Hmm, that show is on a Wednesday, bea! I'm scareded to go to concerts on work nights, so I might miss it unless you insist that it really is incredibly super awesome.
nijuukyugou wrote:What was your favorite high school subject? Least favorite? Probably literature and economics!

What was your favorite book you were forced to read as a kid/teenager? All of them!

No but really, Huckleberry Finn might be the best 'literature' book I've ever read. I also thoroughly enjoyed Of Mice and Men and Heart of Darkness, and I'm sure there are others I'm not remembering right now.

Favorite teacher and why? Dr. Carroll and Mr. Stewart (my high school economics and literature teachers). They taught because teaching was their bliss. Dr. Carroll was a college professor who decided high school was more fun, for example. They made their subjects seem even more fascinating and worthwhile than they already were, and helped me think more deeply and believe in myself more than I would have without them.

Best beer ever? Worst? Can I pick a few? I love anything by Three Floyds Brewery. I also just had a Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout that blew my mind. In a village called Bamsberg in south-central Germany you can get 10 of the best beers you'll ever drink within about a 3-mile radius, and if you do them all in 1 day you get a Beer Diploma. Still my proudest academic achievement. Also any Czech black or dark beer tends to be very good.

For worst, anything in the Bud Light family, increasing in horribleness as the price per unit of alcohol falls. Natty Ice invariably makes me puke, Natty Light makes me want to quit beer, and Bud Light makes me mourn our once great country's fall from grace. This is kind of weird since I don't mind Miller or Coors, for example. I once had a Murphy's that was really bad, too.

Worst job you've ever had? Working as a waiter at a golf club in Cincinnati. My boss was about 5'2" and hated me because I'm 6'3". He yelled at me all the time and would do things like have me move all the chairs in the dining room to one corner of the room, then tell me to put them back where they were.

Favorite swear word? Bollocks! I have it on a t-shirt from an Irish rock concert.

Favorite dessert? Black raspberry chip ice cream. But I wouldn't say no to a nice cheesecake with crumbly crust either. Or a peach cobbler.
Wow good questions, Ninja! I thought everything had been asked already haha. Sorry I didn't really answer any of your questions, since I picked multiple for every favorite you asked.

Linki: Feeding animals, wheee! :lorab: I am definitely going. If you are in Cleveburg again sometime, we MUST  together.

Rusty - they took a year hiatus but appear to be back. I wouldn't go if you feel like you might miss work - do check them out on youtube or whatever and decide for yourself!

also - Great Lakes Beer is a gift from heaven. I miss the Elliot Ness so much. :sigh:

Great Lakes makes many fine beers. Elliot Ness is particularly good, but I have a certain fondness for Conway's Irish Ale.

Yes - Conway's is awesome too. I love Irish Ales to begin with. Old World's Irish read out here in PHX is my current fav Irish Ale though. Nostarafu during halloween time is good too!

Rusty - favorite kind of "ethnic food"?
Do you like comics? If so, what kinds?
Have you been to the main branch of CPL yet? They have a super cool reading park.
Why can't I quit asking you questions about Cleveland?

Thanks, bea! I will.

That's out right now! It's their spring one, right? I've been thinking of trying it.

I like some of Great Lakes's brews, but many of them have just a tad too much alcohol flavor for me. Please don't hate me! I know people feel very strongly about their Great Lakes, especially 'round here.
bea wrote:Yes - Conway's is awesome too. I love Irish Ales to begin with. Old World's Irish read out here in PHX is my current fav Irish Ale though. Nostarafu during halloween time is good too!

Rusty - favorite kind of "ethnic food"? Hmm! All of them? I suppose probably Mexican and Indian, but Cleveburg has some really good Lebanese, Mediterranean, and Thai, and I love all of those. It really depends on my mood.
Do you like comics? If so, what kinds? I've liked the ones I've read, but I haven't read too many. I think the last one I read was a Swedish one about a detective in sort of a high-tech version of old-time London. Comic books are a cool form of artistic expression because they combine art and storytelling, and some of them have just mindblowing plots.
Have you been to the main branch of CPL yet? They have a super cool reading park. Yeah! I used to walk by there to and from work every day. Mostly it's been too cold for the reading park, but I was around for their semiannual book sale in the fall and loved that. My girlfriend likes to study in the library.
Why can't I quit asking you questions about Cleveland? I don't know how to answer this one! Stumped. :omg:

Let's roll!

