Re: Rainbow Album Rankings
People who judge others for their music tastes are totally silly, and frankly I think many music enthusiasts restrict themselves because they want to be perceived a certain way instead of simply respecting their own whims.
I've heard an absolute pile of music from a pile of genres, and I can still get excited to hear my favorite Taylor Swift song.
No tastes are bad tastes. We like what we like!

Re: Rainbow Album Rankings
Crowded House/Split Enz, the former being the greatest pop band of all time (if my opinion was gospel). Also including Neil Finn solo albums and Finn Brothers albums. I am less familiar with Tim Finn's solo work.
Together Alone (Crowded House) - one of only two albums I would consider a candidate to be called my favorite album in all of music
Time on Earth (Crowded House)
Woodface (Crowded House)
True Colours (Split Enz)
One Nil (Neil Finn)
Intriguer (Crowded House)
Everyone Is Here (Finn Brothers)
Time and Tide (Split Enz)
Temple of Low Men (Crowded House)
Crowded House (Crowded House)
Try Whistling This (Neil Finn)
Conflicting Emotions (Split Enz)
Frenzy (Split Enz)
Waiata/Corroboree (Split Enz)
Dizzy Heights (Neil Finn)
Mental Notes (Split Enz)
See Ya 'Round (Split Enz)
Dizrythmia (Split Enz)
Second Thoughts (Split Enz)
Finn Brothers (Finn Brothers)

Re: Rainbow Album Rankings
Great story, MP. I feel like I know you, Daisy, and Epi a little better than before after having read it. Thanks for sharing.
I also have a [much much much less meaningful] story about Sigur Rós.
The first album of theirs that I heard was ( ). And for about a year or two, I hated it. It had one of my lowest RYM ratings, and I wrote a review dubbing it the most boring thing I had ever heard in my life. This was a disappointment to me, because prior to listening to them I had anticipated liking them a lot. They were held in high regard by people with similar tastes to my own, and the general concept of the band sounded very interesting. It was because of those initial expectations that I continued listening even though I found it so miserably boring, like I was trying to force myself to like it more. It wasn't happening though, at least not until I branched out to Ágætis byrjun. There was very distinct moment when my perspective of Sigur Rós completely changed, and I talked about it a while back in a list I made for my favorite songs ever in an entry for "Viðrar vel til loftárása":

It's corny, but it's true. Ever since then, I suddenly loved nearly everything in their discography -- including the untitled album I had previously hated so much. It was like I had unlocked a secret level in a video game or something. :PJaggedJimmyJay wrote:I needed to spend a lot of time and energy towards the effort of making Sigur Rós enjoyable. The pursuit might be called wasteful and pointless by many, understandably, but for a song as pleasurable as Viðrar vel til loftárása I am extremely glad I did it. The piano melody alone is enough to make this song a nice listen, but it's the buildup to and arrival at one of the most orgasmic climaxes I know of that makes this song so great. The turning point for my perception of Sigur Rós came on an airplane, as I listened to Viðrar vel til loftárása on my ipod. I was staring out the window, only half awake. The timing and movement of the aircraft were perfect so that at the very moment the song's climax came to my ears, the sun appeared within my view. My spine is still recovering from the quake of shivers.

Re: Rainbow Album Rankings
I think "Ísjaki" is the remarkable high of Kveikur, it's probably my second favorite track of theirs behind only "Viðrar vel til loftárása". Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust feels like a bloated caricature of Sigur Rós to me. "Ára Bátur" for example seems to follow the most typical Sigur Rós formula and it actually makes me laugh.

Yeah I meant I couldn't load any pages that featured the word with the umlaut to copy. My wi-fi is basically a 28k modem right now.
Somehow The Syndicate is the only site that is consistently loading cleanly.

Now for the band that so many people call the fathers of progressive metal even though I don't think any of their albums are remotely progressive metal save maybe for 1-2. They're still old favorites of mine.

Re: Rainbow Album Rankings
I think Ten Years Gone is the best LZ song, so there's that. I absolutely love Down by the Seaside and Night Flight, those feature some of Plant's best lyrics ever. Sick Again is a moment of good heavy LZ. I could do without Boogie With Stu. I really think 90% of the album is great, and that's hard to manage with a double album.

Re: Rainbow Album Rankings
Generally, I think Led Zeppelin music gets worse as it gets heavier. Not always, but usually. That's why I don't care as much for LZ1 and LZ2. They're at their best when they show off their capacity for diversity in songwriting. PG and HOTH are the best in that regard by far, in my opinion.

Re: Rainbow Album Rankings
The White Album is very love/hate for most people. For me, it's the only Beatles album I didn't give at least a decent rating (I'd classify that as 3.0 or better).
I only did the albums starting in 1964 because I never bothered listening to the earlier ones.

No, I actually missed the part in your original post where you meant for everyone to follow with the artist you named. My bad.MovingPictures07 wrote:You think Led Zeppelin albums are more recognizable than Bowie?
I'm fine with doing multiple artists at a time though, so let me mull over that and I'll provide my Led Zep rankings in accordance with my rainbow system above. Warning: My list is likely to be controversial, since I like Bowie a lot more than Led Zep.

David Bowie:
Low
Hunky Dory
"Heroes"
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
Alladin Sane
Station to Station
Black Star
Heathen
The Next Day
That's all I have heard.

I'll do some for bands that I think most would recognize:
Led Zeppelin
Physical Graffiti
Houses of the Holy
Led Zeppelin III
Led Zeppelin [IV]
Presence
In Through the Out Door
Led Zeppelin II
Led Zeppelin
Coda
Note -- bad colors don't necessarily mean I dislike the albums. I'm just using the spectrum more completely.
