Peter's brother had finally finished repairing the roof.

"Are you done yet?" asked his sister Nadine.

Peter's brother said nothing, but only crept down the ladder.

"HEY, I'm talking to you, genius," Nadine snidely added next.

"I heard you, Nadine, because I'm not deaf- are you so blind that you can't see I'm through?"

"It's only one eye, you jerk!"

Nadine and Dante's relationship had been strained ever since they were kids as both had always been closer to Peter than each other.

Wait, so Nadine is dating her brother, or did I misconstrue that post?

In the midst of Nadine and Dante's argument, Peter noticed a car that he didn't recognize, pull into the driveway.

Peters eyes narrowed; it was hard to believe, but it appeared to be their Mother.

They had not seen their mother since they were all small children; and Nadine, the youngest, didn't remember her at all.

"He's dead." she said, and Peter knew instantly that it was his father.

"Good Riddance", said Dante, as he threw down his hammer and turned towards the house.

The mother nodded.

Peter and Nadine watched Dante slam the front door shut, and turned to look at their mother.

Dante had been rather vocal in his hatred of both of their parents, while Peter and Nadine had always hoped for their mother to return.

Looking at her, over the chasm of the years, complicated by love and loyalty to their foster mother, Peter and Nadine were both unsure of what to say.

"How?" Peter asked, after a long period of silence.

"The exact case of death has not been determined; but they suspect foul play." Mother replied.

Nadine cupped her cheek, and said, "Why am I not surprised by that?"

"Because 'Joseph' was a low life, cheating, abusive alcoholic?" Dante yelled as he reappeared at the front door.

Dante then received a phone call and walked back inside as he answered.

"Convenient timing." Mother said.

Nadine suddenly had a scary thought.

"What if he had something to do with Dad's death?" She thought to herself.

"Dante and Joseph used to be close until they're fishing trip in Nevada, they won't say exactly what happened, but ever since there had been a rift.

Dante was never the same after he returned from that trip; it was like his innocence was gone.

Peter turned to Mother, "When did it happen, and exactly how did he die?" he asked her.

"Yesterday he was found in a field, with a wound in the back of his head." said Martha inbetween sobs.

"Why, after all these years, did you suddenly feel the need to come see us?" questioned Dante after finishing his phone call and returning outside.

What if this turns out to be an awesome story? I call publishing rights!!

While Dante raged at their mother, Peter thought about Dantes overnight business meeting a few days back; coincidence or had his anger finally gotten the best of him?

The rain delayed no longer.

Nadine, Peter and Dante all turned to run inside; Martha hesitated but when Nadine turned back and looked her in the eye she felt comfortable enough to follow her children.

When they all had escaped into the house from the deluge, however, Dante did not look so comfortable to see Martha standing in the foyer.

"Who invited you to stay?" He snapped.

Nadine reached out and put a hand on his arm, saying softly, "Please, she is our mother, he was our father; let's hear her out".

"Oh, I'm sorry, she is your mother," Dante snapped, "I sure hope Mom never hears those words come out of your mouth!"

While Nadine eyes welled up with tears, and Dantes face grew redder and redder, Peter and his mother looked at each other, asssessing; they were alike that way.

Peter put his hands to his face and fell back into the living room recliner, spent.

Their mother sighed, and turned towards the front door.

"Wait," said Dante, reluctantly.

"He sent me something, the night of his death."

Mother gasped, "No!"

"A letter, with only two words."

Nadine rolled her eyes; Dante was such a drama queen.

Peter took a step closer to Dante, "what did it say?"
