Synphony 2025

Another year, another Synphony! For those who are new, a walrus is a music event where a host sets a series of category prompts and you, the submitter, send the host a song for each prompt that you feel fits it best. Generally speaking, best practice is to send a song you like but also hope the host will enjoy. In a later post, I offer some hints toward my tastes.

Let's get right to it!

Categories

Category 1: The New Day
You wake up and this is the song that gets you out of bed. It prepares you for another day. It tells you that something new is possible and in your reach. It could be the small hope that gets you through the next few hours, or it could be something much bigger, a sign of a whole new stage in your life. What song signals a new beginning for you?

Category 2: The Cut
It’s not every day that a song can knock you off balance. Somehow, your defenses are meaningless, and you’re left an emotional mess afterward. It could be existential dread, abject misery, complete and total elation… The extreme is up to you. It just has to be an extreme. What song cuts through you to the core?

Category: 3: The Intensity
Focus. Your attention narrows to a pinpoint, and all you know is the music and the challenge before you. It could be rage. It could be adrenaline. It could be something that blocks out the world and lets you dedicate every morsel of energy toward your task. What song represents this laser-focused intensity?

Category 4: The Wildcard
This category consistently gets me a big influx of new songs that hold my attention and broaden my horizons. Perhaps there’s a song that you feel would have fit one of the other categories but it just barely didn’t make the cut. Maybe you’ve had an earworm for the past couple weeks. Possibly there’s a song you think would speak to me in some way, and you really want me to hear it. What song do you want to send me, the host, specifically?

Category 5: The Non-English Flavour
I listen to quite a bit of non-English music and am always on the lookout for more. My only condition for this category is that the song is not in English. Instrumentals, while not disqualified, would not be in the spirit of the category. What non-English song has entranced you recently?

Category 6: The Sudden Contender
Sometimes you aren’t paying close attention or even trying to find something new, but something new certainly found you. What song came out of nowhere and immediately catapulted itself into your favourites?

Category 7: The Click
Music can be more than just a bunch of neat sounds you like to hear occasionally. It can be meaningful. It can change things. It can make you understand. You were uncertain, and now the pieces have been put together. With each note, you know a little more than you did before. What song made a situation “click” for you?

Category 8: The Future
You have an idea in your head of what your life could be. Maybe it’s an image that’s idyllic, a dream of what could be if things were different. Maybe you harbor resentment about what was taken from you, an opportunity you missed out on. Whether positive or negative, you have feelings about the tomorrows you might have and the tomorrows you’ll never experience. What song speaks to you of the implacable future?

Scoring

I score from between 0 -> 10. I tend to use the full range possible and also decimals to a single point (e.g., 7.4).

Scores can go above 10 if there are multiple songs that are at the max score. (This is rare.)

I generally score within a local context; what this means is that a 10 is not the best song ever, miles apart from all other music. It just means it’s the best song of the category and that I really, really liked it and it made me feel something. I have heard 10s before that I never listened to again, and I’ve heard 7s that entered my daily rotation.

I don’t approach scoring from a technical aspect, unless the music is poorly structured or bad quality. I rely heavily on vibes, meaning, and how the song lands in the moment. This adds an element of randomness to scoring that can make assumptions a little risky. I listen to each song at least twice.

Songs that I know well are unlikely to win any category unless I am absolutely certain the submitter had no way of knowing I like it and there aren’t other stand-outs. I don’t expect you to know what I’ve listened to, but if you know me and you know what you’re about to submit is a song I already like… well… maybe don’t.

My Tastes

My tastes are difficult to cater to. There are very few who can reliably do so. I can throw some genres your way, but there’s a good chance that sending me a typical song from them will do poorly. Sorry. My playlists below can help, and if you’ve attended previous walruses of mine, you’ll likely know there are certain sounds/rhythms/sentiments that do well with me.

I strongly prefer people send songs they love and also hope I’ll enjoy rather than try to create The Perfect Submission. Try to avoid submitting songs over 7 minutes long unless you’re really sure/hopeful I’ll like it. I also tend to not enjoy live recordings. Submit them at your peril.

This first playlist includes all the songs from Synphony 2024 that either won or piqued my interest for a while after the walrus.

This second playlist includes my top 100 songs from my 2024 Spotify Wrapped. I’m a little iffy on the placement of the top songs because many were at the top of my auditions playlist for months, so they got extra unintentional plays and weren’t actually my top played or favourites. Still, it’s a good list of the songs I spent the most time listening to in 2024.

And finally, like last year, I maintained a collection of my top 10 songs every month. Here is an album of those: https://imgur.com/a/CylHeBF

Submissions + Deadline

Submissions close on January 31 at 11:59 PM PST. This would be 8:59 AM on February 1 for most Europeans. I will send two mass-tag reminders: one after two weeks, and then another three days before the deadline.

You can send submissions to me here via the Syndicate by Private Message (click here) or via Discord DM (_syn, but you can also find me via the sidebar in the Syndicate Walrus server; my DMs are open).

If you need an invite link to the Discord server, here is one: https://discord.gg/HgVAjpHNmA

Please send YouTube or Bandcamp links. The bot cannot play Spotify or other streaming services. It would be great if you removed any embeds for your links as well so I can quickly transfer them to my spreadsheet. On Discord, you can enclose each link in < > or just remove the embeds afterward by clicking the little x that appears at the top right when you hover over your message. Here on the Syndicate, you can do so by enclosing each link in URL tags (code provided below).

I am accepting multiple submissions. Please let me know if you want a pseudonym used, otherwise I’ll just number them (e.g., Syn 1, Syn 2). However, I reserve the right to close multi-subs or discard them afterward if I receive a lot of unique submissions. I don’t expect that to happen, but just in case.

Handy code for submitting here on the Syndicate (replace “link” with your song URL):

Spoiler: show

Code: Select all

1. [url=link]Category 1[/url]
2. [url=link]Category 2[/url]
3. [url=link]Category 3[/url]
4. [url=link]Category 4[/url]
5. [url=link]Category 5[/url]
6. [url=link]Category 6[/url]
7. [url=link]Category 7[/url]
8. [url=link]Category 8[/url]

Reveals

Reveals will be on Saturdays or Sundays. I will run a poll for the final submitters after the deadline. I would like to start reveals mid-February (15th or 16th) but this may change.

The time of reveals will likely be at 12:00 PM PST / 9:00 PM CET. Maybe a bit earlier if there are a lot of submissions or if there’s enough demand for it.

I try to make sure reveals are finished after around two hours so Europeans can go to bed before midnight. To make sure I can do that, some number of the lowest rated songs of each category may be skipped after a minute or so. I will let you know before reveals start what to expect on this front. I don’t like doing this overly much, but I also really want to be mindful of everyone’s time.

Thank you for reading! If you have any questions, just ping me and I’ll do my best to answer.
