I feel pretty good about my movies, pretty nervous about most of my actors (Though one or two I can see picking up awards)

I'll have my actor picks in today. I'm so sorry, I've been abroad and had 100 responsibilities. I'll get to it I promise.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread
Our first update!
Iron Dwarf leads the game with an opening box office total of $3,282,610 (or what the new Avengers movie made in 32 seconds!)
DharmaHelper and JaggedJimmyJay each claim a half of that amount, with their actors earning $1,641,305.
The rest of us, I'm sorry to say, are technically up for elimination.
(Always check the spreadsheet for errors!)

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread
Not much in terms of box office impact, just possible awards players... you've got Isabella Rossellini opening Silent Life apparently, but I won't get proof of that until next week's Monday report... Friday brings The Seagull (you've got Saoirse Ronan), Life of the Party (you've got Melissa McCarthy) and Terminal (Rico has Margot Robbie)...
the first major event will be Deadpool 2 the week after!

I wouldn't object to films that "open in the US" but "including international Box Office" into the score.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread
It would definitely add an interesting element to the game... once the contest is fully finished and discussions starts for a potential season 2, let's see where we are at at that time...
Just looking at the current numbers, there would be a crazy layer of scheming involved... a movie like Operation Red Sea has made only $1.5 million in the USA, but $579 million total worldwide...

But I have to say that it would make British films a lot more viable and it would even the playing field for those of us who have, our entire lives, lived by the global metric not the US metric. Which frankly should be the much more relevant metric anyway...
Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread
I think the game runs on the US metric because it culminates with the Oscars, which are American but yeah let's keep that thought until next season I think it could work

Week 2 updated: Golden takes the box office lead with a whopping $8.9 million total... neither Silent Life or Terminal registered any box office take, so they may or may not have even been released, stay tuned on that.

If you can straight up tell me you wouldn't express the same complaint, had you had an actual actor and someone else a veiled cameo for nothing but a plot in-joke device, then I guess the moral compass is established and we can carry on.

timmer wrote: ↑Wed Apr 18, 2018 1:40 am An important point to mention re: actors. An actor must be listed in the credits of a film to count towards it. This might seem obvious, however there are occasional quickie cameos that actors choose to not make official that will not count.
The example of this that I can point to was from last year because it caused a ripple in my other league. If you watch the end credits of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, one of the floating heads that pops up is none other than Jeff Goldblum, in his Grandmaster get-up, before Thor: Ragnarok actually showed who that character was. So, the Goldblum owner in that league demanded a chunk of the GOTG2 box office since Goldblum "appeared" in the film. However, our bible is imdb, and imdb clearly shows him as "uncredited". Thus... no box office in that case.
So remember that, in case it shows up again in this league. An actor must be in the credits, to count towards box office.

Fully aware of that. For one, it's not that kind of a cameo as the Goldblum example and also not the kind I was bringing up.
For two, for all intents and purposes, Crews is credited (see him on IMDb), so he'll probably fly, but I just felt this movie (tongue-in-cheek-to-the-bone as it is) presented its own exception. The "use" or "appearance" of this actor was a complete joke - an engineered one. A cameo in anything but name masquerading instead as a secondary role. Again, this being Deadpool after all, he might as well have just shouted his Old Spice line and it would have been the exact same thing. If we're on board to roll with this, then enjoy your 40 mil, by all means.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread
I understand the criticism, and I also understand that obviously me wanting to keep the credit/cash is biased, but IMO Terry fits the bill of a points eligible actor. He's credited in the film, he has a speaking role and a name. The length and nature of his appearance in the film is less relevant to the rules (That he be credited in the film as having a role).Ricochet wrote: ↑Sun May 20, 2018 2:10 pm Fully aware of that. I dunno, I get the opposition to it, but I think he counts. I'll litigate for the points if I have to, but I don't think I will have to.

He's playing a part that was designed so that he doesn't play any real part. And presented by pre-movie marketing as a real deal (trailer shots afterwards non-existent etc.), which in my view includes him showing up in the credit list and all. That's all I'm saying and where I stand on.
To put it another way, I regard Slingshot from Suicide Squad to be have been a properly cast actor, regardless of the nature in which his plotline turned to dud, compared to which with Crews I see nothing but a highbrow bait and switch.

