Dear Diary,

I spent the afternoon with Dr. Jacoby at his office. He wanted to see me and go over what I had said to him on my tapes. He wanted to hear more about James Hurley and the fact that I had mentioned going sober because of him. I told him James was someone I had known for a long time, although not so well. I told him I had fallen in love with his purity and the idea that if I was strong enough I could let James take me out of this darkness. I told him that it was a secret relationship only because I had wanted it that way. Donna knows. But the three of us are friends at school so I know she won't tell Bobby.
I told Dr. Jacoby how hard it had been for me lately with everything getting so close, and how I finally felt certain that James was my last chance for light.
I feel like a fake, I told him, even though I was Homecoming Queen. I had such a story behind my smile in the photos and at the football game as well. I still felt the hands and the mouths of the men I had been with hours before the photo was taken. I told him it felt like the school and the town and the world were mocking me by voting me Homecoming Queen. . . . How could they not see how I was being swallowed up by pain? How dare they make me a spectacle like that and ask me to smile again and again and again!
At the game Bobby was the hero he wanted to be, but from the stands I could hardly make him out on the field. Everything seemed far away and muted, as if the blood rushing through my head hushed all the sounds except for my heartbeat and my breathing, which seemed labored, erratic.
I told him I had been having awful nightmares. All of them about the woods, the paths, the tree, footprints, the sounds of an owl. . . . I felt death in these dreams and I also felt lust. Lust like I had known when it was fresh to me and it wasn't tired and worn-out and bettered only by violence.
I did have one dream, the worst, about water. In the dream I was standing at the water's edge and the sky was very very dark but reflected on the surface of the water was the sky filled with white clouds and a deep blue color. I remember thinking in the dream that if I dove in and swam far enough, I might come up in another world that was not filled with so much badness . . . so much hatred. When I did dive in, I remember swimming half the length of the lake . . . I think it was a lake - only to be pulled down by a hand as it grabbed my wrist and took me deeper and deeper and deeper. I told him I thought that hand was ███.
I told Dr. Jacoby that the last time I had seen Leo and Jacques had not been very nice. We had all been fooling around, and they had tied me up in this chair, but I started to get this feeling of claustrophobia . . . restriction. I started to panic and hyperventilate and I tried to explain what was happening but it was difficult to speak and no one realized I was being serious. I started to get very lighthearted and there were flashes of light in my eyes and I was finally able to scream out for them to stop. This was not all right . . . I was not all right. We had been playing one of the games we play a lot where I am trapped in a cabin far far away from any help and that I am a virgin and they are men who have been sent from a strange and erotic place to take my virginity and to punish me for resisting them. And so Leo heard me say this was not all right, but he thought it was part of the game and he said, "Oh, is the little virgin scared?" It went on like that and I started rocking the chair back and forth and I guess Leo was really into it, as was Jacques, and Leo got a little crazy and he hit me, hard . . . too hard. My ears rang. I began to cry. It wasn't until then that Jacques said, "Wait a minute, she's not okay." They untied me and I ran home without saying a word.
Leo's slap had left an ugly bruise on my cheek. I had to tell my parents that this horrible black and blue mark came from when I was carrying a dinner tray from Harold's apartment.
I told Dr. Jacoby I missed Donna and I wished that she and Ronnette would like each other. I wish that we could all be friends so I wouldn't have to hide anything from anyone.
I told him about how I had gone to Harold's last week, really fucked up and how scared I made him by coming on to him pretty heavy. And then, basically because he could not leave his house, forced him to have sex with me.
I told Dr. Jacoby that I cried for hours afterward because I felt so horrible. It took Harold almost an hour to talk to me because I had made him scared, even in his own home, his only refuge.
On the way out of Harold's, Mrs. Tremond's grandson, Pierre, saw me and came up to me and pulled a gold coin out of my ear and walked away.
I told him that ███ was getting very very close and that I was trying as hard as I could to write about him to find out what he was, who he was, before he could get to me. I had been writing so much about him in my diary in poems and dreams and each time I did it I would see him at my window or feel him coming closer, but I wasn't sure if it was paranoia. . . . I just wanted to be normal. I just want to be like everybody else. I don't like having to be careful of who to talk to because someone might hate me if they knew the truth about me, about how dirty I am. And how somehow, I don't remember it, but, somehow everyday I asked to be treated this way. It always happens, so it must be something I don't realize I say, or something I think. I told him how I went to my safety deposit box and how I saw the drug money there and I had a fantasy about taking it and running away forever. But I didn't deserve that. I deserved to stay here. I had done something wrong. My heart hurt so badly, but I knew I had to stay.
I took the responses from my ad in Fleshworld home with me and stayed up all night putting pictures of me and my panties into envelopes . . . and how I had to keep getting higher and higher on coke so I wouldn't break down and cry and I didn't want anyone to hear my cries because they didn't matter to them anyway. They never have.

