Subscription Boxes

Post by bea »

So, my store and I and the BDH, have recently become enamored with the geek monthy full of stuff boxes.

One of my drivers found loot crate, and he would give me the crap he didn't want. Then the hubby and I got loot crate.

Now that dude has moved on to geek box.

And we have this great system where the stuff I don't want out of my loot crate, I give him first dibs on and he brings me everything he doesn't want out of his geek box.

I pick what I like - all the stuff we pass on, I throw into a common pile of things " the rest of my nerds can pick and choose from.

BDH and I have had regular conversations that revolve around "you can give this to the nerds and they will love you more."

I was curious as to what other people think of these things. Do you do them? There seems like there is a new "loot crate" sort of thing for every sort of desire out there. (I'm really curious about the snacks one!! I like candy and chocolate and granola and SNACKS!!!) I'm intreagued by the pet ones but all the ones I've seen are dog centric and I only have kittahs atm.

What subscription boxes do you subscribe to? Do you hate them? Love them? Thoughts? Suggestions?

Huh I didn't know about those, they sound cool! I've gotten snack boxes though, I had a subscription to Graze for a while and most of their stuff is pretty good.

I think graze was the snack box I was looking at - what did you like about it? what didn't you like about it? why did you quit getting it?

I liked most of the sweet things, they had pretty good combinations of flavors. I liked the savory/salty things a little less but some were fine. You're sent a variety and you can rate the stuff you get, so if you like it you're more likely to get it again, and if you don't like it you can choose to never get it again. I just stopped getting it because I had to get a new debit card and canceled the old one and never bothered to update it and anyway I had been thinking about stopping just because I didn't really need the extra snacks enough to keep paying for it. I might reactivate it again sometime though

I think Leggy and DH have also gotten another brand, Naturebox, and I think they've said they like it. leggy actually sent me a free nature box once, I don't remember being thrilled about the ones I got but I'd believe they have some good stuff as well.

Alison once sent me a free HelloFresh box, I had a lot of fun making the meals myself and they were all delicious. But I cannot afford subscription boxes like that, they are way too expensive to even consider. I'd love a monthly tea subscription, though.

If I wanted a box of random stuff I'd go to an auction.

I got a gift card for a free Blue Apron Box. I will have it next week, and will report. I don't know if it is something I could afford on an ongoing bases, but I can get only 1 box a month, so that might be doable if I like it.

And yeah, I have gotten boxes of random stuff at auctions or tag sales, and that is pretty interesting. Last week I bought some girls entire CD collection of random home made mix tapes, about 30 of them, for $3 at a garage sale. SOme of it is horrendous, but I have found some NOFX, and some live sounding stuff I have yet to identify.

I got my first Blue Apron, First meal was a spinach pesto gnocci with asparagus, and it was outstanding. All the ingredients premeasured, and very easy to follow instructions. This would be something easy to recreate myself, none of the ingredients were too crazy. I have a pasta dish and a fish dish still to make.

It is not something I can afford weekly, but once a month, it is fun and it expands my cooking horizons, I recommend it so far.

For a long time I wanted to join Loot Crate because I kept hearing about it and I thought it was actually Lute Crate. But then I saw it spelled out and determined I would not soon be the owner of any lutes, so I never signed up.
