Mowgli Trailer didn't "WOW" me. Though I'm sure Cate's going to get me a big ol' slice of pie.

2 days until Solo hits. Should be a big influx of cash. Not expecting it to be a good movie but in fairness it's obviously not trying to be a good movie.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread
So this weekend brings Solo, of course, but also How To Talk To Girls At Parties, and a late addition, Elle Fanning will now also be represented this weekend by Mary Shelley, which I hadn't noticed earlier.

$103 Million over a 4-day weekend. Not the number I was expecting honestly, even given my distaste for it.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread
I do not understand how this is grim - it's probably on track to $700-800m, not at all bad. If it was a Marvel movie or a Pixar movie this would hardly be called grim.
For my part though, I thought Solo was a massive improvement over Rogue One. It actually made me believe in stand alone movies, and I want another one based on the ending. However, I'm still more interested in time periods far removed from the existing saga.

I think its a matter of comparing Solo's performance to its predecessors (Rogue One being the least successful at ~150mil I think, maybe ~130?)Golden wrote: ↑Mon May 28, 2018 10:46 pm I do not understand how this is grim - it's probably on track to $700-800m, not at all bad. Its not "bad" but like, any X-hundred million dollars is still money.
Anyway, box office as a stand alone metric isn't super great, its just that 100 million over a holiday weekend for a Star Wars film is under-performing. IDK.
Like I said, I wasn't gonna watch it regardless but I was definitely thinking 140+.

I mean, you aren’t the one writing the sensationalist headlines! But I have to say if it’s underperforming, in terms of this draft I’m all for that!

DH is just jelly he didn't pick it. I can smell the bitterness from here.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread
Biggest problem is budgetary. They had Solo about 75% done and then decided they hated it and fired the director. Ron Howard was brought in and the film was essentially started over... so when your budget ends up over $300 million and you made $100 In 4 days that's bad.
Compare that to Deadpool 2 with a $110 million budget and it made that back in 3 days.

I thought Solo was close to awful, and I’d consider it a valid candidate for being the worst Star Wars movie.

Like literally fan reactions to Star Wars make zero sense to me. Rogue One is the worst of the four and the Last Jedi the best, both my a mile, in my opinion. Both in terms of artistic merit and Star Wars merit.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread
Some items... imdb had the release date wrong for Isabella Rossellini's Silent Life, so that has been removed from the spreadsheet.
M Plus 7 you picked Paradox as a film. It had a listed release date of May 23rd, but it appears that it actually went to Netflix. I'm not sure of how to handle the rules for this, but as far as I'm concerned, no theatrical release means you don't need to hang onto the film, so it's your call, want to dump it and replace it? Or wait to see if it has a theatrical release in the future?
James Franco's Future World was supposed to open last weekend, but so far I can't find any box office, so stay tuned on that.
The Tale with Laura Dern had a TV premiere, not a theatrical premiere this week, so it has been removed from the spreadsheet, this concerns insertnamehere who owns Laura Dern's contracts.
The only new film for us this weekend is Adrift.

I guess I can wait for now, right? I'll probably dump it in due time if there's no news though.timmer wrote: ↑Thu May 31, 2018 7:52 pm Some items... imdb had the release date wrong for Isabella Rossellini's Silent Life, so that has been removed from the spreadsheet.

I haven't, and admittedly its not in my wheelhouse at all so I'm pretty meh on the whole thing. I'm sure for who its meant for, it'll be a fun experience. Just like I'm sure Comic Book movies, crime/mob movies, etc which I love people aren't hot on. Hell, Hook is my favorite movie probably of all time.insertnamehere wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 9:43 pm Not gonna lie, I'm quite hyped for Suspiria. Have any of you seen the original?

looks really good tbh. movies like that are award magnets (Walk the Line) so I can see it scoring. But I don't think Cooper will win the Oscar. If Phoenix didn't win.......no one will win.

Guys, in terms of the rules... first, it was posted at the very start. Second, it was mentioned after that at least once. I can't be held responsible if some of you missed it. Third, it's a key rule! It's strategy. If someone has a stinker of a film opening early, and is expected to have an awards contender open late, you have to ask yourself... do I grab them early, and suck up the box office of the stinker film, knowing that if their late-opening awards hopeful film gets bumped to 2019, I'm screwed? Or do I let them sit there, available, and wait for the stinker film to open and disappear from contention? That way, I can grab them after the turd opens and now if their awards film gets bumped, I'm not out anything, but... if I wait too long to grab them, someone else may take them, and I lose out...
It's a great risk/reward rule!
And of COURSE we have to be able to grab actors and films late in the year... it's free agency. It would not make any sense, if a film that right now NO ONE has on their radar, suddenly gets big at a festival... for us to say sorry, its sudden best actor hopeful is simply not a part of our league because 2 weeks ago, he was in some indie film...
So hopefully we can move on and continue the league as is. I'll just let Rico's team remain as a ghost.
