There's a lot of gold to be mined in this thread.
I think your original comment was irrelevant.

I think Dom's comment about your comment was irrelevant.

I think your comment about Dom's comment about your comment was irrelevant.

Maybe I'm just not the skilled prospector you are, but all I can see is a bunch of manure with not a single fleck of yellow to be found.
What would constitute relevant content in this game of mafia?

You are just as bad as me if you think I am bad without elaboration.

Also I haven't looked at my role card yet. I'll do that when the game actually starts.

I'm interested in why MP is the self-proclaimed Mother Theresa this game, and is getting a pass for listing off civs.
Yellow: This is less believable to me in this game than it would be in most games because it has become trendy. The relevant reference is in an ongoing game so I am not obliged to expand, but I don't accept this at face value.

Orange: He threw shade at MP, but only indirectly via challenging positive reads of MP -- positive reads that I don't think actually existed in this thread. Those who've expressed any trust in MP haven't referenced his civilian reads as the reason.
I think your yellow point is valid, but I think you're misinterpreting the orange point. Scotty called MP the self-proclaimed Mother Theresa; he didn't say that others were calling him that good. He may have said he's getting a pass for listing civs, but he didn't say he's getting brownie points from other people. For example, I would put MP in the gray were I to make a rainbow list.

In any case, you seem only to have meaningfully engaged with MM, Blooper, JJJ, MP, and Sloonei. I'm curious why in particular you mentioned Blooper and Sloonei: you didn't quote any of their content and offered only very short questions. Why them over, say, me or sig or Epi?

Because I remembered seeing you. I didn't know if I had seen bloops this game, or if I was confusing games in my head.

Sig I remember seeing. As far as I did read, his opinion on PoE is similar to mine and I don't know how I feel about that.

I didn't know Epi was here.

I didn't quote Sloonei because I had no need to. The short posts Sloon provided had no questionable meat, so the question I asked followed suit.

What do you think of Sloon, Epi and Sig Boomslang?

By "engaged," I meant that he mentioned you with his "Someone engage with me so I can form reads or I'll eat Marmot's prized turnip." It's not much, but it's at least using your name in a post.
DrWilgy wrote:

As I've said previously, I read Sloon as town.
Epi has given me nothing to go on because of the gimmick. I leave it to others more acquainted with his meta to determine if that's good or bad.
Sig doesn't have much, but I like his point about Dom and think his POE reasoning is valid. Leaning town.

Orange: He threw shade at MP, but only indirectly via challenging positive reads of MP -- positive reads that I don't think actually existed in this thread. Those who've expressed any trust in MP haven't referenced his civilian reads as the reason.

You are just as bad as me if you think I am bad without elaboration.

Also I haven't looked at my role card yet. I'll do that when the game actually starts.

:suspish:

And where are you getting that impression about me? Do you think my behavior has been suspicious? If so, what's your beef with me, man?
You made a series of posts back in 1996 (aka the first few pages of this game) where you expressed your lack of confidence in calling out people for being bad so you instead would resort to calling people good.

Anyone can call anyone good. You may be an idiot savant with calling people good correctly more often, but this isn't alignment indicative and I feel like it's an easy cop out for scum hunting.

Not to say you aren't scumhunting, but that pinged me hard.
MP pointed this out earlier. Scotty's all over the place here. The yellow text represents a caveat which absolves MP of the criticism that follows in the orange text. The orange text is assertive though. There's a "hard ping" voiced but it is disqualified by the step-back accompanying yellow text.

Two words: Tofu Boy.
Is that supposed to be directed at me?
Not at all. It's a reference to the Super Meat Boy game in which I was a civ with the win condition of getting lynched. It was the perfect role for me, because I seem to be one of the biggest shade magnets on this site. It's easy for MP to throw a gut baddie read at me on Day 0 because baddie reads always seem to stick on me :/

Also I like how Boom and Mp posted something about JJJ not giving enough content and the the next thing is JJJ's retelling of Walden.
Whereas Batman is the hero this city deserves but doesn't need right now, JJJ is the philosopher this thread deserves but doesn't believe right now.

