The names of these roles are all old people I knew as a child who have died. The Mafia are people who weren't quite right or smelled weird. The detective is someone I particularly admired- a real scholar.
As for homegirl, he was a man who used to walk down the sidewalk in front of my grandma's house and call out "Homegirl!" to certain people he knew. I never knew his real name, but he was nice to kids, and he used to say, "I'm a street person myself. I like to talk in the street." I included him because, HOMEGIRL!
