Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries is where it's at though. You pick a clan to fight for, and you take up contracts to make money and scrap weapons and armor. Eventually, your choices put you on one side of the civil war or the other.

As far as card games go, its probably the most casual and fun. I used to play MTG, Yugioh, Pokemon and Zatch Bell on a decently competitive level, and transitioning to a game that was generally newer and slower was very interesting and fun.
