
Vancouver Canucks
Washington Capitals
PRETENDERS:
Arizona Coyotes
Columbus Blue Jackets
Minnesota Wild
Nashville Predators
Winnipeg Jets
Teams in RED are from the Eastern Conference and teams in WHITE are from the Western Conference. These lists are subject to change every year, as teams can always claim their first Cup. I was hoping to develop powers for each team that some how relate to their success (or lack their of) as a franchise.
The main problem I see in trying to split them up by conference is that the current Western Conference is split 7-7 between teams that have won a Cup and those who haven't, creating terrible odds for a normal speed game. I have a full list of every team that has ever played for the Stanley Cup since it debuted in 1893, so I could try to even things out by adding a few defunct teams to each game.
I'm really leaning towards crafting a pair of speed games because speed games tend to be less time consuming and my wife might actually let me host speed games. I told her SM3 would be mys last full game but I'm trying to renegotiate that.
Any thoughts, tips, or concerns are appreciated! I'll post a few other game ideas I've kept under lock and key every now and again. I'm not necessarily looking for power suggestions at the moment but you're more than welcome to put them out there.
