That was the first book I ever read like that; where a sci fi book is written as if the context is familiar to the audience. I loved that feeling of immersion, but it is not an easy book in general.

I delayed reading Dune for years because the long glossary at the end gave me in the impression that the author had created something that needed far too much explaining.

And, to be honest, he did. My biggest criticism of Herbert is that, even when he's trying to navigate around it, he's an explainer.

But certain literary sins can be forgiven when the storytelling is good.

I recommend Dune, but not for the reasons so many have recommended it (i.e., all the Messianic and metaphoric hooplah)- I liked it because it was a damn good story, one that took its time setting things up only to get rolling in a fast-paced way after the first hundred pages or so. Yes, the first third of the book is politics, but after that, damn.
