Re: Hogwarts Mafia - Day 1

This Glorf talk reminds me of the presence of Veritaserum. This game has lie detection - can we lie-detect any post successfully, or are there restrictions? Some games have a rule that you can't LD answers to direct questions, to avoid everyone lining up and saying "I am a Civilian" as an automatic checkable phrase. Also, what happens when Glorf is given Veritaserum? Super-honesty?

There isn't any logic to it. I've been bad with juliets before, and juliets loves chat (see: discord). We would have been talking this stuff up, and juliets asks questions about things even when bad.

So my point is this:

juliets and I are not bad teammates together.

Use that. Work with it. Bye.

This seems like a question better directed toward the host than the game at large, which gives me the impression you didn't ask it because you care about the answer.
Well, the question can only be answered by the host. I care to have the question answered because it matters to those who have access to Veritaserum. I don't 'care' about the answer with respect to a preference that's important to me - I'm fine with whatever DDL prefers.

The effects of Veritaserum are described in the OPs under set-up, which clearly state it's limitations. Any attempts at a loophole would be grounds for asking the host, not something to go off on a tangent discussing with other players. I am puzzled at why you are asking about it's effect on a specific player, unless it's meant to be a joke as by what I can ascertain from other's posts Glorf has a truth meta.

I don't see a point in this post in furthering town's goals, if anything it reminds mafia of a mechanic they might have forgotten about. It just wants to go off into pure speculation, you don't even bring up any good targets for use of it.

Baseless mechanics talk is a general scumtell for me so :

... or to be the LAST vote on a condemned player's lynch train at day end. If the lynched player has a Deathly Hallow, it'll go to whoever the last vote was.

PLAYER SALAD! Great catch, and an even greater image used. Took me a sec, at first I thought the women represented the accused players laughing at the accuser. Which was fun too.

To be honest, this whole mess had completely slipped my mind. It’s hard for me to know what to do here - do I refuse to answer and get lynched by a rabid Town or answer it and put a target on my back Night 1? Either way, I guess it suggests a short stay for me this game... :(
Refuse to answer. We won't jump on you.... unless you look suspicious for legitimate reasons. You're just another player in the game dude :nicenod:
Thank you but you’ll forgive me if I lack confidence in the ability of a number of players here to apply ‘legitimate reasoning’ when I appear to be an easy target. Don’t get me wrong - I intend to do my best for as long as I’m in the game. The one thing that I think would make this game truly great though would be if Master Sloonei was playing. In my estimation he’s right up there with Jay.

I'm a turnip, not a statistician. But I'll say there's an 8% chance this convo was duplicated into the thread for next-to-no benefit.
8% is pretty low. And you're probably right. I believe that Epi would have a bit more subtlety about it if this were a BTSC-spawned distancing setup... as in, he wouldn't point his finger to it himself, right away, if it were done falsely. He'd let someone else realize it, or at the very least, call it out much later as early proof.

I think I associate Dark Arts with Deathly Hallows as they are relatively both dark things. Or in my mind, both relate to the one who isn't to be named. The Deathly Hallows wouldn't exist without the dark arts I think.

It's like when I say scum. When I think of scum, I think both mafia and 3p (third party) are scum. Some sites like NF have taught me sometimes indies aren't scum.
Cool so I'm now 80% sure you slipped up.
I'm not suspicious of the 'slip', because when speedchuck explained that the Hallows going to the last voter was in the rules, I went to the Dark Arts section and looked, and went back to his post and realized the Hallows were a different thing. So the "relatively dark things" explanation is kosher to me.

Also, that reference to "the one who isn't to be named" might be pertinent. Maybe everyone should use that term instead of the V-word during this game.

Use it on Epi's statement to catch two baddies: Epi and Juliets :haha: Just an example of how to extend such a power, I guess. I think it would be really hard to beef it up past the 'alignment check' level, but we could try to craft some complex-logic statements that would reveal more.

I don't think we've forgotten anything. It's still a current thing. See Mega Man Mafia, the very last 'Job' game: I accuse Lunalee of Player Salad, and she ends up bad. Cute how she's accusing me of being bad for discussing game mechanics early on.

Player Salad is a bunch of names thrown together with a weak and/or unsubstantiated read on each one. It's apparently something baddies sometimes do, I guess in an attempt to seem more relevant and hunterly.

This is obviously a good idea, right? Any objections?

I am town.
No, that's an awful waste of a 1-shot ability to tell the truth, just to get the same info as a regular ability (Divination). But because you've started this, I also have to say

I am a town.

Or else I'd look scum by not following along with it.
Epignosis isn't going to say that. Will that make him look scum to you?
Dude knows me and bought me a rocking T-shit that I wore to work and nobody got. Fuck them. Rock on LC.
Well, I didn't think it was T-shit... ;) I tried to explain it to a 30-year-old extended family member, and he was like "Oh, I never really watched He-Man". Not cool.