1) I did study biology (as well as music) at Centre College in Danville, KY. While there, my focus was pretty heavily into ecology and conservation biology, things like invasive species and human effects on ecosystems. I then went to the University of Illinois for crop science, which basically concerns how to make food plants harder, better, faster, and stronger. The lab and academic environment weren't doing it for me, though, so now I'm studying professional writing at the University of Cincinnati in the hopes of becoming a science writer.

2) I go there fairly often, but I'm still going to say Gatlinburg/the Smoky Mountains. Nothing like getting lost in the woods for a day.

3) London. Lived there for a semester in college and completely fell in love with the city. Being able to walk/take the tube everywhere and see cool concerts practically every night was incredible.

4) Man, MP tends to be a pretty straight shooter everywhere but in Mafia :P I do remember one time he abused his employee parking privileges downtown so we had a good space to park for a concert, I believe Anamanaguchi... that's about it, lol.

5) Halloween. All the sense of weird traditions and overeating without (most of) the stress!

6) I'd love to go to the Galapagos Islands before they get completely ruined... I want to follow in the footsteps of Darwin and ride a giant tortoise.

7) Dream Theater. Can't believe I still haven't seen them, but I'm sure they'd be absolutely bonkers.

8) Acker is in a weird place; one of our guitarists just started a job with stupid hours that prevent him from making most shows, and the other had a bunch of work/life plans fall through and is figuring stuff out. But our vinyl is currently being pressed! So we'll see what the future brings.

9) Mothertrucking Moon colonist. But barring that, I think I'd like to become the editor-in-chief of a large popular science or general news magazine. I want to help the public see what's going on in the fields of science and technology and understand the implications, not simply accept or be scared of them.

10) Not quite yet :P

Either macaroni and cheese, the creamier and more artery-clogging the better, or the Taco Bell quesarito.

I'm actually in a couple bands at the moment, playing cello in both. My more active one, in Cincinnati, is called Near Earth Objects, and we just released a YouTube video for one of our new tracks.

My old band, based in Illinois, is called Acker, and although we're on a bit of a hiatus now, we just released a new full-length that we're pressing to vinyl. You can hear it on Bandcamp.

Musical influences are... eclectic. You have Sockface to thank for that; he singlehandedly got me into prog and other interesting stuff. Favorite band of all time is the Mahavishnu Orchestra, but lately been into both heavy stuff like Giant Squid and Deafheaven and acoustic stuff like Sun Kil Moon and Nana Grizol.

1) Plymouth Prowler. Ten-year-old me, playing Cruisin' USA, thought that was the dopest ish, and I still do.

2) Uh, you might want to check your units, bro. A temp of 0.3 K is like interstellar space cold... But eh, Cleveland is basically the far wasteland of the universe, so that might be accurate :P

3) I don't have anything planned in particular; I'd like to make use of my upcoming spring break, assuming things aren't doofy cold, and in the summer I may go to Nashville for a friend's wedding. But I'm sure Near Earth Objects will want to make some small tour trips during the year, which will get me out and about.

1) I've only played online on this site, although I've played a decent amount of the party game. I remember first being introduced to it as "Werewolf" from a German exchange student in high school, and one of the first parties I went to in Illinois had a couple of very intense rounds going on.

2) Favorite game may have been my very first, Avant-Garde 2, just for all the crazy references to musicians I know and love. But closely followed by Super Meat Boy, where I used my preternatural ability to get lynched to my advantage as Tofu Boy :P

3) Won Super Meat Boy, did not win Avant-Garde.

4) I think the only BTS I've had to date has been in WWE, with MP, Bass, and SVS. Which was fun for getting to roleplay as THE ROCK!

5) I want BTS with Vomps. Because I have no idea what's going on in that head.

6) I like MP's no-holds-barred style to participation :feb:

7) It's off and on for me; I'll mostly jump in if I see a theme I particularly like or know I won't be crazily busy for the couple weeks the game is running.

Hello, Boomslang! I like asking the weird questions. Hope you don't mind

Favorite snack?