Have I, though? Slingshot is a character disposed within the action. Crews is a gimmick. He is used exactly the way I expected it to happen to "Peter"
The "Peter" actor is used more as an actor in this movie that Crews is.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread
I mean, the reason it's completely predictable is the same as when you steal something and the judge says 'why did you steal it' and you say 'because it only cost 5 cents so it's not really stealing anyway' and then you get convicted for 17 years manual labour.
I think your rule would be subjective to apply, but even if it was able to be expressed objectively it wasn't a rule at the time the draft occurred, so it would be wholly unreasonable to change the rules on someone now. And I say this as someone whose box office take is being directly affected.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread
I'm confused who's stealing what or doing the stealing here. If anything, Dharma is likely snatching a third of the actor loot from both of us for a cameo-that's-really-just-a-cameo-except-it-wasn't-marketed-as-a-cameo-because-it-had-to-not-be-marketed-as-such-in-order-for-the-gimmick-to-work. But that's not really on him either, it's just how the movie played out.Golden wrote: ↑Sun May 20, 2018 3:38 pmI mean, the reason it's completely predictable is the same as when you steal something and the judge says 'why did you steal it' and you say 'because it only cost 5 cents so it's not really stealing anyway' and then you get convicted for 17 years manual labour.

And my point on the rule was also that it all has to do with this respective movie having found a way to both adhere to the credited actors rule and screw around it entirely since the crediting thing was nothing but a gimmick. Again, as expected from somethins that's Shenanigans - The Movie.
The crediting of Terry Crews in this movie is a complete artificial smokebomb, that's all my appeal is about.
Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread
The rules are there to be manipulated. Does it make sense to be able to play a first baseman in fantasy baseball as your second baseman because last season he played second base 5 times out of 162 games? No. But that's how the rules are written.
The rules for this league are very clear and public. Dh gets his payola.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread
Also keep in mind that dh had the option to pick any of at least 8 other actors with parts instead of crews so its not like crews represents a real exception. Dh used a spot to grab some deadpool money. Who he picked is a bit irrelevant.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread
Baseball analogies are unfortunately lost on me, as well, since, you know, from Nauru, but I assume one would pick baseball players in order to earn points for how they play baseball, not for being crushed by a cow falling on them from the sky as soon as they step on the field? Because that's this movie's treatment of your baseman Crews.
Yes, Crews is one of three [arguably four] actors (also Lewis Tan and Bill Skarsgard, [arguably Rob Delaney]) getting the same treatment. No change on my point. Yes, DH picked Crews for some easy money (and Crews also figuring in another movie this year). Clear from the get go, but no change on my point.
Opened the IMDb page again and now found (or perhaps just never spotted it in the first place) that even Brad Pitt is credited! Yes, for that scene. So go ahead, timmer, grab some 40 mils yourself, it's now a four-way split. :confetti:
oh wow Matt Damon too? Did anyone pick him?!
Consider myself just having thrown some paper in the air and let's move on. Have a great rest of the tournament, everybody!

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread
I can't even understand how this is a debate. The rules are what the rules are. Terry Crews was clearly credited in the cast before the movie came out, so DH made an informed decision based on that.
Timmer's 'cameo' rule obviously came about to prevent people unexpectedly nicking off with part of a pot that wasn't anticipated. It's about allowing for transparency. DH wouldn't have picked Crews if he wasn't on the imdb page for Deadpool 2, most likely. Why should he be punished for that?

I don't know how much clearer I coould explain that "Terry Crews being clearly credited in the cast" proved to be a stunt for an engineered gimmick. It's not an attack on DH, it's not an attack on his informed decision, it's not a call for any "punishment".
The second baseman got listed to play. Many people probably did bet on him, knowing he'd play. Then he walked on the field and got crushed by a cow. That's the situation.

Very amusing, considering that what I just pointed out about Brad Pitt + timmer's "IMDb is bible" rule now combine to earn him part of the pot.
