Unaided, a door creaked open at the bottom of the stairs.

Everyone, startled, turned to look.

A red ball rolled out the doorway.

In the distance, a child giggled.

The sound of a music box emitted from the doorway; it was immediately recognizable as "Pop Goes the Weasel", yet the music sounded too slow and deranged.

Dante took a step toward the door, but Nadine grabbed his arm.

"Shhh", she whispered, "Don't you see that glow under the door?"

Nadine don't be crazy. He said as he pulled hhis arm away.

Dante reached for the door.

He looked back at his sister, nervously.

Nadine shook her head frantically.

But it was too late.

An arrow shot through the doorway and into the middle of Dante's outstretched hand.

Dante with his quick reflexes caught the arrow as Nadine screamed.

Dante, slamming the door shut, yelled, "Nadine, run!"

Nadine panicked as everyone heard a loud thump bang against the door.

"Don't go back for it!" Yelled Nadine.

Everyone fled into the upstairs bedroom furthest from the stairs.

They all simultaneously wondered why they had gone upstairs rather than out the backdoor.

Dante moved the four-posted bed against the door, while his family stared at him, mouth agape.

"Rip the sheets off the bed and we'll make a ladder to get down to the garden", Nadine ordered as she took charge.

"But they have a thread count of 1000+!," Dante protested.

"man up!" they all yelled in unison.

Nadine and the family furiously start ripping the sheets into strips as Dante sits by dejectedly.

He shook his head, "mom is gonna be so pissed..."

Suddenly, they hear the thump bang against the door and the blue light seeped into the room.

A large crash was heard against the door, then another and another.

A blood curdling scream pierced the air, interrupting the banging which soon resumed.

The ensuing silence was as paralyzingly scary as the thumping din that preceded it.

Suddenly, a light so bright it was blinding came flooding in through the windows.

Despite the blinding light Nadine attached one end of the makeshift ladder to the bedposts and shading her eyes, threw the rest out the window.

Looking out the window as the bright pulsating light, Dante asked, "Are we really sure that going out into THAT would be escaping?"

"What do YOU suggest?", screamed Nadine at Dante.

"Let's go", he said.

Nadine tore open the window and felt a strong gust of air in her face.

The air was hot, and had an unpleasant undertone, of rot or of decay.

Nadine noticed that a platoon of paratroopers was descending from the sky.

As Nadine's father told her when she was a lass, paratroopers descending from the sky this time of year can only mean one thing: the Soviets were coming.

"We're saved!!", screamed Nadine.

Nadine proceeded to tie her bedsheets to her bedpost, fling them out the window, and shimmy down them to ground level.

She got minor sheetburn on her thighs on the way down.

But that was ok, she knew a good doctor (who is definitely a doctor) who would be able to take a look at her inner thighs.

Her tender loins quivered with excitement.

"I forgot I put these here", said Nadine, as she pulled three chicken tenderloins out of her pocket, before taking a bite out of one.

But Nadine was generous, and she cut a portion from one of her tender loins for the platoon of paratroopers to share.

The paratroopers glanced at one another, they could read each other very well, and were all thinking the same thing.