Dear Diary,

I know who he is. I know exactly who and what BOB is, and I have to tell everyone. I have to tell someone and make them believe.
Someone has torn pages out of my diary, pages that help me realize maybe . . . pages with my poems, pages of writing, private pages.
I'm so afraid of death.
I'm so afraid that no one will believe me until after I have taken the seat that I fear has been saved for me in the darkness. Please don't hate me. I never meant to see the small hills and the fire. I never meant to see him or let him in.
Please, Diary, help me explain to everyone that I did not want what I have become. I did not want to have certain memories and realizations of him. I only did what any of us can do, in any situation. . . .

LAURA PALMER'S ACTIVITIES FOR THE NIGHT OF FEBRUARY 23rd, 1989:

6:54 PM: Went to Bobby Briggs' house. Bobby asked her if she had any real feelings for him, or if she only hung around with him for his drugs. Didn't answer. Left with a large parcel of cocaine.

7:37 PM: Arrived back home. Did a line of cocaine in her room. Was called by James Hurley. Told him to meet her in fifteen minutes.

7:53 PM: Got on the back of James Hurley's motorcycle. They rode out to the woods.

8:23 PM: Began acting strangely. Saw a strange figure hidden behind a tree, who then disappeared. Told James that he didn't really know her.

8:36 PM: Was being driven home by James. At the intersection of Sparkwood & 21, jumped off his bike, and tearfully screamed at James that she loved him. Ran into the woods.

8:50 PM: Met up with Ronette Pulaski, Leo Johnson, and Jacques Renault at a cabin. Engaged in sex and cocaine.

9:37 PM: Bit repeatedly by Jacques Renault's pet bird Waldo.

9:51 PM: Swallowed part of a poker chip.

10:26 PM: Frantically screamed at Leo Johnson to untie her. Instead, he left the cabin and drove away.

10:38 PM: Jacques Renault left the cabin to urinate in the woods. Dale Cooper, inhabited by BOB, arrived at the cabin, and knocked him unconscious with a beer bottle.

10:57 PM: Was grabbed, along with Ronette Pulaski, by Dale Cooper, who screamed and laughed at them.

11:07 PM: Arrived at an abandoned, secluded train car.

11:25 PM: Dale Cooper beat Ronette Pulaski to death, then recited a strange incantation.

11:41 PM: Watched in horror as the being which previously looked like Dale Cooper transformed into a mirror image of herself. Except for one difference: the doppelganger's eyes were milky white.

Laura Palmer - Civilian Leader
You can only win if you die while wearing the ring on Night 7. If you do this, you and all other civilians, living or dead, win the game. You cannot be given the ring before Day 7. If someone attempts to give you the ring before then, it is redirected to Teresa Banks. If someone targets you again, or Teresa Banks is dead, it passes to Chester Desmond, then Leland Palmer, then Sarah Palmer, then Donna Hayward, then Phillip Jeffries, then Dale Cooper. If you fail to die before the end of the game, nobody wins. Your fake-claim is Margaret Lanterman, if you choose to use one.