1) My family is really rather small; just my brother, my parents, and I in the immediate range. We do have an aunt with whom we celebrate a lot of holidays and a great cousin (idk what she actually is, but in her 80s) who acts like a grandma surrogate.

2) I'm currently a graduate assistant as part of my school program. It pays the bills (barely) and is not what I'd thought I'd be doing five years ago... I'm ok with the path right now, however. Writing and editing (or even teaching) is a much better fit for me than scientific benchwork.

3) I fancy myself a pretty decent cook. I do a lot of Asian stuff, occasional weird vegetarian dishes like an all-inclusive Thanksgiving casserole, and sporadic muffin baking.

1) I don't often eat them anymore, but... Cheez-its. Little buggers are like crack.

2) Eh, nothing immediately comes to mind... I suppose some people may be put off by seitan, or wheatmeat, due to its somewhat unusual and chewy texture.

3) Anything Ke$ha. Girl got some good beats, what can I say?

4) I'm really not into the whole genealogy thing, but from what I understand, we're primarily English/Scottish/German.

5) Shapeshifting ala Mystique. There's just so much possibility with that power; transform into a bodybuilder for super strength, mirror celebrities for access into exclusive events, pass unnoticed in different cultural circumstances, look good and pick up chicks :P

6) Jeopardy is great, but I may be more taken by Family Feud. The tension between what you want to say and what you think the mass of people would say is delicious.

7) Eh... grin and bear it. Most interactions in public are too fleeting to have much of an effect.

Welcome to the Syndicate, Golden!!!

Now, I consider myself a bit of a mafia old-timer, playing on sites like Lostpedia and The Piano; I took a big long hiatus before finally discovering all my old friends/some new friends at this incredible site. But, while people I know seem to recognize you, I don't think our mafia careers have intersected until this moment. So I have questions!

Where did you first start playing mafia, and how did you come to love it? I assume you love it. What kind of roles do you enjoy? Do you have any mafia performances that you are especially proud of? Any you are embarrassed of? And what are some of your favorite hobbies outside of mafia?

Who's your favorite mafia player (besides yourself)?

There are so many... and for different reasons.

In my first ever game, I had BTSC with blindfaeth and he showed me the ropes. A game with blindfaeth is always a good game (except that he is probably the best at reading me of anyone). He was my first mafia friend, and so in many ways I still feel he is my best mafia friend. There is no-one I'd rather be civvie with. There's no-one I'd sooner hang out with on a mafia site.

Then I made so many friends who I loved playing with and just being friends with, and I risk missing people out (some are not even on this site), but sophie, SVS, Flyin High, Unfurl, Heiots, Doober, reywas, juliet, bea, matahari... I had some great times at RM just having BTSC with and hanging out with these people.

And then there are those who I have huge respect for, and who playing against is always a challenge when you are not on their side, and even when you are on their side. Guys like rabbit, the dutchies, and the sadly syndicate-absent manu. They make mafia games a very tough experience, but also a very fun experience, and I love them for it.

But I won't cop out, I'll answer the question with the person I'd most like to be playing in the same game as no matter whether they are for or against me. There is one person who I think I make the most effective team with, but who is also very good at deceiving me. Any game in which we both survive deep tends to be etched in my memory, and she is a great person to have on tap when you are hosting too. And any game where we are both civvie and we have each others backs - the mafia better watch theirs, because we are coming for you. That person is kate.

What is your favorite TV show?

Still Lost. I'm one of those who liked the ending, and can't work out what answers people think we didn't get.

I have a top five though. Survivor, West Wing, Fringe, Chuck. On any given day my ranking could change. The next answer might even sneak in...

What TV show would you want made into a mafia game?

Already done West Wing. That was fun. Next up on my list, Battlestar Galactica. And having been working on designing this game, I am so excited by how great a subject matter it is for a mafia game. I feel like it could really be great.

Honestly though, if I need inspiration for a mafia game, TV shows are what I turn to first.

Why are you named Golden?

I played World of Warcraft back when it first started, and my first characters name was Goldenaxe. I wasn't really active on the internet back then, but when I ended up signing up for forums and stuff, I shortened it to Golden. I guess the name golden is just a part of me now.

Do you prefer pi or pie?