I don't know how that would be a slip. They're two completely different things.

... unless you meant townslip.
No I mean did she scumslip. They're two completely different things. One of them you were talking about, the other one you weren't.
=.=

Yeah I don't get it.
Ok I'll walk you though it, because I love you.

Here you explain the Deathly Hallows mechanic. Which, since they're all locked behind secrets, the basic gist is "You get one if you kill the guys that have them or if you're the last vote on the guys that have one"

Here Owner says "Dark Arts" and not "Deathly Hallows". Her exact quote will be helpful in understanding my thought process so here:
Owner of a Lonely Heart wrote: Mon Oct 29, 2018 12:12 am
speedchuck wrote: Mon Oct 29, 2018 12:04 am :) what about me, owner? Give DH a break and flag me for a bit.
You knowing the intricacies of the Dark Arts stuff and sharing it could be an act to try to buy townie points. I remember reading the stuff about it but not nearly picking up enough about it to understand it all. Basically, if someone had or possessed Dark Arts abilities this game, they would probably read up on it or make sure they understood their abilities.

Technically, what you said is some form of mechanical-talk or a retelling of information, in which some of it is free to us. But it doesn't necessarily solve us the game or anything.

It's potenitally the kind of post meant to look like a person is being useful, but in reality, they aren't truly really adding to the thread.
"The intricacies of" - What's intricate about [SECRET] and "Keep what you kill"
"The Dark Arts Stuff" - if you've got Dark Arts on the mind and someone says Deathly Hallows, you might confuse the two. Freudian Slippage.
"I remember reading the stuff about it but not nearly picking up enough...." - [Secrets] and "Keep what you kill" doesn't strike me as hard to retain.

IDK thinking out loud, the best indicator of an actual slip here is conflating "Dark Arts" with "Deathly Hallows" because she had "Dark Arts" on the mind.
I think this has merit, the times when I have caught myself scum slipping it has been on minor things like this. By itself I wouldn't jump on this but that Owner has spent this whole phase tunneled on someone over a previous game adds to their rapsheet.

The funny thing with this game is we might get some magnificent ties. Because if you're on a townie lynch that goes through, your house looses 2 points. So especially on day 1 if I don't have a good scum read, I would rather be a single vote on someone who's not going to die.

[VOTE: Quin] aubergine, because he said some shit I didn't like earlier. He provided a token response to Epi's dig at juliets which just looked like "this is where I am supposed to interject with this here comment" instead of "this is a problem and I want to address it".
This is the post in question:

Lunalee wrote: Mon Oct 29, 2018 12:55 pm Oh, and just in case anyone wants to shove some truth serum down my throat, I'm town.
These posts from Lunalee all slightly pinged me, the mocking joke in response to TH, the preemptive excuse for voting off leading wagons, the overly long somewhat passive-aggressive post to say he's town and the fact that they prompted this JJJ wagon but only just joined it this late.

[VOTE: Lunalee] aubergine
Disagree about Owner. I don't think it was a scumslip, as I said before, I believe the mix-up because I did the same thing. Just not in a post. :haha:

The rising Turnip Head suspicion makes me look at the Luna-TH interaction with a more critical eye, and it could be teammate-distancing. Her comment on JJJ doesn't have the same feel to it, I don't get a distancing vibe there. I could see Luna-TH as w/w, but not really feeling the Luna/JJJ w/w. The "preemptive excuse" idea does have some merit as well.

Also dude, learn the vote tages. You can't be opening a "[ vote" without doing it right: "[ vote ]Lunalee[ /vote ]"

Speaking of that game, poutanko linked it as a game where you were scum, but when I looked, you were Independent. Poutanko gave you a Civ read, as I recall, based on that game having you as "scum who didn't tunnel this much". What do you think of that analysis? Also, are you tunneling?

Why Soneji?
He made a post at Long Con that I replied to earlier that looked scummy in its motivations. This also happened right after I threatened to lynch him for chronic not-showing-up-itis, so that also factors into my read.
My post was several hours after yours, this sounds like entrapment where just by actually playing I'm suspicious. I suspect Long Con for baseless mechanics talk, you described this as "pointing fingers at a townie for talking", when the fact that his talk was empty is what is suspicious to me.
Ok, excuse me, but enough of this. The issue I brought up has been discussed, acted upon, had mild accusations levelled, and has become a short, referenceable, public decision for a number of players. Despite obtuse claims to the contrary, the parts that only the host could answer were answered by the host, as was my intention, and clarification edits have been made in the Rules post.

So get a new suspicion, because the "baseless mechanics" accusation is more baseless and suspicious than me bringing up an actual issue.

Or basically, this whole if-then situation is particularly bad when both wagons are positioned on good players, which I feel like Colin knows this.
