This is the first in a series of Stanley Kubrick themed mafias, each with its own unique twist.
This is a timed game. The game will last for six days and six nights. Each player has a secret win condition known only to him or her self, and winners will be evaluated at the end of Night 6.
Due to the nature of individual win conditions, this game could end with no winners, just like real life. There will be no mod kills this game, on account of they might unfairly impact the win conditions of others.
Roles:
Jack Torrence- Can type up his notes each night and post them.
Wendy Torrence - Can role block one player each night
Danny Torrence - Can talk to Tony each night.
Dick Hallorann - Can protect one player at night but if he does so, has a chance of dying.
Stuart Ullman - Each night, can check a player's sanity level and PM that info to one person.
Delbert Grady - Searches for Jack. If he finds him, they become a team.
The Grady Twins (Two Roles) - Have BTSC with each other
Lloyd the Bartender - Serves the drinks each night *secrets*
Stanley Kubrick - The perfectionist director. Can call for a retake once in the game, starting the last day period over again.
Stephen King - The hack writer. He hates this adaptation and tries to sabotage it by killing every night.
The Overlook - Cannot be lynched *secrets*

Welcome, visitors, to the scenic Overlook Hotel! Here you can forget about all your troubles and just relax in peace and quiet, surrounded by gorgeous mountain scenery. Please make yourselves at home and let me know if there's anything I can do for you. I think you'll find your stay a pleasant and engaging one. So I do wonder what the Day 0 poll impacts. Any theories from anyone who is more familiar with the movie than myself?
Sometimes these polls can be logical based on knowledge of the theme; other times, it's pointless to analyze. Part of me is tempted to just click an option and be done with it, but I have some time, so I might as well see what others think first.
Personally, it seems to me like it would be a straightforward infoless poll that somehow impacts the game yet we unaware, but I don't know. I have an aversion to the horror genre in general, even though I can appreciate what a classic movie this is. As a result, I can't watch this movie typically for longer than a few minutes.
Linki~ I have no info on the poll, does anyone, illustrious Llama?
It did indeed! I know others would have likely signed up had it not filled up so quickly. And agreed on the poster, it is incredibly cool. I love how llama appears to be matching his host color with it as well; it seems fitting for the general feel of the movie, if that makes sense.
I don't have any info on it either, hence my conclusions above. Curious to see the host's response.
Linki: That makes sense. What do you think might be the impact game-wise though?
No one has any info on this, or any other poll in this game.

people in the movie get stuck outside a lot and trapped in the creepy frozen maze. I'm inclined to keep my coat. Not to mention I'd like to have it in case a quick exit is needed...

I'm voting llama again because I think I heard him say something that looks like proof.
Given that information, I am going to go ahead and snoop around the grounds. Because I certainly do not want to be entering this house of death any time soon... and I'm sure I will want to be wearing a coat because there is a snowstorm in the movie (and thus DO have a coat, I imagine not having one could be unfavorable).
Perhaps I'm overanalyzing, but that's my train of thought. So grounds it is.
I forgot to mention, there is an easter egg in this game that I will highly surprised if anyone finds, but if you do find it, you will be very happy you did.

Mongoose wrote:So if this is the movie version of The Shining, there will be no topiary animals to investigate, right llama?
That's right. We don't have the technology to create realistic moving topiary animals in 1980.

Will you tell us if someone has found it?

That is the EXACT same order that I read my first two in actually. When I was in sixth and then seventh grade. I don't know what my dad was thinking. I think I went after short story or novella collections after that. I definitely remember reading The Langoliers not long after that and also The Mist and The Body. My favorite King story is actually not a horror but one about a prince in a tower or something similar called The Eyes of the Dragon.
I also obsessively read his pop culture column in EW when he still did that (I don't think he does anymore but no longer subscribe).

Yeah, or how to go about searching for it? I still search hiding places for my Christmas presents so I am very anxious to find this.

Yes.

No. If it happens, it happens and it will be a nice little treat, but I rather doubt it will.

Hello all! Just a quick greeting from your mod on duty and then you will hopefully not have to hear from me again. As Llama already told you, I'm here to keep things running smoothly. If at any point you have a question or concern and need help, please PM me and I will do whatever I can for you. Additionally I ask that if you take legitimate issue with someone else in the game, be it host or player, please keep your complaints in PM to myself and/or Llama. It simply helps to keep the game on track if it is left out of the thread and thereby enjoyable for all. And I promise we will work hard to resolve any issues that might arise. That said, I'm sure you all will be the wonderful people I know you are, and have a great game because this is a really awesome player roster. Enjoy!
Sorry! I checked in briefly enough yesterday to look at my role, but completely forgot to post. Oh well.
I am going to go with keeping my coat on. Given what I remember about the movie, I know a lot of characters spent time in the maze, and I get the feeling llama might force all of us to at some point.
As for the easter egg, I can think of one from the book, but I highly doubt that's what he's referring to here. I get the feeling someone has to say a specific word or phrase in order to get it though. Or a certain, unlikely chain of events has to happen.
Yes, it’s warm in here.

The guests milled about the lobby, gazing up at the high ceilings and ornate decorations of this lavish hotel that seemed to be from another time. Many of the visitors chose to remain outdoors a little longer, drinking in the cool mountain air and the awe-inspiring vistas. Hedgeowl, apparently thinking this was Hawaii or something, shivered a little, being inappropriately dressed for winter in Colorado. Nevinera also appeared to be wearing no coat, but he stood mutely, ignoring his host and everyone else.
Presently, the tour guide gathered everyone together.
“Hi there folks! I’ll be showing you around just a little before I have to leave. There’s supposed to be a storm later and I want to get out of here before the road closes.
“This, as you can see, is our spacious lobby, designed to incorporate elements of Native American decor into a more traditional, luxurious framework. As some of you may have heard, the Overlook has quite history with the Native Americans. Some say it was even built on top of an Indian burial ground, and that the builders had to fight off waves of attacks while they were completing construction. Now-”
Just then, the radio attached to the tour guide’s belt crackled to life.
“Excuse me just a moment,” he said and stepped over into one of the empty offices to have a private conversation. Through the glass of the office windows, the guests could see his face growing increasingly anxious as he speaks. Finally, he reemerged.
“Folks, I’m sorry to report I have a bit of bad news for you. It seems that the police have been tracking an escaped killer, and that they have good reason to believe he came up Sidewinder with you lot.”
“So are the police coming here?” Kate asked, concernedly eyeing the others. The tour guide shook his head.
“No time. That storm’s moving in faster than we expected. In fact, I... um, have to go right now.”
Nervously, the tour guide half-walked, half-ran out of the hotel and a moment later a car can be heard peeling out of the parking lot, the sound of its engine slowly receding into the distance. The guests all stood there for a moment in silence, looking at one another with fear and suspicion. With the host gone, the hotel seemed to have lost all sense of warmth and friendliness, and there is an oppressive atmosphere sinking over the room that makes gives a feeling of paranoid claustrophobia.
“Well,” said Movingpictures07 at last. “If one of us is a killer, I guess we had better find out who.”
Others nodded in approval at this suggestion, a slight gleam of bloodthirstiness visible in their eyes, while a few more merely looked uncomfortable with the direction of the conversation. In any other place, randomly lynching one member of a tour group because of a vague suspicion of an escaped maniac would be seen as rather a rash course of action, but the Overlook is not like any other place.
Outside, it began to snow.
You have 24 hours to lynch someone.

I figured I better post this for anyone who hasn't seen the movie (or seen it 9000 times and doesn't remember every scene) and thinks I just say weird things like that for fun...

The image didn't come through for me - did it work for everyone else?