BOB - Mafia Leader
You can only win if Laura Palmer dies without wearing the ring on Night 7. You can choose another player to possess as a teammate on Day 0. You cannot possess Laura Palmer or MIKE. Your team can carry out a nightkill three times during the game. If Laura Palmer dies before Night 7, then BOB's team must eliminate everyone else from the game before Night 7 in order to win, a task that might be impossible. If the person that you are possessing is killed, then you can find another human host the next phase. The only way you can die is to be given the ring. Your fake-claim is Carl Rodd, manager of the Fat Trout Trailer Park.

MIKE - Independent
You can only win if at some point before or during Night 7, BOB is given the ring and killed. If that occurs, the format of the game changes entirely. There's now an Immunity Challenge every Day phase, and a lynch every Night phase. You will be given certain powers that will allow you to manipulate the game if this scenario occurs. Whoever is left at the end of Night 7 wins. Your fake-claim is Albert Rosenfield, F.B.I. forensics specialist.

POST-MORTEM
or, how the hell did this happen?

The chain of events that led to the mafia winning this game can be traced to three very poor decisions and one very good performance. After Wilgy attempted to give DH the ring, and it went to Teresa Banks (a.k.a. Spacedaisy (a.k.a. BOB's first baddie recruit)), Colin attempted to recruit DH, but was unable to do so. He was aware that the only people he couldn't recruit were Laura and MIKE, and Speedchuck told him that he was MIKE literally on Night 1, so from this point on, the mafia knew DH's identity.

Colin's second recruit was Enrique, who proved to pay great dividends, as DH won an item which allowed him to have a constant open line of BTSC communication with one person. He chose Enrique. This is the first very poor decision. DH decided to fully trust the one motherfucker he most definitely should not have trusted. Enrique played DH like a goddamn fiddle, working with him to establish an alliance with Speed, JJJ, and others to dominate a possible LMS scenario.

Unfortunately for Speedchuck, DH and Enrique's win conditions were completely unaffected by Colin's death, meaning that he was unable to fully turn this game into the LMS free-for-all he was strategizing around.

This is when Speedchuck got two extremely significant items. One was an item which allowed him to read the full set-up for the game. The other was the Ring, gifted to him by Colin. Speedchuck literally had the most important information in the game, which could have allowed him to shake things up entirely, but was unable to share it due to rules about info-dumping during the Day.

However, he wasn't the only one who received an item. JJJ won a decoy Ring, which looked like and was accompanied by the same message as the actual Ring, but in reality did absolutely nothing. The second very poor decision was when JJJ decided to give Speedchuck this decoy ring.

Speedchuck was more or less baffled by this, and it made him unsure about who to give what Ring. Which caused him to pass it along to Enrique, at the exact moment Enrique needed it to partially fulfill the mafia win condition.

The second Speedchuck gave the Ring to Enrique was the second that the civilians could no longer win the game. But, and here's the kicker, it didn't necessarily mean that the mafia automatically won.

It was written into both the civilian and the mafia win conditions that Laura Palmer must die on Night 7 to win the game. However, Laura Palmer was also given the information that if she failed to die during Night 7, no one would win the game. I call this the "Carrie Page" ending.

The idea was that Laura could use this as her last possible defense mechanism, threatening everyone with no one winning the game if they failed to give her the Ring.

Unfortunately for the civilians, DH...just didn't do that. He kept it to himself the entire game.

In fact, he shared barely any info at all with anyone except Enrique. This lead to the other two civilians both not knowing what the hell he was doing, and not wanting to trust him farther than they could throw him.

The final Night 7 BTSC chatroom was comprised of awkward silence. DH wasn't sure if Enrique gave him the Ring or not, (he didn't) and Nutella, who actually had the Ring, didn't share that info with the group. So, DH decided to avoid the "Carrie Page" ending by telling everyone to vote for him.

So ends the game.