I disliked Boom's entrance but his last little post has me feeling better about him.
Scotty opened with an accusation of me, but it's not something he really pursued with much fervor. This above post represents the only example of follow-up, and it's a typical Scotty metaphor which doesn't say anything.

Congratulations Jay, you've broken down my Day 0 as a neutral party. It was an interesting experiment, because yes, I did depart from my normal meta. Except did I really? I haven't committed to voting anyone, and my normal day 1 is going to go after low posters. Nothing new here.
This is less believable to me in this game than it would be in most games because it has become trendy
Oh, has it? I did this in mad max and don't remember anyone doing it recently before that. But I'll be a trendsetter, sure.
I know I can't prove it, but I don't really care to impress you explicitly. Anyway, I looked at my role at the start of Day 1 and can keep this day 0 in my back pocket.

Just skimming through, I have vague notions that MP is probably good. Ironically, I have liked INH's posts- they've had a nice fluidity and logical mindset. But I can't help but think he's being safe with his points---well guarded and fleshed out so as to say "look at me, world! I'm a newspaper and the headline is Me"

Far more interested in bwt, who i have had a hand in killing or voting for in the first day/might cycle several times now. He had some thorough posts up until that post where he posted his strongest convictions which turned out to have as much verve as Gigli. Then he dropped off the face of the earth.

Since votes are changeable, I'm voting there for now. Will see if he comes back in to post stuff about riffraff.

As for my first post of you being bad, JJJ? Meh. Gut read off of an impartial viewer if the first few pages told me you were trying too hard but not hard enough. Wallflowerjng, for jay standards. Which is remarkably saying a lot.

Another gut baddie is Sloonei, who seems to be hiding behind some grumpy, Epi-like persona.

MovingPictures07 wrote:Well, I've OT talked enough.

Although recently I've uncovered that POE naturally describes my recently developed playstyle because I much more easily find town reads than I do baddie reads, I've never formally used POE before.

I'll be using POE exclusively this game, and I'd like to approach it both as an individual (with my rainbow lists like I usually do) but as a group this time.

Who wants to join me? :mafia:
tbh what does this mean tbh
Stated as simply as possible, POE ("process of elimination") takes the typical strategy of a town player (to hunt for members of the mafia) and flips it on its head (instead hunt for fellow townies).

The theory behind POE is that town can win due to the fact that it has a majority, and if members of the town can collectively use POE to clear enough of each other from consideration of being mafia, then the only players that haven't been cleared are the mafia.

A player can approach POE on an individual level, like I've usually been doing more so these days in the beginning of the game when I state "here are 5 town reads", etc., and then when it comes time to vote I just vote among the players I haven't found any reason to call town.

Multiple players can approach POE on a group level with specific intent of using POE (something I have not yet participated in), and assuming those players can town-clear each other, they will then work with each other collectively to cross-examine each other's town reads to develop a consensus suspect pool. For example, if there are 10 players, and I (as Player #1) have town reads on Players #3, 5, 7, and 8, and Players #3 and #5 who also are using POE have town reads on Players #2, 4, 5, and 9, then that leaves a consensus suspect pool of only Players #6 and #10, since neither of those players are being town read by any of the players utilizing POE. All of the POE-utilizing players would then decide on either #6 or #10 for their votes.
Ah so basically a town circle?

NO NO NO ANNNNNND NO!

This is perhaps one of my least favorite methods of hunting mafia whether it is winning dead or alive or not. Mainly since if one mafia gets in the town circle aka 100% cleared we will listen to them buddy buddy, then they can screw up the whole game. I've seen it happen quite a few times so we should be very wary if we're going to employ this strategy.

So while it can work I don't think we should put to much stock in POE to early in the game.
That's why you never listen to anyone 100%, always question even those cleared by the POE, and continually re-assess every read, including town reads. Sounds to me your experiences are soured by players not using the method effectively, not the method itself. ;)

That is true, I also noticed Dom hasn't addressed my point from early on?

