Build Your Own Mafia [SPEED GAME]
Ok, here's the idea: as players sign up, they (and I) put forth and develop roles on the fly, together. By the time the game is ready to go, we'll have a variety of roles that have been slapped together and I'll randomize them and push Play.

Though I think the grudge between you and llama can be a bit much, this is hilarious.

Golden (civilian): Unsilencable. Survives one NK. Dies if he doesn't post at least 10 times in any day or night period.
Unidentified Supreme Court Justice (civilian): If he quotes and agrees with a suspicion in the thread, then the person he quotes will have their vote increase to be worth two. In the case of a lynch tie, if the supreme court judge has voted for one of the candidates that person will be lynched. The Supreme Court judge can also strike down two laws as being unconstitutional during the course of the game.
Senator Burchill (mafia): Host picks 3 laws that can bind the thread the following day. The senator can decide which law will apply. Everyone in the thread must obey the law or else!

Metalmarsh89 (civilian): Each day, you must self-vote but make a case (to be judged by the host for quality) against another player with a minimum of 1,000 words of original content (so excluding quotes). Failure to do either of these things results in death. If you gain the most votes and are lynched, you cannot win with any team. If the player you make a case against is lynched on the same day you made the case, you die in their place, and must make 20 dead posts each ensuing day/night cycle for the remainer of the game in order to win with any team.

Oddly self-deprecating role description, though.

I would have gone with
Self-votes. Has to convince all the players to self-vote as well. In case of a tie (no extra votes used or a tie resulting nevertheless even with extra votes bring used), decides who gets lynched (cannot choose himself). If the first two conditions are fulfilled, wins with any team.

DharmaHelper (Civilian) YEAH FUCKING RIGHT!!! LOL
DharmaHelper (Independent) - A master manipulator, you've got the world on a string. Cannot be lynched or night killed while you have the world on a string. The first time you are targeted for a lynch or night kill, you will cut the string in order to survive. As a result, the world will spin out of control, and the lynch or night kill will be randomly redirected. Additionally, the world will remain in a random state for as many phases as you had the world on a string up until you cut it, with a minimum of one. During this time all lynches, nightkills, and role powers will be randomly redirected. *Secrets*
Secrets: While you have the world on a string, you have the option to stop up to 3 lynches and protect up to 3 people from being night killed. Every use of this ability reduces the duration of the "randomness" caused by cutting the string by 1 phase per use.

Given the personal projections thus far, beginning to think this game could blend in nicely with the "Play like someone else" proposed one, provided of course that the two hosts would agree with such a merge.

Re: Build Your Own Mafia [SPEED GAME]
Peter Pan (Civilian): Pan the Man! Every night you search for your shadow, which you seem to have misplaced. Selects 3-5 players at the beginning of the game to be his "Lost Boys". If a Lost Boy votes for either Peter Pan or Pan's shadow, their vote is worth zero. Each Night, Pan can give any player who is not a Lost Boy a bag of fairy dust, which will grant them powers the next night. Pan can alternatively choose to send his Lost Boys on a mission, which they must accomplish before the next night phase.
Pan's Shadow (Independent): Searches for a Lost Boy every night. If Pan's Shadow finds a Lost Boy, he kills them and takes their role ability for the next night phase. If Pan's Shadow is lynched, he will appear as the last Lost Boy he was able to night kill. If Pan's Shadow is found by Peter Pan, the pair gain BTSC, and Peter Pan begins his search for Captain Hook. (Secrets for real this time) :P

It's intriguing, but it would seem difficult to properly balance when roles are made on the fly I would think.... I'd be willing to give it a shot though. Trying something new inevitably teaches us and I enjoy experimental set ups.

Re: Build Your Own Mafia [SPEED GAME]
I think LC ultimately needs right of veto on unbalanced roles, and to leave some out if need be... that might be how to address it?

Re: Build Your Own Mafia [SPEED GAME]
I did not play it, but iirc Frex ran a game like this at TP (or was it someone else?) I did not play, but when I read it after the fact, i wish i had. The host has to work to balance it; not every role gets to have a kill
But I would definitely be in this time.

Yes, the Absorbing Man! Any night power used against me failed and was absorbed by me to be used when I wish.
It was so awesome! I lost though, despite being invincible. The baddies just kicked our asses and then mocked me personally.

Re: Build Your Own Mafia [SPEED GAME]
I did something like this once a long time ago on another site. The overall format we used for mafia there was different though. Roles were not announced at the beginning of the game, but all roles were revealed upon death. Day periods did not end until everyone voted (and likewise for night periods). Games were generally not very elaborate though. We were all pretty new to mafia, so a couple of us took turns hosting games, and getting more and more interesting with the themes and roles used.
One game, I decided to send out role PM's a little differently. Instead of sending out normal roles, I sent out a PM to every single player telling them to pick a role of their choice, but I also implied to each player that he/she was the only one who was able to do so. A couple people picked alignments to go with it, and the rest I assigned accordingly to balance things out. I realize now this isn't all that wild of an idea, but back in 2009 (I think) with a bunch of mafia newbs, it seemed pretty crazy. Unfortunately, I had to cancel the game a couple days in due to some silly drama cases.
I would really love to try something like an Improv Mafia, but I don't know if that is feasible considering that a host can be prone to bias.

Re: Build Your Own Mafia [SPEED GAME]
I remember Map ran a speed game (like, actually only a few hours maybe of game time) where we got to submit our role and she was very good about balancing it. It was a free BTSC/LMS game as well.
I'm totally not just bringing it up because me and Ace won and beat the crap out of Typhoony

Dexter Morgan (Serial Killer): You are the Bay Harbor Butcher, but only kill bad people. Every time a civilian is lynched, the following night you may kill one of the voters for that player. Following a Mafia team's successful kill you will get a list of three players, one of whom was the killer. You must survive the game and kill each Mafia Don to win.

Re: Build Your Own Mafia [SPEED GAME]
I would go with a trickster/chaos role. Loki if bad, Gwydion if good (he was a Welsh hero & trickster). I did a role like this in American Gods, and it is my favorite role ever. It was secret there so no one saw it coming
It was also an Indy recruiter, but that ight be overpowered in a speed setting.
If targeted, it fails, and the targeter is insanified (but is told only that s/he is insanified, not by whom). It can be tweaked to be bad or good. If civ, for every targeting, he gets another vote to use in the next day cycle. If bad he gets a vote removal for each time he is targeted, but it is cumulative. So he could conceivably remove a whole lynch.
When the game comes around, this will be a secret role & will be different, but this is the kind of role I like

I remember that game! I came up with the role that gets points per mentions of your name in thread and gets different powers based on the points.