PROBLEMS

The main issue I had with this game was that vanilla civilians kinda had fuck all to do. The idea was that the nightly items, many of which gave extensive information, would counteract that. Alas, people kept giving items to the same friggin' people. Out of the 11 items given out, 8 of them went to DH, Enrique, and Colin. Due to the people with info (except for Speedchuck, bless him) not sharing anything with anyone, a wide swath of people were left in the cold.

Ironically, if people approached this like a regular mafia game and tried to scum-hunt, the civilians most likely would have done a ton better. Instead, people just didn't understand the context and parameters of the game, and followed those who looked like they knew what they were talking about, mostly to their detriment.

I think I just had a bit of a fundamental problem with incorporating my avant-garde gameplay styling in a way that people with vanilla roles can be heavily involved. The idea was that this game would be an exploration of how information flows and influences players. Instead people built dams, and all the information was confined to a small area.

SUCCESSES

That said, for those who were lucky enough to know what was going on, they had a pretty rad experience. During Night 6, DH got an item which let him read a heavily-redacted version of the mafia's chatroom over the last phase. So, he learned that Enrique had been lying to him the whole time juuuust after the window for him to do anything about it had closed.

The ensuing showdown between them in the chatroom is probably one of my favorite moments in one of my games, and I'll link to it below.

I thought the different chatrooms and the various items worked like gangbusters, and produced many interesting dynamics. I'm definitely going to include something similar to the randomized list of items in my next game, albeit with a strict limit on how many items a person can get.

The challenges, which I adapted from a South Korean game show called The Genius, worked pretty well, outside of the shaky start to the first challenge, which will end up clogging up my inbox history for years to come. It gave me hope that I can pull off a game consisting entirely of challenges like the ones played here.

Colin: Well I guess firstly I should note that I haven't ever played a game with a map-based mechanic, at all, so I don't really know how they're run or what the usual sort of thing for nightkills is to me. So it's plausible in that, maybe that is a function of the map in other games, but in this one it would just be odd because we see where everybody goes and we have very, very small pools to work from then

Colin: It just doesn't seem like a balanced way for the kills to take place, imo

JJJ: How do you suppose the kills function?

Colin: My guess would be that they're pretty ordinary, but there's no way of knowing right now since I don't think there have been any

The idea was that Laura could use this as her last possible defense mechanism, threatening everyone with no one winning the game if they failed to give her the Ring.

Unfortunately for the civilians, DH...just didn't do that. He kept it to himself the entire game.

In fact, he shared barely any info at all with anyone except Enrique. This lead to the other two civilians both not knowing what the hell he was doing, and not wanting to trust him farther than they could throw him.

The final Night 7 BTSC chatroom was comprised of awkward silence. DH wasn't sure if Enrique gave him the Ring or not, (he didn't) and Nutella, who actually had the Ring, didn't share that info with the group. So, DH decided to avoid the "Carrie Page" ending by telling everyone to vote for him.

POST-MORTEM
or, how the hell did this happen?

It was written into both the civilian and the mafia win conditions that Laura Palmer must die on Night 7 to win the game. However, Laura Palmer was also given the information that if she failed to die during Night 7, no one would win the game. I call this the "Carrie Page" ending.

The idea was that Laura could use this as her last possible defense mechanism, threatening everyone with no one winning the game if they failed to give her the Ring.

Unfortunately for the civilians, DH...just didn't do that. He kept it to himself the entire game.

In fact, he shared barely any info at all with anyone except Enrique. This lead to the other two civilians both not knowing what the hell he was doing, and not wanting to trust him farther than they could throw him.

The final Night 7 BTSC chatroom was comprised of awkward silence. DH wasn't sure if Enrique gave him the Ring or not, (he didn't) and Nutella, who actually had the Ring, didn't share that info with the group. So, DH decided to avoid the "Carrie Page" ending by telling everyone to vote for him.

I dunno if the whole Heist MVP thing is still around, I haven't really heard anything about it in a while, so I assume it isn't, but you're the definite MVP of this game. You were juggling around personas in three different chatrooms at the same time, and you never made a slip-up. You deserve the win, you crafty doppelganger son of a gun.
