I'll also be in Bucharest until Tuesday, but I'll be able to pop in at least once a day, maybe just not chat so much about movies. Please don't lynch me either.
Bucharest, by the way, is a European capital where, at a movie theater in its city centre, I could not see Blackhat because I was the only one who showed up there wanting to see it.

I'm home from work sick again today but I have to shimmy away for the landlord to show a prospective buyer the unit.
I'll have the Day 1 post up by 6pm EST. After that, we'll be on a more regular schedule. Thank you for your patience, and for joining in on the discussion. It should be a real fun time.
Remember to poke me with any questions and to poke Epi with any concerns. Have a wonderful day.

Re: [Day 1]: Film Directors.

Day 1: A Piece of Cake.
There were so many directors to learn about! How would they make it through all of them? Would they discuss the use of color in films like Punch Drunk Love? What about the use of light in the 1932 version of Scarface? Or the use of sound in Dassin's Naked City? It was an almost overwhelming ordeal.
Someone walked forward into profile. A corpulent, yet dignified gentleman. He cleared his throat.
"For me, the cinema is not a slice of life, but a piece of cake," he said.
He pointed to a trunk.
"I believe in that trunk may lie a corpse of dubious origin," he said in a mid-Atlantic accent.
"Well, this got real quick," said Metalmarsh.
"No one hurt a kitty, did they?" asked A Person.
He said: "For me, the cinema is not a slice of life, but a piece of cake."
It is now Day 1. You have 48 hours to determine who put the junk in the trunk.

I like the use of color in Chris Nolan's Memento. Very blue palette for the bulk of the film, and more yellow for the flashbacks. It gives it a nice consistent feel that is almost subconscious to the viewer.

I like using colour palettes as well, but man it has GOT to be subtle, or at least not garish and distracting. Peter Jackson did some wonderful work with colour tinting in the LOTR trilogy, for instance. It was noticeable, but added such an otherworldly feel to everything. I wasn't a fan of Soderbergh's blue/red/yellow work in Traffic, though. It was just so THERE, I found myself distracted. Maybe it's my own problem, but such things are important.thellama73 wrote:I like the use of color in Chris Nolan's Memento. Re: [Day 1]: Film Directors.
I completely agree with you. There was some movie I was watching (I forget which one, I want to say Swordfish or something like that) where everything was SO YELLOW it was terrible and distracting. I think you can get away with a little more of it in an artier film like Memento, but it can easily be taken too far.timmer wrote:I like using colour palettes as well, but man it has GOT to be subtle, or at least not garish and distracting. And I meant to say this during Day 0 but was too distracted by the champions game: I am HAPPILY BLOWN AWAY by the cinematic knowledge on display in this game. Obviously I expected the host to bring it, but man, you guys are dropping names I never expected people to know outside of the film websites I frequent elsewhere! And shit, I had to look up two of the names on Vompatti's list! Basically, it's not that I expected you guys to have no film knowledge, and I knew some of you were cineastes, but I didn't know so MANY of you were. It makes a guy like me feel at home

Re: [Day 1]: Film Directors.
Some question for Mongoose:
Kubrick can "reshoot a day period" once in the game. Does that he reverses a day, annulling the lynch, or just simply that we get two day periods in a row?
The Duplass, Wachowskis and Emmerich seem to not have any powers? Is this true?
Uwe Boll - what does "lock the thread" mean, exactly?
Thanks, and items of interest to throw out there:
The Coens Bros have been picked to lead this year's Cannes jury!
Also, in light of Welles being in this game, his unfinished film The Other Side of the Wind, starring Peter Bogdanovich, Dennis Hopper, John Huston and featuring all kinds of filmmakers like Claude Chabrol has actually now been completed and will screen at Cannes in May on Welles' 100th birthday!!!

In your face colours etc. can work, if it matches the rest of the film, which it totally does in The Matrix (one of my fave films of all time, sequels notwithstanding)! I think I've seen it over twenty times, lol.Long Con wrote:

Probably not the one you're talking about, but the only recent movie with intentionally sickening use of yellow (actually, pretty much the whole piss palette) I can remember is Enemy - it even gets much of its flak for this particular aspect, but I personally feel the whole movie (thus, even the use of color) is done in a very smart way.thellama73 wrote:

I'm not very good at judging visual aspects, usually. I pretty much scratch my head every year with the Oscar nominations for Cinematography and especially Art Direction, except if one movie really stands out.

So OMG, it starts. Now that it started, I want to thank Alison for my role and, of course, the Academy...
I knew it was Hitch, but the quote "For me, the cinema is not a slice of life, but a piece of cake" made me think of Wes Anderson, but Alison cut him out of the picture as well.

Re: [Day 1]: Film Directors.
We could lynch someone based on a wide variety of things. We could randomize, we could self-vote, we could analyze playstyle up to this point, we could go for no posters, high posters, or people we have personal grudges against outside of mafia. There are many options. I have a couple of thoughts already, but I have been lynched before for "pushing an early day 1 lynch" so I want to make sure people are cool with it before I start tossing out names.Long Con wrote:What could we lynch someone based on? I generally think it is less productive for everyone to roll in five minutes before the lynch and say "no time to catch up, voting so and so."

Re: [Day 1]: Film Directors.
I dunno, waiting until 10 minutes before deadline worked real well in the Champions game.thellama73 wrote:Serious question: Who wants to discuss lynch possibilities now, and who wants to wait until several hours before the vote ends?

I think people should jet put lynch ideas out there when they think their idea is a good one?
My siggie.

It seems obvious, but just to be clear... Mongoose=Alison?Ricochet wrote:So OMG, it starts.

We could all abstain from this lynch and let Metalmarsh lynch himself entirely by his own hand.

If I ever make a role based on Llama, it will be an Indy. The win conditions will be "Lead as many lynches as possible (first vote for the lynched) without being lynched for it yourself. Extra Credit if the people you lynch are low posters".
Llama loves lynching people just for the pure joy of it.

It's sort of the whole point of mafia, isn't it?

You're not wrong though.

Kubrick's role - more annulment in scope.timmer wrote:Some question for Mongoose:
Kubrick can "reshoot a day period" once in the game. Does that he reverses a day, annulling the lynch, or just simply that we get two day periods in a row?
The Duplass, Wachowskis and Emmerich seem to not have any powers? Is this true?
Uwe Boll - what does "lock the thread" mean, exactly?
Thanks, and items of interest to throw out there:
The Coens Bros have been picked to lead this year's Cannes jury!![]()
Also, in light of Welles being in this game, his unfinished film The Other Side of the Wind, starring Peter Bogdanovich, Dennis Hopper, John Huston and featuring all kinds of filmmakers like Claude Chabrol has actually now been completed and will screen at Cannes in May on Welles' 100th birthday!!!
True, they do not have any powers, per se.
Lock the thread, meaning no one can post for a period of time.
I was hearing about Jason Segel playing David Foster Wallace at Sundance and that was very intriguing. And also a new Duplass Bros series with 10 episodes. So stoked.

Re: [Day 1]: Film Directors.
Probably not the one you're talking about, but the only recent movie with intentionally sickening use of yellow (actually, pretty much the whole piss palette) I can remember is Enemy - it even gets much of its flak for this particular aspect, but I personally feel the whole movie (thus, even the use of color) is done in a very smart way./quote]
I loved Enemy's use of color, it was very controlled.