Pi. Pies over here are usually savoury (I don't know that you guys think about pies the same way we do - we have mince pie, steak pie...) I'm not a big fan of most of the savoury pies. But I do make a mean curried chicken and apricot one which is my favourite thing to eat ever (its better than pi).

Do you enjoy dirty things (per Spacedaisy's suggestion)?

I don't like getting my hands dirty. At least not in a literal sense. Even as a kid I was never playing in the dirt.

But hey, if I roll mafia, I'll be getting my hands dirty :nicenod:

What is your favorite smiley here at the Syndicate?

I always liked this one :omg:

But I miss my :golden: one from RM :)

What is your favorite pastime unrelated to mafia?

Right now, it's watching the cricket world cup. But I don't have a huge amount of focus - I would get bored with only one favourite pastime.

Where are you from?

Wellington, New Zealand - or more accurately Lower Hutt. One of the most beautiful cities to live in on the planet. In my opinion ;)

What is your quest?

I could take this so many ways. My quest in mafia is to get a win for my team... unfortunately often at the expense of myself. I think I do it wrong...

My quest in life is just to enjoy it as much as I can.

What is your favorite colour?

It's green. Sorry to disappoint you if you were hoping it would be gold.

What is the capital of Assyria?

Assyria has not been a sovereign nation since circa 225 AD, but I guess it's capital was probably Nineveh. On a related note, I've never been to Ninevah (although I have preached from inside a shark... onesie. About Jonah going to Nineveh.)

What is your favorite beer?

Monteith's Summer Ale. But if I was in the US (which I will be in a month) I'd be drinking Corona... because that's what my family-in-law drink (my wife is half puerto rican).

Do you enjoy dancing?

Not as much as my wife. She makes a fool of herself, and I escape. It's a good partnership.

Have you ever been to a Rush concert?

No, but I have watched Shine, in which Geoffrey Rush plays the piano.

Have you ever made money from selling your own artwork?

I can't imagine anyone would ever want to buy it. In fact, for some reason, none of me or my siblings have an artistic bone in our body. This is sad, given that my great great grandfather is considered one of New Zealand's greatest ever artists, and given he is one of the very few to have been able to paint the pink and white terraces, often considered the eighth wonder of the natural world, before they were destroyed by a volcanic eruption.

On the other hand, I very nearly made money once for playing music. I didn't cash the cheque.

Can I ask you more questions?

Sure, why not. Looks like you are going to anyway.

Which ocean would you most enjoy sailing/boating across?

Any ocean which is shallow enough that I can walk on the bottom without drowning if I fall out...

I travel over water by plane. I try to avoid boat as much as I can.

What's the tallest mountain you've ever seen or been on?

There are a few in New Zealand that are reasonably tall (and I've seen them all) but they aren't really very tall my world standards. One of them is Mount Doom, though, so there's that.

Do you enjoy answering questions?

I survive.

Do you enjoy questioning answers?

Why? Is there some kind of problem with that? Don't you like my questions?

What is the capital of Bulgaria?

Sofia. That one I didn't have to google.

What was the last movie you saw?

The Empire Strikes Back. My wife had never seen it. We watched it on the weekend. PS I did not kill your father.

How many times in one day do you tie up shoelaces?

If I can help it, zero. But usually one of them will come undone at some point. (Yeah, I'm one of those people who takes my shows off with the laces still done up and then wrecks my shoes putting them back on. What of it!)

Is this the end?

I feel like this is only the beginning...

I first played at Spoiler TV (where it was modded to oblivion) and then joined RM shortly after. I signed up at the piano once, but my work had a swear filter at the time, and at the piano 9/10 pages would simply be blocked to me. So it was a waste of time. At RM, swearing wasn't as common but LT also had a setting I could turn on to turn the swears into asterisks, which I think she made just for me. Meant I could play there.

But that is where I came across online mafia. Before that, I played the basic parlour game a lot with the teenagers I taught in Sunday school. Mafia and me just get on well at a fundamental level. To say I love it isn't really putting it right. I just enjoy the challenge of figuring everything out on a fundamental level.