Anyway off to class I go. :| :(

in theme-related news, I just listened to Lift Your Skinny Fists... for the first time, and I quite liked it.

Felt along the same vein as Silver Mt. Zion.

I do now want to go back and decipher every random audio clip that was interspersed alongside the music. This could be like when I got heavily into deciphering Boards of Canada's Geogaddi, which went from being a nice chill album to something I can't listen to without getting a little bit spooked.

This trio of posts from birdwithteeth intrigues me:

JJJ and MP, are you teammates again?
I don't use POE myself that much if at all, but I do find it an interesting strategy and, while not perfect, can be effective in certain situations.

What makes you think they're teammates? Just because they have similar feelings on certain players, albeit with slight disagreements on other opinions? Because I have null reads on both so far.
birdwithteeth11 wrote:
DrWilgy wrote:Linki @MP - idk. I think it's the PoE discussion along with your mannerisms. Declaring PoE as your playstyle gives you a means to stick to something and have at least have that method of play be true. Your mannerisms make it hard to read you in general.
While I can see the argument for the first part, I disagree very much with the bolded. Since I started playing mafia, I think MP's mannerisms have changed considerably. I used to be able to tell much more quickly in games if he was civ or bad. But I think he has evolved and adapted well enough that he's become a much more difficult read, regardless of playstyle and mannerisms.

That being said, there are some thing he is more likely to do if he is civ vs. bad and vice-versa... ;) :feb:
birdwithteeth11 wrote:
DrWilgy wrote:That's exactly what a baddie would say.

Eh, I guess it was the mannerisms were just subject of my thoughts at the moment, but you are correct. This defined PoE playstyle is what has my feathers rustled. Your argument that it produces content doesn't settle my stomachache either as I know you have the potential to out tons of posts as a baddie just as you do while civvie.
Sooooo....you feel his defined playstyle and him stating so bothers you, but then say it isn't indicative-alignment right afterwards?

I thought you were trying to make your mind up on something. Are you sure you aren't just trying to stir the pot early on?
All three posts are responses to DrWilgy about MP. In all three he is either vaguely defensive of MP or vaguely critical of Wilgy, or both. BWT has also been very wishy-washy with regards to Edgar Allan Poe all game long with posts like this one where he expresses skepticism of the strategy but does not condemn it or MP at all.
birdwithteeth, how are you reading Wilgy right now? How are you reading MP? What compelled you to respond to these posts in this way?

Others, how do you feel about these posts?

This is our break down, now I haven't read enough to have a read on Boom or Scotty, but if A-person/Lorab/myself is being pursued to get lynched I would look very closely at whoever is trying to set up our lynches since there is no evidence one way or another and lynching a low poster on day one when we already have 15 pages is a good place to throw a day 1 vote if you're mafia.
I find myself agreeing with you and thinking you're civ which means you're probably mafia.

Right? Isn't how that works?
No it means I haven't had the chance to stick my foot in my mouth, I'm a civ, or I've gotten better in my absence. Maybe college improved my Uni skills as well as my drinking skills. :noble:

never thought about it.
tbh I dont' reall;y think about how people read me.

Why didn't you answer my question?

That is true, I also noticed Dom hasn't addressed my point from early on?

Anyway off to class I go. :| :(
Your post about why I 'defended' MP?
I think I answered it here. I didn't answer you directly, but I was criticized for doing the same thing to Scotty, so I thought I'd cover two eggs with one hammer dude.
Okay thanks Dom, I must have missed that. What do you think of JJJ right now?

it's almost like GTH reads can be pretty stupid early on in the game.
What sort of things do you think a typical baddie might do on Day 1?
Play like they usually would as a civilian, except while townreading their own teammates, explicitly or otherwise.

Comments about votes, nightkills, and other game mechanics.

Semantics about word choice and knee-jerk defensiveness, less so.

It's a bunch of white noise, and I'm trying to cut through it.

So is there anything in particular you are looking out for today? Loosely justified town reads, perhaps?