I prefer being a civilian, and I think my civvie performances are what I was known and remembered for at RM. I hunt baddies. Sometimes I hunt them well. Sometimes I'm way off base. I wish I could get into Death Note, because I reckon I have three baddies pegged ;) doesn't mean I'm right. But it's just my natural instinct to hunt them down. My least favourite is to be a mafia when there is only one mafia team, because I find it makes my attempts to hunt baddies less authentic (because, obviously, they aren't authentic). At least if I have another mafia team to hunt, I can keep playing my civvie game!

One thing I'm specifically proud of was a game in which I created BTSC with someone (that I thought/hoped was good) but after a little while I thought they were bad... so, I hatched a plan. I knew the baddies had a lynch switch, and I also knew that I couldn't be lynched the next day. I told her that my ability was that I couldn't be nightkilled after night three, which was the night before... leading her to think the only way they could kill me was by lynch. They switched the lynch to me, and I immediately knew my hunch was right and she was bad and told the thread so. From there we took out the baddie team in consecutive lynches and won. I was very proud of that because I knew that it was them taking my bait that won us the game.

A less proud moment was, there was a game where all the civs had gotten to the point where they knew who the baddies were, but one of them just would not die day after day. In real time, we literally spent about nine days trying to lynch her. And all the time she was claiming to be a civilian. It was early on in my mafia career, and I found that incredibly frustrating, and I spent nine days hounding her that she was mafia, not realising that being that aggressive for that long was going to come across as personal. It was early on in my mafia career, and I'm not sure how I'd react in the same situation again. But I'd like to hope I'd be more relaxed in a situation like that where the game was only going to play out one way, where the mafia were done... I wish I had been less aggressive and the endgame could have played out in fun. After all, what was I expecting her to do, just bow down and admit being bad? I'm not sure I'd had to be mafia at that point, and I didn't really see the other side of the fence.

So, if you don't know me and my playstyle, what you'll find is you will know me and my playstyle very soon. It doesn't take long. I don't expect to be quite as prolific or aggressive as in the past, simply because I have a lot less time to be. But I doubt you'll forget playing with me - for better or worse :D

1. All the time. Usually a weird blend of modern and 70s era words, though... keeps things interesting.
2. In light of that, gotta go with "groovy."
3. Whenever I can mix up "high" and "low" culture in a classroom setting.
4. Boombox, because the ability to project your music on people who may not care is just too good :P
5. Not really? I mean, the number of contexts in which "boomerang" is appropriate is... rather limited.
6. That's a little self-aggrandizing, don't you think?
7. A nondescript beach, large waves, booze. All the necessary elements.

1) Is the work censor still an issue?

Not in the same way. Nowadays I think it is less sensitive, and when it's really bad you might be able to let yourself on to the page anyway. I think if I was going to pages with a lot of cursing all the time, it might be being flagged and my manager might find out. But it's not soooo horrible as it was.

2) WHERE IS THAT GD FRACKING FLAG???

What game was that? King Arthur? Rabbit is a complete... genius. Was that King Arthur?

3) Now that me, you, JC and Timmer are here and Wabbit is back - can we pay him back? :D

Where is Timmer?? He should sign up for Roger Rabbit.

As for rabbit payback- the best payback is to be a civilian and lynch him when he is mafia.

4) Where was your favorite vacation?

My favourite vacation is the one I'm taking in a month. I love going to Anaheim and doing Disneyland, but for the first time I'm taking my wife. There will be ten of us in LA for two weeks (me, anita, my parents, my sister, my brother and sister-in-law and his three kids). Then the rest go home and me and Anita spend another week in LA and a week in San Fran. It's going to be completely off the scale awesome.

5) Where would you most like to travel to that you haven't yet?

New York and Washington.

6) How's stuff and things?

Soooo busy. I have real responsibility and stuff now. At work anyway.

7) What have you been up to since you've been gone?

A whole heap of stuff. Married life is I guess the big thing. It's been a really nice phase of life. But I've just made the most of life and enjoyed whatever I've been doing. I'm still working at the same place, only I'm more senioryish now.

8) What did you want to be when you grew up at age 8? 10? 15?

8: A bagpipe player. 10: Probably a cricket player. 15: That's when I realised law was the only thing for me.

9) What's the best advice you've ever received?

I'll come back to this one...

Never gonna happen..........
